Firstly I am delighted that I have found this forum it has really helped reading about the diverse views and experiences. Thank you all for being so honest. Here is my story so far...
    Moment of truth. Decision made.....
I live in UK and have a job I love, but it can be a huge pressure. My work takes me away from home quite often, in the UK to the US and the Far East. Over the years that has taken its toll eating the wrong food, at the wrong times. (And maybe a tipple or two)
For a big guy I am quite fit but over the last years have found more aches and pains, to the point I felt the need to visit my doctor, something I don't normally do. I did this 10 days ago. Long story short he gave it me straight .....lose weight or die young....I'm 43 and heading towards an illness crisis .....and his opinion, diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems and that early grave. I've tried lots of things I've had my ups and downs but now the time has come for something more drastic.
The wake-up call I needed had arrived! I don't want to wait to go through the process and however fantastic our national health services is (and it is fab), it will take and age. I don't want to be diabetic or have a heart attack. So...... By 10 AM the following morning I was sat in a consultants office having the various options explained to me. My choice, the sleeve. Within a further 24 hours I'd booked my date with destiny September 13th (and it's not a Friday for the superstitious amongst us!)
I have gone from being petrified to super excited I see a future me, doing things that I've not enjoyed for number of years... fastening a seatbelt on an aeroplane....going on the trampoline in our garden writhing rolling off! walking into a normal shop and buying clothes from a normal section. Don't get me wrong I don't want to be mega thin, I like being me but I want to be a me that has longer to live and can enjoy my family, my children, my future grandchildren and actually my work too. Mentally I've got this.....!
    My concerns.......
Personality: I don't want to change my personality has anybody out there experienced that over the long term they change?
Food: i've got my head round that it is going to be a nightmare for the first 3/4 months but after this.... Is it truly normal food but obviously in smaller portions and healthier options?
Alcohol: now then..... my biggest enjoyment and my nemesis ....my consultant asked me? do you drink a lot? I said no ....however when I go out I'm always known as the life and soul of the party and the last man standing.... response you can still be a life and soul of the party but expect to be the first one falling. What have people experienced with alcohol? How much on a night out? What type?
Rightly or wrongly , I've created a bucket list of things I wish to eat or drink before the pre-op diet....my son made me laugh yesterday when he said 'Dad make sure you don't die while trying to complete your bucket list'... Point well noted!
If you have got to this point thanks for reading I'll be keeping in contact via the forms. I'm sure as I need the help on the journey.. You, the Warriors that have gone before me will offer the support and help needed!

I had mine last week, it was super easy. I filled out paperwork with general medical questions and we talked for about an hour. In addition to what others have said I think they also want to know that you realize what you are getting into. They don't want you thinking this is easy or a quick fix. They also want to know if you have a supportive family or friends, or at least don't have a spouse or something that is totally against you having surgery.
Don't be nervous, it will be fine.

    SD123,
Yes, I am really seeing results now. Early post op I didn't have too many issues. I woke up with a large drain on my left side, IV and had some pain, mainly at the drain site. Not everyone gets a drain, I had fair bit of oozing so had this drain. I had no nausea, was so glad to have something to drink finally. I was in the hospital for 3 days, and once at home I had all the stuff for the liquid phase. Sipping was bit uncomfortable initially, and I could feel liquid going down my oesophagus.
I had bit of nausea at times, took Zofran wafers, and had oxycodone for pain.
I found the liquid phase the toughest one, as I felt really hungry. I was surprised re this hunger, but I was still quite raw post op, and had fair bit of reflux, even with the prescribed PPI.
I had a couple of nasty experiences, one was waking up at 3 am, choking on and coughing up acid, burning, foul acid.
I elevated my pillow, and this happened again few days later.
I was told to stop drinking Tomato juice, especially in the evenings.
I also told my surgeon, and asked to be put on Nexium 40mg.
    Nexium really helped with reflux.
The second scary experience was I started feeling faint, cold and clammy with racing pulse while I was driving. Lucky it was a short drive. Once I got to my appointment, the nurse on duty recognised that I was dehydrated. She gave me Hydralyte to drink, and I was fine 15 minutes later.
I threw up few times, too dry scrambled egg and after a fatty beef mince.
I had a terrible reaction to chocolate, reflux from hell! Maybe just as well.
Other than the liquid phase, other stages of purees, soft and mushies, then more solid food were much better to cope with.
I had few stalls, and I learnt through this forum that stalls are normal, and that my body will keep adjusting itself at its own pace.
I still have burps and wind post op. Did not have it before op. It will subside or be gone one day, especially once I get off the PPI.
I am just plodding along, my appetite is gone, don't feel hungry till late afternoons and at times I have to force myself to eat.
If there is anything else you would like to know, I'll be happy to share it.
My health problems are good now, my sugar levels are normal, and my liver is perfect now.
My hair is thicker, and my face looks 10 years younger!
So, I am just very happy that I had this surgery

Yep - we have similar stories. Let's stay in touch and good luck researching your surgeon. It is a big step!

Serenity141 reacted to simpsongrad in Newbie here - just submitting to insurance
I have been lurking on the site for the last few months as I have been researching the gastric sleeve procedure. Now that I met with my surgeon and have jumped through all the hoops to submit to insurance, I thought I would officially join the forums. I have Wellmark insurance and know of several people in the company that I work for who have been approved so I am hoping that I will too. It has been interesting going through this journey already. I have completed the three month dietary monitoring with the nutritionist and psych eval. I was really fortunate to have a therapist who was a year out from surgery from the same doctor I am going to so he had some great advice and thoughts to share. He has lost over 150 pounds in the last year and was getting ready for skin removal surgery. I am hoping to find out soon if I will get this opportunity.
I am 42 years old and have lost and gained weight several times, the last time last year when I successfully lost 88 pounds. Unfortunately, I tried to jog two half marathons in two days (I-35 Challenge of Des Moines and KC) and really messed up my left Achilles tendon. I had surgery on it to lengthen it in March and am only now recovering from that whole ordeal. In the process of being unable to workout like I typically do, I regained so much of the weight I lost. For some reason, the weight really likes to find me every time I lose it!!!!
And that is my biggest concern for this surgery. I am afraid even if I go through with this, I will eventually just gain the weight back. I know I have to make lifestyle changes. I feel like I have done that numerous times before but I fall off the wagon and go back to my old ways of eating. My surgeon and his assistant say I am an ideal candidate since I love to work out and am willing to put in the effort but I am still nervous. I am not sure why this will be any different than any other diet I have done before other than this is more controlled. My surgical team say that you have a finite timeframe to lose the weight and make the changes needed to make this be successful.
I am hoping for a October surgery date and I just ordered several Protein drink samples to try as well as some cookbooks focused on a bariatric diet.
I really appreciate all the people on here and their willingness to share their stories, concerns and encouragement. I think having the support, whether online or in person, is crucial to being successful and am already grateful to have found this site.
