MsMiniMe got a reaction from KristenLe in NSV - Bye, Bye Plus Size
Yesterday I had to go shopping for pants that didn't fall off!
3 1/2 months ago I was wearing very snug size 22/24. Since , in the past, my weight would fluctuate as a result of yo-to dieting, I had clothes in many sizes. The smallest was size 16.
I went to a plus-sized store to buy a smaller pair of pants. Much to my surprise the 14s were too big. I must admit that, despite the fact that I was delighted that I was in a smaller size, I panicked a little. I hadn't shopped for "regular" sized clothing in a long time. I also harbored a suspicion that a size 14 (or any size) in a plus sized store was actually larger than the same size in a regular store. Not sure why I thought that but I did.
Much to my surprise and delight, I found that I fit into a size 12!!! Wow! I couldn't believe it! When I looked in the mirror I was able to see ( or maybe recognize) that I actually did look considerably different than I did before surgery. Other people had been telling me so, I just didn't really see it.
I've been slowly clearing clothes out of my closet, but still hanging on to some favorite things that are too big. I guess that subconsciously I thought that I might need them again. That little shopping trip has put a new perspective on what I'm hanging on to, so tomorrow I'm going to get rid of those items to make way for my future wardrobe!

It's scary to entrust someone to surgically alter your body in such a visible manner but I would consider traveling to Wisconsin for surgery after seeing your results.

You better not get any negative comments! I have noticed that lifting weights are helping a bit with my bat wings.
    A bit.
I am starting to get nicely formed biceps and the "V" is showing but alas I don't think underneath (wing part) will ever go fully away.
Unless I have surgery... which as of now it is not on my mind.
Maybe someday I will have the boobie implants and a Tummy Tuck but I doubt I'll do my arms as well.
Good luck to ya and don't sweat some wings, for me - I'd much rather have some hangy skin and bat wings than being unhealthy and 273.4 pounds!
I only have 4.6 lbs to go until goal so I'm super happy.

Ultimate goal weight: 149.... so I can say I'm in the 140's

Good luck to you and keep kickin butt!

I have been so ridiculously busy for the last 5 weeks- family vacation, a gas leak in our house AND a flooded basement while we were gone(!!!!!) and finally packing up and taking my oldest child to college last Sunday. Whew! (Not to mention the start of school for the two high schoolers last week as well!)
All of that said, I just realized that TODAY I am exactly 5 months post op RNY. WHAT a journey it has been!!!!
    HW 282
    Surgery day- 272
Current weight 186 (ish) lol I'm teetering the last three days 187-185
That means that I am only ...drum roll please... 3 pounds from being down 100 lbs from my HW and 13 lbs from 100 from surgery day! Omg!!!!! I'm 46 lbs from my goal!!!! That is less than half of what I've lost so far!
Good luck peeps! This has been and continues to be the best decision ever.
Oh, still can't eat any beef products, gets stuck. Never had dumping syndrome as I completely avoid sugars and fried foods.
Ok. The pics- for reference- my wedding day (20 years ago!!), next me at my HW, then with youngest son 5 years ago     . Then the one with my hubby, son and me at 2 months post op. The one with me and hubby 2.5 months post op and finally with me and my cousin taken this weekend- only a selfie of our faces but you can see the difference. I'll grab a full shot in the am and add it

I understand the craving for Water you expressed in a post to Djmohr. I have similar cravings. Pre-surgery I could down a 16oz bottle of Water in no time. Now I have to remind myself not to drink too much at one time, or suffer the consequences! Dehydration can cause serious health issues so i work hard at drinking enough.
I can also relate to the exhaustion. I am 7 weeks out and I'm just now starting to regain some energy. Unfortunately, I am my own worst enemy on the energy front. I just spent hours washing floors and it wiped me out.
While the weight loss may be slow I have definitely noticed significant changes in my body (good changes). You're right, we WLL get there. The words "slow and steady wins the race" have become my mantra!

I am 7 weeks out of RNY surgery. Have been sticking to plan, with the exception of a few days where I did not meet the minimum Protein and/or liquid requirements. Yesterday was such a day. For the first time since surgery I was hosting a family BBQ. I was so wrapped up in preparation that I did not take in any protein and not much liquid (>24 oz) until evening. I ate about ½ a hamburger (only burger nothing else) and, against my better judgement, about 4 bites of apple pie. Still no liquid.
I should have known better. This was the second time I have tried hamburger since surgery and had the same result – vomiting within 30 minutes of eating. Fortunately this could be done discretely and my guests were unaware. I’m sure that the sweetness of the pie was a large contributor to the event.
The protein thing has been tough lately. Can’t eat much and most Protein drinks and bars are just TOO sweet. I always preferred savory to sweet pre-op and that hasn’t changed post-op.
I woke up this morning committed to drink enough and get the protein in, regardless of the sweetness! I was pleasantly surprised to receive a shipment (earlier than expected) of some new choices of Protein Bars and ingredients for some high protein recipes. Oh Happy Day!!!
Approaching this brand new day with a very positive attitude!

This of course is no serious topic, just totally random. I often times wonder what my dog is thinking as she stares at my huge bubbly body naked. Im starting to think she likes it as she's always front and center for the show. Lol.
My dog is my number one companion she loves to be on me, under me, near me...whatever. It proves to be a challenge when she tries to sit on my thighs but my stomach pushes her off. Lol! I wonder if she too will note the changes that my body is about to take on. I wonder if she'll give me a break from toy throwing when I come home from the hospital. And maybe be more cooperative on her leash. Ahhh one can dream.
Sorry yall, I just love my dog....5 days till surgery and the pressures getting to me.

I am 3 years post-op RNY surgery and I am 67 years old. Walking is good exercise. My knees are good, no pain. I walk but avoid running. Two of my younger sisters had knee replacement, in part because they were overweight. In my opinion, running puts significant stress on the joints that can come back and haunt you years later.
In my younger years, I use to climb hills and mountains, go on camping trips off the beaten trail. So generally, my exercise now is hill walking. It is different than normal walking because it exercises two types of muscles, one on the way up and the other on the way down. It is like climbing stairs. My driveway is fairly steep, around a 30 degree incline. So I walk up and down my driveway for exercise. Sometimes with my dog!

@@fatgirlsvelte, you're understandably feeling a loss also felt by many who have to give up running or some other endeavor for all sorts of reasons. It may be that you'll be given clearance to run again down the line. You'll probably be better off if you can not think about it until you're ready to have your ankles reevaluated. However things turn out, you'll be better off for having worked toward it -- strengthening overall and all the rest.
As walking itself may not be thrilling, turn it into an exploration, an adventure of sorts. Don't walk simply for its exercise value (which it really does have, y'know). Use the time to take in and connect with your surroundings. If you're walking through a neighborhood, take in the life of the streets. In a park, the squirrels and birds and children playing. On a rural road, the fragrances, trees, vistas and all else that comes into view. My walks have a title, "Walking and what I found there." Some have journal-worthy moments for me (which means I say to myself, "Why don't you keep a journal?"). When the mundane or the magnificent takes up residence in my consciousness, my heart is happy.

    Holla,
Week five is upon me (19 weeks of classes to go) and our little book recommends this beginner's walking table. Goal is to set the alarm fifteen minutes earlier, simply roll out bed, and stumble out the door for 10 minutes with incremental increases over the next 12 weeks.
We'll see how it goes. I am a late-night exerciser with 11pm being my preferred workout time. However, with full-time work and school, it simply isn't realistic since it takes an hour or two to wind down post-workout.
The defining moment of "My G-d I need to change my body," hit after a 5k marathon—at my HW (386+ pounds), I had irreparably damaged my ankles from keeping middle-of-the-pack pacing in a severely morbidly obese frame; a fractured talus was the end of the line. The doc said no more running; with the very real possibility that I may never run again as subtalar arthritis has onset.
Was just 27 years old at the time.
So, I've decided to gingerly embark on this little walking program that my medical team cleared. Between this, yoga, and the Water sports, am hoping as I lose weight, the decrease in pressure on my ankles, the increase in bone density from proper nutrition, and muscle strengthening...perhaps when I drop below 200lbs., I'll be in a good place to run again without sustaining injury. Goal is September, 2017 for a slow 5k if my left ankle can hang.
In perspective, the running thing has really been the biggest blow in all of this. I am a natural marathoner under all this weight, and the fossilization of my joints and being told "no more" about broke my heart. Walking isn't anywhere near the rush of running--it would be like comparing walking up a flight of stairs to hiking the Highlands of Scotland. Since being ordered to stop running, I've tried it three times. Even without conditioning, I am (idiotically) able to handle 3.5-7 nonstop miles...but recovery takes upwards of ten days, and the inflammation/immobility is horrific.
After the last run in late-April, I decided to obey the Doctor's orders completely because I couldn't walk unassisted for three whole days.
Still roll down my window and shout at my people who are running down the road, though.
Once a runner, always a runner.
But...no harm in learning to walk before I run again, I suppose.
    ❤️

That was helpful, thanks. I emailed my surgeon and he sent me a comforting response. He said all patients lose according to a percentage.
First 6 weeks loss is 20%
First 3 months loss is 30%
First year loss is 40% (if I remember correctly without looking at his email).
Mine seems to be a bit slower but I am exhausted and suffering through a Florida summer so taking things pretty easy (and have also hurt my foot so couch time is good right now).

Plus, now I'm actually tired at bedtime, and I don't need Ambien. WIN/WIN.
I've tried a few sodas, but now fizzy drinks just make me feel bloated and sick. Which is actually a good thing... no temptation in going back to soda at all.

I am post RNY nearly two years and still cannot eat eggs without getting sick. It is the only thing that makes me sick.
Keep pushing the Protein and fluids with no sweeteners and you will continue to lose weight.
Drinking with your meals at all is a huge NO NO for RNY. If you drink you can push food through too quickly possibly causing a blockage and certainly flushing food before you even get the nutrients and causing you to be hungry. This is one of the most important rules and it really is for life.
You have to get a handle on that.
One way to do that is to ensure that you start your day well hydrated. I have learned to drink at least a 20 oz bottle of Water first thing in the morning. Then I wait, drink 1 Protein shake that gives me a 30gr boost of protein. Then I wait at least 30 minutes and drink another 20 to 40 ounces of Water. If I do that I find that I am not thirsty at all when I eat my meals. I wait at least 30 minutes before eating and in the beginning it is important that your protein is moist and my nut has always had me eating lots of veggies and fruit. She taught me that 2 bites of dense protein for every 1 bite of fruit and veggies. In the beginning I measured everything and I still track what I eat in my fitness pal. I have since learned to trust my tummy to tell me when I am full.
If you follow these simple rules, you will lose the weight.
