    Hello everyone!

So just to give details, I had surgery 5/29/18 and lost 95lbs originally post surgery. However since, I gained back 35lbs and have been depressed about it. I’ve lost the 35lbs then gained it back (and the cycle repeats). I’ve tried Keto, Vegetarian, Whole30, the works! And it seemed as if my stomach stretched out and I was back to eating almost all the way normal.

This time around though, I figured I would go back to what I learned pre-op and make the lifestyle changes I made 2 years ago to lose the weight.

I restarted about two weeks ago, eating my food slowly, listening to when I was actually hungry, taking my supplements, drinking my Water, eating Protein first, getting active each day and eating 3 meals without Snacks.

Two weeks later, I’m already down 6 pounds and now it seems like I’m eating the portions I was eating 2-3 months post-op! Even the dumping sensations I felt when I eat too much came back (something I TRULY didn’t miss lol)

I realized that I was seriously overeating and not utilizing the tool I’ve been given.

All of this to say, if you are someone like me, going through regain loss and have been a ways out from surgery, don’t overcomplicate it. Go back to basics and use your tool.

It hasn’t stopped working. It hasn’t stretched out. It’s just not being utilized. And you can pick it back up again.

We got this! Don’t give up.

My first Thanksgiving was 6 weeks after being sleeved. It was a very careful affair....just some turkey and ham.
This was my second Thanksgiving. I enjoyed a bit of everything. My Sister absolutely throws down in the kitchen and conjured up recipes from Aunts and Grandmothers who have passed on. Every bite brought back great childhood memories.
A lot of food over the day. Glad to be back home and back to normal life. Hopped on my scale and all was on track.

Yes you did. Now moving forwards, stick to the plan, it is not a reecommendation, it is a recovery plan post major surgery. I know you can do it.

Your diet plan isn't just a diet. It's a prescription. If you can't follow surgeons orders and get some self control, then how do you expect the major surgery you just had to be a success if you crack a week in?

Guidelines change as new studies come out. Some docs are more willing to make changes based on new studies than others.
Plus different doctors make changes based on their experiences with their patients. A good example from my practice is with eggs. You will see people on here commonly eating eggs in the soft stage, maybe even purée. My docs used to allow eggs when patients reaches stage 5 at 6 weeks out, but just changed it to 8 weeks out because they saw some patients have blockages due to eggs.
If you have questions about why your doctor's rules are a certain way, just ask. Good docs are willing to explain why.

My pre-op diet was one Protein Shake for Breakfast, one Protein shake for lunch, and one small low carb meal for dinner, under 400 calories (no dairy or caffeine). I would have broth or sugar free jello/popsicles as Snacks. I lost 14 pounds that week. I found that pre-op diet to be much easier than what some people have to do! Find something that works for you. Good luck!

That seems low, but the most important number that you don't even mention is Protein. What is your Protein target? How are you doing at reaching your protein target?
From everything I understand nutrition and quality is MUCH more critical for weight loss than just keeping calories low.
    What does your NUT say?

i posted a regret post around 3 months out as well. even 6 months out i think i posted one. now - 10 months out. i'm golden. not just my weight/size but also how and what i can eat is all good now.
all i'm saying is, it takes time. so i hope, for your sake, that is the case as well. but you're right. it ISN'T the right decision for everyone. But you are still very early on in your recovery. hoping for the best for you. xo

I absolutely agree that people need to hear the stories of people who have complications. The first place I came on this board after reading some of the FAQ posts was the complications board. I wanted to know what the worst case outcome potentially was, and get a feel for the types of complications people have, and if there are things I could learn about those complications that might reduce my risks. I applaud you for speaking out. If I were having the surgery with NHS, I would know some more things to ask and look for with the team before committing, only because you are sharing your experience.
I have said that people need to keep in mind that these stories are not representative of the vast majority of people who have the surgery, and that negative experiences are in a higher concentration in an online forum, because it's the nature of people to speak up only if they need support or have a problem. This is NOT intended in any way to say that you shouldn't share your experience, or that your complications need to be minimized. It is only to remind people that may be worried about complications that the incidence is much lower than it may appear reading through an internet support board.

you are certainly welcome to express all of this on an open internet forum.
but others, even if they incorrectly assess your situation, are equally entitled to their own opinions and just as welcome as you are to express them.
I am sorry you have had a hard time of it. For me, this surgery has given me back my life and I am thankful.

Really surprised about the food, most of us are on Clear liquids the days before. But if your doctor ordered it, that must be in their protocol. Though, I can't say I would want hospital food to be my last "real" food before surgery.

Doing what we're comfortable with is probably in part how most of us ended up here. What she needs to do is follow her doctors post op instructions, or at least contact them before just moving to solid food so soon post op. Telling someone they'll be fine in time is NOT necessarily true and could be incredibly dangerous.

<<sigh>> Yep, doctors are such dummies....
If you're not listening to your doctor, you certainly won't listen to us (and actually, you should only ever listen to your doctor anyway, end of story).
But next time maybe don't start off a post by essentially saying "hey I don't like these diet rules and I want to eat what I want, and I'll let you know how it goes"..... Generally posts that start off with telling us you are going to happily defy your doctor's orders are not well received. And don't pop back in to tell us how great the cheating went. You're not going to get high-fives here for that. Most people here do everything they can to comply with every post op request their doctor makes.

@@Ruby81 If you're looking to lose the need for insulin, NOT eating potatoes would be a good start. They're such a high-glycemic food.

What do your post-op instructions say you should be eating right now? Your doctor probably anticipated you following those instructions when he/she made the comments about insulin.

Unfortunately we hear so many things from our doctors that do not make sense but they're the doctors. If we knew better then we wouldn't need them. But in regards to those eating food a few days after surgery, I strongly recommend you sit back and think as to why you elected to have surgery. Be strong be determined to make a better life. Weight loss is 80% mental 20% food. We have to be prepared. Don't ruin it by eating foods that got is in this situation. That's how it starts.

Drinking with meals is also a no no. Just because you think something went down fine, doesn't mean you actually didn't cause internal harm. You're still healing! Doctors didn't get together and come up with the post op diet to make people suffer. You NEED to follow the directions your doctor has given you!

    I started at 254 I lost 119 pounds

I can't afford plastics. I have loose skin on my mid section, back, arms, butt, inner thighs and my boobs are deflated. It's all manageable with shape wear and a good bra.
This is where I'm at after 2 years. It was worth all the loose skin in the world.

I agree with Inner Surfer Girl. Focus on getting your fluids and Protein in first. I have the same issue with not getting enough fluids in. The more I drink, the more I lose:) Stalls are definitely normal. I've had a few that lasted two weeks and then boom, lose 3 pounds in a day! It's crazy. My nutritionist also told me to eat 2 meals a day but that doesn't work for me. I find that if I eat 3-4 times a day, I can get my protein in and am not starving, and losing more. Good luck!
