First off, I have to say: eating foods that your stomach is not ready for is a huge no no. Especially things like rice, that can get stuck in your new incisions and cause a life-threatening infection. Honestly, puking and dumping is the least of your worries when it comes to eating things your recently-cut up stomach is not ready for. Mashed potatoes I have seen on many people's pureed diet plans, though I was told not to eat them for a few months as avoiding starches was one of the goals of my post-op diet.
I'll be 11 months post op in ten days, and the answer is YES, it does get easier! The absolute best thing you can do for yourself right now is to follow your meal plan and teach yourself not to give in to cravings, so later down the line when you're at goal or near it, you can slowly reintroduce certain foods that were a no-go in the beginning, like rice and potatoes (which should still be kept to a minimum), and then eventually be able to eat a varied, healthy diet that nourishes you and satisfies you. Now is the time to establish these good habits, as well as the time you must focus on healing. I can honestly say that a good chunk of people I've met who had complications had them because they gave in to their cravings and ate things they shouldn't have, or took nsaids, or ingested caffeine while their stomach was still healing, etc. These rules and guidelines are in place so that you can be the safest and healthiest possible. Follow them!
How are you feeling otherwise? My first few weeks were completely terrible, but it really does get exponentially better. As someone who is far past your stage, I can truly say that dealing with being bored with what you eat is 100% worth it in the long run. In a few months, you'll be eating like a normal healthy person (albeit less and smaller portions) and you'll be feeling great. Hang in there.

Day 3 and I was on puréed Protein. Be very very careful with chicken. I eat it, but it needs moisture, like mayo. If it's not chewed very well, it will get stuck and hurt like hell. Then you'll probably throw it up. If Soup is an option, that might work better.

Once you get past that bloaty gasy feeling and the scale starts going down, down, down I hope it will help! My favorite thing was popsicles. I am a yogurt lover and ended up having lactose issues 1.5 weeks postop. But if you don't have that issue plain greek yogurt with flavored powder or not is filling. I am 4 weeks out and have days were I cant fathom Protein shakes still. Did you learn the trick about adding plain or unflavored Protein to crystal light and Water (or sugar free grape crush)? It just takes like a refreshing drink. I never had food cravings at all --- but my family was good to keep things away. I was more worried about not wanting to get sick. Week 3 loved canned pumpkin, applesauce, and my savior top quality deli turkey and then deli roast beef. Eat slowly and chew it all the way before swallowing. A few days ago I had about an oz of ground beef with a sprinkle of cheese. Also hummus and avocado. I'm approved to try soft white fish tonight with sweet potato mashed. I also found a lot of interesting cauliflower dishes on Pinterest. The thing I did was only introduce one food per day so that i could make sure nothing caused issues. When the weight starts pouring off hopefully you wont look back but you do need protein to be full and healthy.

I totally feel your pain. There must be something about day 4. I'm at day 5 today, and yesterday I was feeling the same way...just so frustrated, hungry, depressed, feeling like I was trapped with this new stomach that was holding me hostage with no end in sight. But today was better. I'm really sick of Protein shakes and liquids too but I tried to find something just to change it up a little and I think it really helped me. I got some PB2 Protein powder and tried mixing that in my chocolate Protein shake. It was amazing. ...tasted like Peanut Butter cup ice cream. I'm still craving real food but that gave me a little boost and I'm focusing on the fact that I will be able to eat some soft foods in a few days. Hang in there girl! It will get better and it will be worth it!

So I'm so hungry I'm sick of Protein shakes I'm starting to regret my choice of getting this surgery I hope this is just a phase and will pass. I'm 4 days post op. I just want food ! I get that I can't have chips and pizza but I'll settle for some Spanish Soup and rice and Beans or even Mashed potatoes. I'm just tired of being hungry and want to feel full and satisfied:(

Fairly quickly. I know I crushed them longer than I needed to because nobody told me I didn't have to. THey said if I cut them in half or as small as a tic tac, or similar then I didn't need to crush them. And that was fairly early on. It just has to be able to get through the openings inside you.

It is common for patients to be unable to meet their Protein and Fluid requirements during the first few weeks after surgery. Their bodies are in a major heal mode. Keep trying each day and you should be able to get there.
You may need to experiment with various Protein shakes in order to find one that you can tolerate. There are a wide variety out there. You don't have to like it, just tolerate it. Can you drink milk. Eight ounces of 1% milk has 8 grams. If you fortify the milk by adding in a quarter cup of dry powdered milk, it bring it up to 14 grams.

Yu probably feel that way because you are not getting in enough fluids. Which yu will need to go back to the hospital if yu become dehydrated.
I was sleeved on the 6/20/16 and it was very difficult to get my Protein in the first couple of days but it gets easier as each day passes. But yu have to SIP...SIP... SIP. All day if yu have to. I had to switch Protein because my sleeve was refusing the milk based shakes... so I started using the protein that taste like fruit juice. You have to try different things until yu find what works for you!! But if yu don't feel any better yu may need to go to the hospital

Are you supposed to be doing any kind of diet prep before surgery? If so, it isn't advisable to eat foods not on that diet. Most doctors want to have you on a liquid diet or very low carb diet before to shrink your liver since it partially sits across your stomach area and they need it as small as possible to make sure they can move it out of the way without injuring it. You do not want to risk a liver bleed (this is very serious) just because of a craving.
Even if the doc didn't put you on a pre op diet, eat reasonably. If you really want pizza, have a slice, not a whole bunch of slices. It's all about moderation.
Stay strong and just remember you can eat whatever you want after about 6 months, you just might not want that same stuff any more since you're going to relearn how to eat healthy foods.

Our surgeon puts patients on a 1-2 week Optifast liquid diet before surgery. On my last appt on June 15, I went to book my surgery date. Receptionist asked how eager I was for surgery and said I could have operation on June 20. I asked "what about the 2 weeks of Optifast dr just prescribed?" She said it wasn't that big a deal, that they'd rather fill the operating room up... I chose June 29th because I wanted my body to be in optimal shape when they operate.
So I don't think you need to stress too much about what you have done while preop, you still have a few days to get that liver downsized. Good luck to you!

Mine didn't even ask me if I was successful with the liver shrinking diet. My team made sure that I had shakes for most of the week before hand. Others that had been through the process had donated the shakes needed and they distributed them. Do you think your team might be able to help?

@@d0minicanmama1 It's not too late, you have 4 days, Trader Jo's has inexpensive high Protein shakes called Pure Protein, they have no sugar and 35 grms of protein, try drinking those for the remaining 4 days and eating lean protein and a little veggi's, do what you can. If the surgeon gets in there and see's your liver is fatty they will cancel the surgery and you will have to start over Good luck!

I'll be honest, I didn't follow the pre op diet at all. I had your same fears. They didn't weigh me before surgery either. After surgery, my surgeon said my liver looked great and the surgery was very easy. Little does he know, I didn't follow it at all. I don't know if I just got lucky or what.
