  1. I have prepared myself that this will probably stop being easy at some point. I have very little gas. At least it isn't causing me too much discomfort. i have just read so many posts where they couldn't get down the smallest amounts of Fluid and were in excruciating pain. That's what I was prepared for, so this seems like a stroll through the park. It may be that you are blessed with an easy recovery. I had a ridiculously easy recovery and it never got terribly difficult physically. The psychological part has been more of a challenge for me. Wishing you a continued easy recovery!

    Weight Loss Rate/Patterns

This is a graph showing average weight loss by month. I haven't gone back to check its validity, but there is a similar poster in my surgeon's office. https://www.mexicobariatriccenter.com/gastric-sleeve-weight-loss-timeline/ Remember that when talking about weight loss, it's important to think about percentages and not pounds and ounces. Weight loss varies from person to person because we start at different weights; 10% of excess weight for you is probably a different number of pounds than it is for someone else. Pounds and ounces are pretty exciting to lose, just not helpful for comparisons.

    I had a meltdown :(

You are not a failure. 8 days is a very short time and you are still healing. You're emotional and your body is recovering, which is normal. You're not at your best. But you will be! You will figure out how to adjust Water and Protein. You will re-learn how to eat right. You will find that, if you stick with your program, you'll see success when you may have never seen weight loss/management success before. Your doctor isn't there to punish you if you can't drink enough water, but to help you stay hydrated so that your body can function; I don't know what your intake goal is, but be assured that you will gradually be able to drink enough and consume enough protein. Hang in there. While you have doubts now, it's definitely worth it.

I wanna know about carbs... Seriously!

Hi Jason. Congrats on your journey thus far! I am starting maintenance after my next doctor visit in Feb, if all goes well. I'm currently on 30g carbs except for one day a week when I can go up to 90. I average 90 G Protein a day. I don't calculate fat grams on my plan, but I make generally healthy decisions. On maintenance I'll be allowed up to 85 g of carbs/day and protein can go down to 60 g/day. I will monitor to see how it works and adjust as necessary. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Does anyone regret surgery

I'm six months post and my big regret is not doing this in 2012 when I first started to consider WLS. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Houston/San Antonio self-pay cost

I went to Dr Wright and paid $8000 out of pocket. He was able to work with me to get the cost down and I had almost no wait time. Nix Hospital downtown. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Hi all! I am 6 months post-op and doing great. I've met all my surgeon's goals, bloodwork is great, energy is great, etc, There is a lot less of me! I am wondering from those of you who are even further post-op, what can I expect now as far as WL? I can see that it becomes more of an effort the further you move from your surgery date; however, calculating proteins and carbs feels easy to me now and my entire relationship with food is healthier than ever before. I'm having a small setback, weightwise-- I was at my first gw but had to take some medication which caused temporary weight gain so now I'm a tiny bit over gw. I'm ready to attack my stretch goal -- would love to hear from some of you what happens in the second half of this year and would appreciate tips for staying on track!

    Friction with my best friend

Perhaps she is insecure that you are taking steps to gain control while she feels helpless. I agree with melanruh that while her weight issues might seem trivial to you, to her they are very real. I also never talked numbers with anyone until after wls and I felt the numbers I could discuss were not too far off from "regular size" people's numbers, but there is value in a dialogue about the struggles each of you faces even if you don't talk stats. Letting go things I love

Your relationship with food is going to change enormously. I'm six months out and at goal weight while working towards my stretch goal. My surgeon green lighted me for whatever I want-- wine, pizza, etc-- about two months ago. I can't eat a whole slice of pizza and because I monitor carbs I generally just eat the toppings. Wine now causes heartburn that seems to originate in the fifth circle of hell it burns so much, so there is no such thing as a nice glass of wine after dinner. I no longer crave sweets. Lots of sleevers fall out of love with food. Me and food, we haven't broken up but we have an amicable friendship, not a torrid affair. I don't know how your relationship will change but like many of the posters, it will change; you may not be able to imagine it now. During your time of healing you will reset your tastes and tolerances; you will be in control of food and not the other way around! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    The color of urine

Clearer is better. I'm about six months post and I usually gauge how hydrated I am by the color. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Am I crazy?

Everyone is different but if you can avoid picking up squirming tots when you go back, you might be ok. I had my surgery on a Tuesday and showed up for the four days of summer pre-service training the following Monday. The students didn't return for another week. I was fine, just had difficulty remembering to get in all my Water. You have to prioritize yourself - sooner is better then later! Best luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Can't imagine being full

You will feel hungry, but not for a while. The huge difference for me post op (I'm six months out) is that now I know when I'm full, and a ridiculously small amount fills me. A child's portion at a restaurant is easily two meals. Maybe three. It was hard to imagine, before surgery, but it's the reality. You're going to be fine! Self pay timeline

I was self pay. My first appt was mid June. My surgery was July 17. I had bloodwork, chest X Ray, psych eval. Very fast and no problems. I met with my surgeon July 6 and he had an opening on the 17th so I took it. Wishing you the best -- it's been a great change for me! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    New normal

At six months I think I'm understanding what my normal is. I was lucky and had an easy surgery, easy recovery, but mentally I didn't actually begin to accept my new self until recently. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Hair Loss?

I lost a significant amount of hair. Biotin won't prevent it but could help once your hair is ready to regrow. My hair texture changed a lot as well. My nut says that hair follicles in the resting stage will shed around 4 months, which is exactly when it happened for me. I lost hair for about six weeks and now have curly hair. Real Food and Wine

Every surgeon is different and you should be compliant with your plan. I'm about six months post op and at gw; my surgeon was very lax with me because of my starting weight and my eating habits at the time of surgery (I had pretty healthy eating habits). After four weeks of healing I could eat what I wanted provided I followed the guidelines for Proteins and carbs as well as calorie required requirements. At six weeks he said I could have an occasional drink of alcohol-- I did try it at about 2 months and it burned like the fires of hell! I can now have ONE cocktail (I can't tolerate wine or beer) once in a great while. No foods are off limits to me but I avoid fruits, pastas, and breads... I can eat a little but certainly not every day. Nothing carbonated. Social gatherings are not hard for me; I'm more social in that I spend time talking to people rather than eating. Eating out is a waste unless I share a meal-- I cannot eat enough to justify the cost. I can eat oatmeal, quinoa, etc but sparingly as they all expand in my stomach. However, I've been compliant with my nut and my surgeon and if they told me to not do some thing, I don't do it. Have faith in the plan your surgeon uses and you'll find that what seem like sacrifices now are nothing but small annoyances in the end. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    SCARED OF GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY!

I did the same thing. Four days post op I was crying to my husband and saying it was the biggest mistake of my life. He told me "you can't undo this and you have to go forward." He was right. I am almost six months out now and I would not undo this for anything. I've met all my loss goals and won health, confidence, and even empathy. Yes, it is scary. It's easy to stick with what is familiar and therefore comfortable. Life changes are stressful even if the stress is good. Don't let yourself be governed from a place of fear!
