  1. From what I read Kaiser doesn't cover revisions. BUT I also know that every Kaiser is different and every situation is different. It sounds like you had an entirely different procedure . I don't know if I would even mention WLS to the doctor but I guess you kind of have to to figure out what really happened.

I'm so sorry you're going thru all this. I am with Kaiser OC & I see a doctor in Santa Ana. Only seen her once and I'm pre-op right now, so I don't have much advice. Let me know if you want her info.

  2. I'm Kaiser San Diego. Apparently the programs are different with each region

I've honestly searched everywhere and even called Kaiser, only to be told I have to follow the WLS appeals process, yet they don't provide the info for the appeals process or where to find it.

Kaiser states you can take the mandatory options courses OR at least 6 months of medically supervised diets/ weight loss programs in a 3 year period (includes weight watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.).

I hate that the waiting period between referral and orientation is so far apart! Haven't we been fat, unhappy, and self conscious long enough?

Could you transfer to Kaiser OC or Inland Empire if you do end up having to take the options classes at least they are only 12 weeks vs. 24. Just a thought. Hang in there I know this is all very frustrating but it will be worth it in the end.

  3. Thanks for the honest response!!

I have Kaiser SoCal and they're supposed to give the options of the 6 month options classes or at least 6 months of medically supervised diets within the last 3 years. I have SEVERAL rounds of medically supervised diets yet they're still saying the courses are mandatory. Why should I have to do the courses when I chose to do the medically supervised diets in an attempt to lose the weight without surgery?

I have Kaiser SoCal too. More specifically Kaiser Orange County. I'd be interested in finding out too lol. I actually wouldn't mind taking the classes but I really would love to get the ball rolling so I could take time off at the same time as my kids during winter break. For Kaiser OC our classes are only 12 weeks. My options classes start in September and probably would end around November/December. I have so many questions myself. Like I don't have any MSWL programs and do I need to get started on one? And can I do all my required tests during the 12 week period? Yea so I'll have to wait for my orientation to ask all this crap.

This is a dumb question but have you tried searching kp.org for this info? Or maybe calling them to find out how to challenge taking the courses?

  4. I watch Grey's Anatomy on Netflix while I 'm at the gym. I never watched it when it was on TV, so I have 12 season to watch and I am only on Season 2. I usually can watch 2 episodes a day. When that doesn't work for me I listen to Pandora. I stay motivated just seeing the numbers on the scale go down. I'm sore my muscles ache ansomf my joints hurt. To me though it is worth all the pain I just push through. Now, to clarify I don't hurt while I work out it's just normal aches and pains after nothing a hot shower, or soak in epsom bath can't help with. Good Luck

I love Greys! I met Sandra Oh (she was walking thru a mall) and I nearly cried! Lol.

Netflix is great. I also love audiobooks. There are tons of free audiobooks on YouTube. You can also watch WLS success videos on YouTube. Lots of different videos to watch.

  5. Wow your weight is almost my goal weight. My goal is 180.

this is one of the big reasons I stopped using the forums on my fitness pal. To many people who were already skinny going on and on about how fat they are and how they need to loose weight when they were already well below my goal weight. I saw so many people posting their "before" pictures that showed slim people with flat tummies talking about how they needed to loose so much weight, it really made me feel bad
What you said is the reason I don't want to tell some people at work about getting WLS. Like when they are 130lbs 5'6" and are trying to talk to me about how fat they are....it's really kind of effed up if I let it get to me. Like are they trying to tell me I disgust them? Lol. I don't let it get to me bc I could care less, but I could see a more sensitive person getting offended.

  6. I am having a harder time with liquids, I am trying Gatorade and crystal light to meet my requirement because it's hard for me to get just Water in.

I did puree the chicken with a little low fat mayo but I think my pouch wasn't having it. I am concentrating so hard on Protein intake that I don't think I am concentrating enough on liquids.

Maybe the mayo too. Think about this as if you're feeding a baby. The first few weeks of baby food is usually one ingredient simple veggies and fruits. I imagine your tummy is fairly sensitive at this point, like a baby's tummy.

I'm sure you know but Gatorade has a lot of sugar (14g/8oz for regular & 7g/8oz for G2). I think some doctors allow it tho bc of the potassium. Maybe instead of the Gatorade try electrolyte Water with your crystal light? Idk just a thought. Sometimes when you're trying to figure something out it helps to get a fresh set of eyes.

  7. Hello guys,

I'm 22 years old my weight was 185 and my height is 5'5. Im 5 days post-op and have only lost 5.5lb and i feel hungry all the time.

The doctor has only removed 65% of my stomach.

So what do you guys think? Is it normal that i'm not losing as i was expecting. Plus has anyone done the surgery with the same weight and height as i am.

I have 52lb to lose to reach my goal.

You're losing weight and that's all that matters!

Also you made the decision to have the surgery for you, no one else's opinion matters but yours. And so what if you think you made a mistake? You can't undo it so just set it aside and move on. Plus I've heard regret is normal at this stage.

Good for you on your weight loss!

  8. The only diet I will have to do is the pre op liver shrinking diet for either 1-2 weeks. And it's usually around 4 months after classes that surgery happens. No orientation, only the 6 classes and no sleep study.

Nice! Do you ever think, by this time next year I can wear shorts from a normal size? LOL that's been my thoughts lately. I have two pairs of shorts and I have underbelly and muffin top in one pair but damn it, I will squeeze my ass into them if that's the last thing I'll do! Haha. I love summer time but I hate having to shop for summer clothes.

  9. Just got the green light from both evaluations next step is starting my 6 week classes!!!

Congrats! I wish all Kaisers had the same process! Haha. My orientation isn't until next week on the 11th. Options classes start in September, but ours in So. Cal. are 12 weeks long. I don't know for sure but I think I might have to do a diet plan thru WW since I don't have any MSWL on record. I emailed the RN and she said they would be happy to answer any questions at the orientation lol, so I got no answers but it's okay cause I can wait a week. I wonder how fast you'll get your surgery date after the classes? Do you have to do a MSWL program? And do you have a required sleep study? JW Lol. I'm rambling, CONGRATS!

  10. Hey all just starting my process with Kaiser and I go August 5th for my medical and mental evaluations and was just wanting to hear of any experiences with Kaiser. How long was your journey? Classes? Pre-op diet?

I hope everything goes well for you tomorrow. Can't wait to hear what they tell you!

  11. For me, it has been a 6 month process at Kaiser Fremont Bariatric. Went to two seminars, got scheduled for an initial consultation with surgeon and nutritionist, then was placed on the reduced calorie diet. I began this process in late February. I received a surgery date in mid July for August 8 (one week from today). Which Kaiser are you going through?

    Are you getting excited?!?!

  12. ....and the purpose of shrinking your liver is primarily two-fold. First, it's beneficial to try and reduce the fat around your belly and liver prior to surgery. Your liver is located very near to your stomach, and a too large and/or fatty liver can cause your surgery to be delayed, or possibly be performed as an open procedure, which has a higher complication rate. Also your liver and spleen are surrounded by little things called triglycerides, and by reducing them prior to surgery, you're also potentially reducing the likelihood of complications and recovery issues. With that being said, I'm not a doctor... nor do I play one on TV. But I did read a whole lot before my WLS, and I ask a ton of questions :)

This quote reminded me of this picture .

  13. Struggling!!!

A whole year has gone by already and I have received more negative than positive from family and so called friends. Now I am concerned and feel ashamed because I have not lost as much as I should have. I did not even Celebrate my first surgerversery (sp). Just healing from two major surgeries at the same time (RNY & gallbladder) was enough but now I realize that the negative reactions sent me more into a depressive state. My starting weight was over 500, maybe there is a willing buddy out there who has been successful with losing a massive amount of weight too.

I haven't had surgery and my starting weight is lower, but I wanted to give you some words of encouragement. You did something wonderful for your life! This is your life to live. People are always going to have something negative to say. Let them talk. Let them say what they want. I'm sure you're doing great and probably better if you had a better support system. Don't give up!

I don't know if you have heard of Joel Osteen but he has a radio station on Sirius and I started listening to him. There is a message he's constantly reiterating that I'd like to share with you: shake off the negativity, shake off the self doubt, this is your time to shine!

Congratulations on your decision to save your life .

  14. Hey all just starting my process with Kaiser and I go August 5th for my medical and mental evaluations and was just wanting to hear of any experiences with Kaiser. How long was your journey? Classes? Pre-op diet?

I'm with Kaiser as well. I saw my PCP on 7/29. She put in my referral for the department of health education. They called me that same day and scheduled me for orientation on 8/11. From what I understand, I fill out paperwork that day and then I can start the options classes. She said the options classes are 12 weeks long (1/week). My doctor did say to make sure I do everything they ask of me to make it easier for the insurance to approve me. I was told from another member her process took about 5 months. I also was told by someone else their process took 9 months and she had to do a medically supervised diet (she chose weight watchers) bc the insurance required her to. I don't know what all will be required of me (Kaiser Orange County, CA) but I will post updates when I know more.

  15. This is probably TMI but my doc has been telling me for years that quitting caffeine would reduce the cysts in my breast tissue that cause me pain around that time of the month so might as well.

    O. M. G. All this time...all this time I haven't known about this! My boobs hurt so much for sometimes up to a week before my period and during and I don't get back to normal sometimes until I'm all done. I never knew it was because of my caffeine intake. I guess I might as well start cutting back.

Good luck kicking the habit. I hope it goes more smoothly now.

  16. I was one of the folks that didn't worry about sharing this information with people.

If I had to do it over again, I would have limited that just to my best friends and family. There were a few coworkers I told and I worked at a big corporate office in Minneapolis. Well, you know how that works, the rumors then spread. Funny thing was, after 25 years there, I actually was layed off 4 months before my surgery but I had been working on it for 5 months before that.

Anyway, I am still friends with over 100 previous co workers and I stop in there when I am in town to see some of my closer friends. I will get little snarky comments from people that I didn't hang with but heard about my having surgery. It's almost like they are waiting for you to fail or something.

For me, I would tell only my family and my very best friends and I would not share my story with coworkers.

When people ask now, I tell them the truth. I lost my weight by changing the way that I eat and getting more exercise. That is not a lie, it is the truth and honestly after the honeymoon period is over it becomes your reality.

You want to maintain? You have to be even more careful about your food and beverage choices and you better be moving your body some.

Just my two cents. I think you are right to be concerned and in the beginning less is more.

I'm typically very open about everything with mostly everyone. I don't have anything to hide really. I'm just over sensitive about this because one time one of the girls that used to work here took time off to get a boob job. She was in her mid 40s and went from a size A to a D. She never told anyone why she was taking a vacation she just did. And then she came back with breasts. It was the freaking talk of the century. Like who cares? It's her body, but you know people can be so petty.

I am such a horrible liar! But at least I have time to think about it...
