EzzyP got a reaction from BariatricBetty24 in Protein Powders and Shakes for Lactose Intolerant
Plant fusion is my favorite Protein powder most whole foods or you can order from vitacost.com. I became lactose intolerant a week post op after surgery. my whey powders are 'isolate' whey and that has the least amount of milk - almost none - so I am able to use it. Sooo delicious plain coconut yogurt and plain coconut milks are my favorite alternatives. I can now eat cheese so am going to try dairy yogurt when i can but scared. Then they say you can try milk. In the meantime until you can eat something like deli meat i used Protein gel packs from the 'bariatric source' to get enough protein.

Once you get past that bloaty gasy feeling and the scale starts going down, down, down I hope it will help! My favorite thing was popsicles. I am a yogurt lover and ended up having lactose issues 1.5 weeks postop. But if you don't have that issue plain greek yogurt with flavored powder or not is filling. I am 4 weeks out and have days were I cant fathom Protein shakes still. Did you learn the trick about adding plain or unflavored Protein to crystal light and Water (or sugar free grape crush)? It just takes like a refreshing drink. I never had food cravings at all --- but my family was good to keep things away. I was more worried about not wanting to get sick. Week 3 loved canned pumpkin, applesauce, and my savior top quality deli turkey and then deli roast beef. Eat slowly and chew it all the way before swallowing. A few days ago I had about an oz of ground beef with a sprinkle of cheese. Also hummus and avocado. I'm approved to try soft white fish tonight with sweet potato mashed. I also found a lot of interesting cauliflower dishes on Pinterest. The thing I did was only introduce one food per day so that i could make sure nothing caused issues. When the weight starts pouring off hopefully you wont look back but you do need protein to be full and healthy.

EzzyP reacted to James Marusek in Difficulty meeting goals in the pureed/soft food stage
You don't have to push yourself into the pureed food stage. I had RNY gastric bypass 3 years ago. I was on Full liquids for the first 4 weeks, pureed Foods for the next 4 and only in the 9th week did I transition to solids. So maybe your stomach is not quite ready and might need a little extra healing time.
The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting store fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Your Fluid requirement is more than just Water. It includes the Water in the Protein shakes, milk, the water you take to take your Vitamins, the water component of Soups, drinks like crystal light, tea or Decaf coffee, etc. It is important to meet this daily requirement to keep from becoming dehydrated. Also as your fat cells are eliminated they release chemicals and hormones that are stored inside. These need to be flushed from your system, through your kidneys and expelled in your urine. Your body needs fluids to make this happen.
Not sure why you are feeling anemic. Your body needs two minerals: Calcium and Iron. But if you take these at the same time or near the same time, they will not allow your body to absorb them. So time separation is very important. For me I found that I took all my Iron supplements at night just before bedtime. Whereas I took my calciums spread out throughout the day. That worked best for me. Without adequate iron, you will become anemic. A lack of B12 can also make you weak and tired. If you are taking B12 as a time release capsule instead of sublingual, that might cause the weakness.

So here's the thing. We all have struggled with our weight. That's why we're here.
Some of us have different predispositions that lead to obesity, but we all turned to WLS as a tool to get better.
Everyone here is about to have surgery, or has gotten surgery. We've all failed and succeeded. And we've had to talk ourselves away from eating something we shouldn't. Many of us have spent the afternoon above a toilet because we ate something we shouldn't and threw it up, or heard/experienced a leak or WLS failure.
We ALL have problems with self control, some more than others. Otherwise why would we need surgery to help us eat less?
Before surgery, how many of us looked at the reflection in the mirror and told ourselves terrible terrible things? How many of us felt shame after eating a slice of cake or a serving or two of fries?
For many of us, tough love is the thing that helped get us to WLS and where we are today. In a way, WLS IS tough love, because it's an extremely difficult process that we did TO OURSELVES because we love our life and want to make it better.
The fact is, you chose to eat bacon very soon after WLS, when you could have eaten something else much healthier (which still would have been VERY wrong btw). A piece of chicken or turkey? But bacon is greasy, fatty, and has very little nutritional value. So not only did you choose to eat when you shouldn't have been, you chose to eat something very bad for you.
Sometimes people will respond to you harshly on here. Sometimes they'll post a repetitive post that has nothing to do with what you asked.
The best thing to do is to ignore or respond with grace. What you think of me, or they think of you, or you think of them, none of that actually makes a difference in our lives.
The thing that makes a difference for you is what you put in your body, and as we are all struggling with the same choices we want to see you succeed, and everyone responds to different kinds of statements.
What I am seeing is you getting upset at the harsh statements, and defending yourself. Don't defend yourself, you made a mistake. Accept it, move on, and don't repeat the mistake

At the end of the day, you are the only one in control of your actions and behaviors. I know your post was directed to @vsganne2014.
I am not sure about her but I remember those first days, weeks, months exactly. I will never ever forget them. I know how scared I was, I know that I may have even 2nd guessed my decision because I was weak and exhausted. I was even tempted to go off plan.
So, I began reaching out to people like @vsganne2014 for help. And you know what, I listened because they knew what it was like. They lived it and they knew what mistakes might actually cause a problem, as an example...eating bacon.
You may not like the tough love approach and I understand that. Try to get past that and learn from people who lived it.
Honestly we are trying to help you guys but if you are not willing to listen or we hurt your feelings, too bad. If we get through to a few folks that are going through the start of their journey, then it's worth it.
At the end of the day, we believe in what we have done because as we followed instructions the weight came off, our health got better allowing us to be here for our children and grandchildren.
If you don't want to listen no one can make you. Clearly you don't listen to your doctor or your nut so what exactly are you looking for???
Someone to tell you it is alright to go off plan and do what you want? Well, you got that to from people that don't know or have yet to live this journey or haven't reached goal and may never.
If you think it is hard now, just wait until you can eat whatever you want because trust me, the honeymoon will end quickly and you will be right back where you started. I am RNY 22 months post op. I literally can eat anything I want. I know the moment I eat chips that tomorrow when I get on the scale I will show a gain. Yes....just from some chips. Do that more than a few days in a row and guess what, I am up 3-5lbs and freaking out. This is because I never ever want to be that sick 310 women who has diabetes, severe gerd, high blood pressure and stage 3 chronic kidney disease almost at a point where I needed dialysis all from eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted.
It is time to pull up your big girl pants and do what you set out to do. For you, for your children for whatever reasons you started in the first place.
It doesn't matter to us who you do it for, just get yourself healthy.
If that seems mean to you, then I am sorry but it really is the truth and I think if you think hard about it, you will realize that doing what you are supposed to is the best thing you can do for yourself.
I applaud those willing to provide an honest kick in the pants because sometimes it is necessary.

I've lost 100 pounds. I've been below my goal weight for 14 months. I weigh 135 pounds. I am 70 years old.
I got to this point in the last two years -- by which I mean I have accomplished my WLS goals -- by being compliant with my surgeon's instructions. Period.
You can have your big fat hissy fit if you want to. And you can keep eating bacon if you want to. Or eat any damn thing you want to when "life gets too tough." See how far that gets you.
Nobody has it easy after WLS. Not you. Not me. Not anyone. It's tough.
So get tough. And you'll win, too.

This site is here to help people through this really tough transition. It is frustrating when posters get upset because people give them the straight skinny on the things that can happen.
The reality is we all need to be kicked in the butt when we don't follow the plan or when we simply disregard what our nuts or doctors tell us to do.
Honestly there may a reason why her doctor and nut both have her on a month long liquid diet following this surgery. If anything she should get a second opinion but no one should be telling her to disregard her surgeons instructions without having an MD and her complete medical history.
So much can go wrong when you have part of your stomach removed or rerouted and without understanding her MDs reason for putting her on a liquid diet, no one has any business telling her to do anything else besides to follow up and challenge her doctor or look for a 2nd opinion.
Incidentally if I were her doctor I would have told her the same thing. Maybe there is a history of her not following instructions that caused problems to begin with. WE DONT KNOW!
There are many experienced people on this board that are frustrated with the fact that people come on here and expect To get permission for something they themselves know is bad.
I am NOT scolding @sisi829, my words are pointed directly at those that give her permission to go off plan without understanding the other side of the story.
WE ARE NOT MD's and for the new folks just beginning this journey, many of us have experienced bad stuff that can happen.
What's worse is WLS is already looked upon negatively and every single person who has it and doesn't follow the rules may likely be unsuccessful down the road adding to that negativity.
For me, Losing 1/2 my body weight literally gave me my life back! Got rid of life threatening illnesses and literally saved me! That being said, I am a rule follower and believe that you will be more successful if you do what you are told.
To have WLS seen as a negative because people choose to ignore the important instructions that help them to be successful is absolutely MORONIC!
I am prepared and just in the mood for the backlash my post brings.....bring it on!

I am week 4+ and loving it. I was scared to go out at first (not sure of what maybe being sick). I just take a freezer lunch bag with yogurt, Protein liquid gel, or anything I may need. Oh and a big thing of Water. I got to start soft foods early because i became lactose intolerant. Hope that goes away. Other than making myself get out (cause of tiredness) I am so happy. Losing weight and going down sizes + the thought that this is just the beginning. No more yoyoying weight ---- all down from here!!!! I have never had that feeling before. I had a 2 week preop shake diet too and am down 32 lbs since that started. Anyone else excited with stories? Please share.

Who ever wrote milk is no nutritional value umm hello? Protein among other good Vitamins. The best Protein shake and plain yogurt (add Protein powder). I became lactose intolerant and the extra protein milk products gave was missed when I went to coconut. Any way if you can keep it up the protein will help you fill full. Too bad someone else cant cook for the kids or put the kids on your post op diet. Lean meats and veggies - no need to cook two meals. I had the full gastric bypass and was on soft foods by week 3 Dr approved. Jars of peaches, cream of wheat (yum), yogurt plain, no sugar added applesauce, canned pumpkin. Also I am hypoglycemic, perhaps you had that going on (low blood sugar) or were dehydrated. Put yourself and nutrition first for the post op healing your family will survive on healthy foods too. I am so lucky my family really helped and if they did eat 'bad' they did at restaurants without me! Don't give up!

Get an isolate whey shake 99% lactose free. I got the gold standard but take a look at vitacost.com free shipping and quick. ** Caution on eggs I have heard people get really sick on scrambled eggs. Didnt your Dr have Nurses and Dietitians to give you info? I had two in person classes, 2 mandatory videos and 4 months of appointments. Plus the two week preop diet. I have followed all exactly and have moved on to soft foods per Drs ok. Good luck!
