maggie'smom got a reaction from hats123 in Hey August 2016 sleevers, how are you doing in Jan 2017?
I was sleeved August 12. Starting weight 207, surgical weight 166. Current weight 136. Goal weight 125. Very slow loss now, but I'm not in a hurry, I'm working on conquering lifelong bad habits. Some days good, others, not so good.

just wanted to brag a little. I went for my 3 month check up at the bariatric center, it's been 5 months sice surgery and was told that I don't need to lose anymore weight. I've lost 71 lbs and my goal was 85 lbs. Maybe the extra weight is the loose skin,LOL. I was asked if I would be willing to be a part of their new ad campaign. They want me to be a member of "BARIATRIC HEROES". Not bragging, just thankful for the surgery and for the team at UCHealth Bariatric Center who have helped me on this journey. I tried for many years to lose weight only to regain all and more. I really believe with diligence and the sleeve I can do it. Thanks also for all the support through all this.

It started really early with me and it was a combination of things. My family ate a lot of bread and baked goods, which my mom excelled at making and I loved. We didn't eat super healthy, and when my mom tried to make that stuff, I wouldn't eat it. I was a pill at restaurants, so McDonalds became the go-to for meals when they were out with me. I loved junk food. I was always just sort of a pudgy kid, not necessarily "fat" but heavier than my peers (and bigger in size, taller and broader shoulders). So I took a lot of teasing about my size/weight. I develped low self-esteem from the teasing about my body, but my classmates would react with amazement at how much I could eat at a sitting. I have a particular memory of sloppy joe days at school, which I loved but my classmates didn't...so I'd end up with a stack of 3-4 of them at least, and eat them all. I remember this primarily because a teacher came to me saying they didn't think I should be eating so much, and made me feel ashamed. But I had gotten attention for it from my classmates.
As I got older, I took more razzing from my peers the bigger I got...and I still wasn't THAT bad. But when I went out to play basketball in little league and we'd have to play shirts vs. skins in practice, I was almost always skins...and my flab would jiggle while I played, drawing laughs and jokes from teammates. Kids are just really blunt and cruel. I did lose some weight playing basketball, but my self-esteem took so many hits that I eventually quit athletics entirely.
By the time I graduated high school, I was 190 pounds or so...not terrible for a kid who was over 6' tall, but still heavy. However, it was when I went off to college that things really went south. I discovered that I couldn't do what I thought I was going to do (be a programmer) due to my lack of aptitude in math, and I became depressed. I started sleeping all day and staying up all night, which increased my depression. Which increased my eating, as a comfort. My mom would send care packages that invariably contained cinnamon rolls or Cookies, baked goods that she knew I loved. I ate like crap that year, and I went up to like 230-240 pounds. I dropped out and returned home, and started working random jobs...but I kept eating. Each threshold I'd near, 250 or 300, or 350...I would say, "This far, no further." And then I would blast right past them. I'd put on the breaks and reverse periodically when I got serious about a diet for 5-6 months, then I'd stall out, lose my willpower, fall off the wagon and go right back to my old habits again...and onward and upward.
Late last year, I decided it was time to put a stop to it and that the only way I was going to succeed, having dieted throughout the entire course of my life back to junior high, was to have surgery. I just couldn't achieve 200 pounds of fat loss through sheer will, it had become too monolithic. I needed the help. Now that I've done it, I feel such a sensation of hope, that it's not an "I wish I could lose weight" anymore, but an "I WILL lose the weight."

I'm also a month out from WLS, my weight loss is slow. one day I'll be down a lb. , the next up 1/2 lb. Then no change for 2 days and then down a lb. 1/2. i just began pureed food. The liquid phase for 6 weeks about did me in.2 weeks before and 4 weeks after, it was murder, especially because after surgery my taste changed drastically. Sweet foods are horrible to me. I could barely stomach shakes of any kind.Soups were a little better, but I'm so glad that is over. I've lost 52 so far, 40 before surgery and 12 since, still have 30 to go, but steady progress. I was especially worried since I'm soon to be 66. I figured that it wouln't be fast, I've been dieting since the beginning of oct.2015 and it is now sept.2016.My surgeon told me to begin exercising and I'm on my 2nd week of exercise. This is a hugh life style change, but I'm determined to get healthy. I already was able to stop my blood pressure medication. I wish all of you luck on this journey. It is hard , but it will be worth it.

maggie'smom reacted to Alex Brecher in What Is Your Beverage of Choice?
After weight loss surgery, you are best off if you drink, and drink, and drink. Getting enough Fluid can help you recover faster from surgery. After surgery and as you get further out, drinking enough Water can help you feel fuller and lose more weight.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to get in your 64 or more ounces every day. The rule to separate liquids from meal times, and the fact that you can feel overly full especially right after surgery, can make it hard to get enough to drink.
It is also common that your tastes change. You may not like the taste of plain water, or you may find flavored water too sweet.
With all these challenges, how do you make sure to get in enough fluid each day? What is your beverage of choice – do you go for plain water, or use flavored water, or get in some broth along the way?

I haven't been on/in forums for a while, so I'm out of the loop on adding new friends, but please friend me if you'd like to keep in touch and stuff on here. Also, so I don't feel like the loser kid in the corner scuffing my feet (oh, hi, middle school!).

I'm only 3 months out and my surgeon said the same, but if you look here a lot of people lost their excess weight and more! That is what the average person loses but I'm hoping to lose most of my excess by going to the gym and working my sleeve to the max. I lost more than half of what i want to lose now(about 60% of my excess), so I'm quite confident that I'll lose more, and I'm even thinking now that I don't wa\nt to lose that much more cause i think I'll be too skinny. So i guess it depends mostly on us and the way we work our sleeve and not so much on the statistics

maggie'smom got a reaction from ProudGrammy in off topic but.....where, what were you doing september 11, 2001?
My husband and I were watching the news and heard the alert about the first tower being hit. We of course thought it was a terrible accident until we saw the second plane hit the other tower. We looked at each other in speechless shock. No sooner than we saw this when they announced that the pentagon had been hit and flight 93 was missing. We watched in horrified disbelief as we watched all the death and destruction flashed over the news. How can anyone ever forget 9/11 2001?

Thanks guys. @@sleevenv thank you -- that's excellent advice, to use this time to learn new habits. I am determined to make the most of this and NOT to throw away this chance and everything it means (money spent, risk of surgery undertaken, a real chance to improve my health and appearance like no chance I've ever had). I think I was just shocked, really rattled, to feel even the slightest craving to go back to old habits. It came out of (seemingly) nowhere and I had a really scared reaction -- like oh no, if I have this feeling it will control me. And THAT's a big part of what I have to teach myself and remind myself: h*** no, an "old" feeling does not have to control me or to mean defeat. Not to mention the fact that -- at least at this point -- those cravings are about 100x easier to control than in the past.
At almost 4 weeks out I know it's very early days, and every day I feel like I'm learning something new about post-surgery life and sustenance. And man, do I feel grateful for this powerful powerful tool in the battle for control over my own body and health. It's just incredible.

@@hats123 hang in there and don't doubt yourself. If you choose to defeat your tool, you can do it; so it's best to use these first six months to learn new habits. As you get further and further out you will be able to eat a lot more than you think. But if you train yourself, you won't want to. The hunger--for me--hasn't returned, but habits do. Don't graze. Eat structured small meals and Snacks. At 15 months out, I occasionally indulge in treats and I allow myself to eat good carbs, because too much restriction backfires on me. I reached goal (22 BMI) around seven months out and have held steady. I eat like a "normal" thin person and no one questions how and what I eat (I've kept my WLS mostly private). Thin people eat carbs and occasionally share a dessert. I'm choosing to be thin. Good luck on your journey, and don't let your brain defeat your body.

I had no problem with 2 week pre-op diet. Now that I'm 11 days post-op I can hardly stand to think of any more shakes. I have 18 more days of liquid only and my taste has changed. Sweet drinks taste horrible to me, the Soups aren't very good either. Help, I am going back to work in 7 days and need to find something that doesn't turn my stomach.
Is it common for food to taste different following surgery?

welcome to the post sleeve group. I don't really have a hard and fast goal weight, but tentatively shooting for 125. I haven't been that low in over 20 years. Since I am just short of being 66 years old, I'm concerned about all the excess skin I'm going to have to deal with afterwards. I'm not a willing work out person either. I don't expect to lose quickly, but as long as I feel good and lose steadily I'll take it. Praying that I find a workout buddy to inspire me. I'm not much for working out alone. Just thought of someone who might be willing to go with me!
