I'm vegetarian and dairy free, and I'm looking to get sleeved this summer. I have a friend who's been vegetarian for her whole life and was sleeved 4 years ago, she's healthy as a horse and has kept off 130lbs. It's definitely possible, so do your research and good luck!

Also, I sympathise about the whole "easy way out" perception. I'm 100 pounds overweight, but my friends say I'm "not that big" and I have to defend my decision with the myriad of health benefits it offers. Don't let other people's perceptions keep you from doing what you think is best, but data can help quiet them down.

I'm Vegan, not religiously, but I prefer vegan and I'm 2 week post up, haven't eaten any meat, and I'm alive and well. There is enough Protein in nuts and Beans.

hellosweeetie got a reaction from RichardVST in Weight, Bariatric Surgery, and Sleep - an Introduction
    Hi Richard,
First, congrats on the weight loss. I'll answer your question, as I am also a sleep professional. That said, I am not a doctor- your sleep doctor (pulmonologist/cardiologist/etc) may have a unique tip. For some people who have difficulty transitioning off of CPAP, having a fan near the bed with the air pointed directly at their faces has helped. If you find that you still wake throughout the night, I'd recommend talking to your doctor about having another sleep study.
    Best of luck!

]For whatever reason, a doctor should treat a patient if they need it no matter what the circumstances. Their obligations should be to the best welfare of the patient, not their own self interests. The US surgeon who removed my gallbladder had nothing but bad things to say about the fact I went to Mexico for my VSG. Despite the fact I had a completely easy, pain free recovery with no complications and successful weight loss, he was clearly prejudiced against a non-US surgeon. Ironically, he created a hernia during my gallbladder surgery. I've already talked to a different surgeon about repairing that hernia. He doesn't care that he wasn't the one who caused the problem. Another friend had complications from a colonoscopy and a different gastroenterologist readily accepted her as a patient and took care of everything. I realize everyone makes mistakes, but when there are complications, why should someone be forced to go back to the doctor that caused the problem in the first place?
I am a vet tech and we don't turn our patients away just because they were previously cared for by another vet. We give second opinions and treat animals with complications from other vets all the time.

Your surgeon in Mexico should provide you with all the info you need about your postop care. My surgeon in Mexico provided me with a detailed diet plan, General excercise and nutritional info and postop care instructions. He and his nutritionist are always available for questions via phone and email. My PCP takes care of all of the bloodwork recommended by my surgeon. My OB/Gyn also offered to order whatever blood tests I need, too, so that may be another place to look if you don't have a PCP.
Other than bloodwork, I didn't need any other followup care, but if I had had any complications, my PCP would have referred me to the appropriate specialist. If you find yourself in that situation and no bariatric surgeon will see you (which is common because so many are arrogant pricks that don't believe there is excellent health care available outside the US) you would end up going to the ER where they have to treat you.

I stayed 1 night , surgery the next morning, left the day after surgery about 5 pm.
I was tired and the walk thru the airport seemed to take forever but I made it just fine.

I stayed one night before the surgery in the hotel, night of the surgery in the surgical center, next night back in the hotel. I then went back across the border to San Diego, but stayed a night in a hotel there across from the airport, just because of the timing of my flight. I definitely could have flown home that day and not stayed in a hotel if there had been a later flight available.

I had my surgery with Bariatric Pal and their plans worked wonderfully. As Henry said two night in the surgical center and two more in their recovery house. I did arrive late the night before surgery as was put up at the recovery house for that night and then taken for surgery the next day. I traveled to the east coast with one plane change (overnight) on day 5 with no problem. Good luck with your surgery.

    Hi hellosweeetie,
If you are having VSG surgery through BariatricPal, you stay 2 nights at the hospital and another 2 nights at one of our Guest Condos. You would be able to travel back home on the 5th day.
Please contact me if you have any other questions.

I went through almost a day of pre-op tests at the hospital. These tests brought to light several problems or issues that needed further medical evaluation. As a result I then went through a second round of pre-op testing (3 detailed tests) done by specialist in their respective fields. This additional round of testing included a CT Scan, a sleep apnea assessment, and an hour long ultrasound.
