Thank you for all the advice. I'm pretty well known in the community so I've had people asking how I've done it. My close friends and family I'm willing to blab away but it's those that I don't know well that I'm hesitant to share with. I like the idea of explaining I'm following a high Protein diet, small portions, eating often. I think that's what I'm going to tell them

I told my boss and a couple coworkers but for the most part kept it to myself. I have tried to surround myself with people who are following the requirements to be successful. I have to focus on that. I have yoyo dieted all my life so my coworkers have seen my weight go up and down. So when people bring up the failed bypass stories I just stay focused on the successes and remind myself I will be a success too.

I mostly tell the truth. I figure if they are going to talk about me, might as well have the facts in line Plus, I think it's good that the truth be known. The stigma behind our surgeries is because people don't know the facts (Jack). I tell them the percentage of those that lose and regain without the help... I tell them that I only have a small window of opportunity to lose and then I'll be just like any other person trying to maintain weight loss, only I'll have a tool that will allow me to have a much better chance at success... I blabber on and on Hahaha!
With acquaintances, I just tend to say thank you when they notice my weight loss. And they don't know me well enough to be asking me any other questions as far as I'm concerned!
I'm flabbergasted though at how many people have not said a word to me about my weight loss... like my snarky sister in law... 68 pounds and not one word out of her mouth - and she KNOWS about the surgery

There is a war began being waged against maintaining a healthy weight. Fast food on every corner, pumpkin spice whatever they are, well-meaning co-workers who bring in doughnuts and Cookies for the break room. I'm thinking of the sleeve as my shield and sword to fight my battle. Yes I'm anxious at times. I chose my surgery date today and shared my nervous thoughts with the surgeon. It is a big decision. As others have said, take your time. I started my thought process on this a year ago. Good luck to you in your decision.

I totally agree with catwoman7. You can't really compare your results to others because there are so many factors (starting weight, metabolism, exercise ability, medical conditions etc) This is a journey. Keep the faith! Sent from my LGLS990 using the BariatricPal App

Make it short and sweet, "My diet is high in Protein, small portions and lots of water".

In my personal life, I choose to tell people that I had bypass. Professionally, I tell people that I have been on a medically supervised diet for the past year. Unless it is someone I think might benefit from the surgery and then I tell them, too. But that's my personal choice. I'm a blabbermouth who can't keep secrets about herself. And I don't really care about judgy, uptight sorts who might disapprove.

I say I've been working very hard (which is true) and I've made big, healthy changes to my eating and exercise habits (also true). Your life and body is not the business of anyone else unless you want it to be.

I would just say thank you. It is personal. My husband is the only one that knows I had the surgery. We just moved out of state so I have a couple months to get my eating back to almost normal I hope.

I started with a phone call to my insurance company and asked specifically what the process was. They were extremely helpful and sent me via email a list of the qualifications and process.
That is how I found out I had to use a Bariatric center of excellence for the surgery and they also provided me with a list of those.
    Just give them a call.

First, look up your insurance plan and see what the pre requisites are for bariatric surgery to be covered. A lot of insurances have certain requirements before they approve surgery, such as several months on a weight loss plan under a doctor's care, psychological evaluations and other tests. Then, look for a bariatric surgeon in your area, and they should be able to help you through the process. A lot of bariatric programs have some sort of orientation you can attend to get the basics.
    Good luck!

My weight was 387 the day of my bypass, and 6 months later on February 17th I was 277, so my 6-month loss was 110 pounds. In the next six months from February 17th to August 17th, I lost 70 pounds. I would highly recommend you keep detailed records, updated with your weight and measurements every month on the same day! It's really fun and interesting to look back and see these crazy changes. Living it is a whole different story.
