I had to do a week of 1 high Protein low carb meal and Protein shakes. This week, it's all liquid Protein. My surgery is Tuesday and my BMI was 35. My doc makes everyone who has a lower BMI do this. Patients with higher BMI's start 4 weeks out.

The liquid pre-op diet serves many purposes. From what my surgeon had explained to me:It helps to shrink your liver (the smaller your liver the easier it is to perform a laparoscopic surgery because if the liver is too large it can get in the way.
It helps to empty your stomach.
It helps you to become accustomed to the full liquid diet you will be on for approximately 2 weeks after surgery (depending on your surgeons requirements).
    Hope this helps :-)

I'm actually pretty good on the liquid/reduced calorie diet. I am very handicapped now due to other illnesses unrelated to my weight so I don't move very much and don't use much energy. The hope is that after the weight loss, I'll be able to move more easily with less pain. I started the liquids on Monday morning so it's almost a week and I can't say I'm starving or craving anything really. I can say it's more of a mind thing. I realize how much mindless eating I did!
January 3rd can't come fast enough! Talk about starting the year off right!

I'm having my surgery done on the 3rd & currently on a liquid diet as well. It's challenging indeed, even though my surgeon allows me to eat 800-1000 calories a day, I'm trying my hardest to stick to just liquids. I definitely made sure I had something to do every day, to keep me extra busy, until the 3rd...it's helping a lot! lmao

Just finished the liquids. Had my surgery Tuesday. The liquids were VERY difficult. A few times I had small bites of food. But I can tell you this. Those cravings and hunger pains are GONE post op. Any time I felt hungry I had broth or Jell-O. As much as I wanted!

I am on the 3rd. Started 2 week LD today. First day has not been bad and still have one more shake to go. Hopefully that will carry me through the night.
When I started in June, I was put on a 1500-1800 cal
diet a day. Over the months I shrunk it down to where I was eating 1000 cal or less a day. Hopefully, this will help over the next weeks.

I just got my date; Tuesday, January 3rd. Heck of a way to start the year. I'm on day 2 of the Keto diet (protein liquids and one low carb, low glycemic meal daily for a week, then all liquids for a week)/ The timing sucks because of all the Christmas food. I' just tell people I have a stomach bug and that's why I'm not eating. I'm sure I'll be ready to cry come in the next few days when I want to eat and cannot, but I am keeping my focus on a healthier future with no diabetes, no sleep apnea, no high cholesterol, no gastritis, less joint pain, etc!!! Prayers and good vibes for all of us!

I've always had an issue with my weight, but since I stopped smoking in 2000 I gained about 10lbs and then I got sick and gained more weight. Since then my medical condition has not improved and with the meds I have to take and the lack of mobility, I have steadily gained and gained to now being in the morbidly obese category and 120lbs over my ideal weight.
Through all this no one has mentioned my weight! My PCP would laugh at me when I would mention that I would like to lose weight. He would point out the meds and say it's really hard with these...
I have been seeing a new endocrinologist and (finally!) she mentioned surgery to me last November and to think about it. My hubby is totally against it and says "we" can lose weight. Ha! he is struggling to lose the 20lbs he needs to.
I have a new Rheumy and he also mentioned it this last visit and agreed that it would be a serious consideration.
I am confused and looking for all advice and information I can to make the right choice for me but I am glad to have two doctors advising me to go for it.

I have degenerative arthritis, was on nsaids for well over 10 years plus narcotics. I had the lap band in 2010. The nsaids contributed to the erosion of that. I had bypass in October and have had to stop nsaids completely. So that defiantly needs to be part of your decision. Can you live without nsaids after surgery. I'm finding that to be very hard to do!

When I met with my surgeon he said the lap and actually says right on the thing to not implant in people like us. Our bodies will try to reject it. Because steroids cause blood sugar issues and the bypass helps the MOST in that regard, have you considered it? It also leaves your remaining, disconnected stomach to continue to produce gastric juices for digestion and if anything were to ever need "rebuilding" in your stomach or esophagus, the tissue is there to pull from without ever affecting your bypass. I have both lupus and RA, btw. Your surgeon will likely require that you come off steroids before the surgery and stay off them until your are healed. Other than that, there seems to be no contraindications I have heard of. Good luck!

With an autoimmune problem I would not put a foreign body into my body. Who knows when the immune system will decide to revolt against it. Be sure your Dr is familiar with autoimmune issues as many of them are not.

I have R.A, and A.S. I have also started on this journey beging in june and surgery is in december. I have asked lots of question and done research as well and the sleeve is for me. I know it will not cure my issues but any weight I can get off my joints is worth it and if my body is happier that is just a bonus. I get infusions and take daily meds and yes there will be 6 weeks of no diflocinac NSAIDS and my infusuins will have to be delayed a few weeks for my body to heal but to get back things that i have lost is soo worth it!! good luck on your journey!!

I have RA and was on prednisone for 7 years and took daily NSAIDS for the last 15 years. I decided to ween off the steroids because I have experienced first hand the effect they had on healing from previous surgeries. It took almost 8 months to ween from10 mg to none because I kept having rebound effects. This is a good article about weening http://www.cssassociation.org/patient-stories-reader/items/reducing-steroids-while-on-a-low-dose-activating-the-adrenal-glands-by-marian-mesker.html
It's important to work with your doctor while weening if you choose to do so. And be sure to share your history with your anesthesiologist. The extra stress of surgery can cause an adrenal crisis and they would need to give you medications to help your body produce cortisol.
I also knew that with a sleeve or bypass I would not be able to take NSAIDS. That was scary to consider seeing I relied on them heavily for relief from pain and inflammation.
I have never felt better, my knee pain is nearly non-existent, I haven't had a flare-up or any swelling since surgery. It's the best choice I could have ever made.
    Good luck in your decision!
