I suppose at some level, most folks have a bit of judgmental views about wls. At some level.
It's been a learning experience for me. Sure...learned lots about nutrition and such.....but learned heaps more about myself.
I was one of those who was ill informed over wls....even though I have a close family member who has been highly successful with it after their surgery 15 years ago. Highly successful.
It took a unique set of circumstances to stack up in my life for me to seriously consider wls. I't temporarily lost the ability to "just go to the gym and diet and get the weight off" as I'd done in the past. The health issues mounted....and it became abundantly clear that losing a huge amount of weight would be the first step towards addressing the issues.
Here's the bottom line for me.....I've done well in losing and getting temporarily fit before. I can kick into gear with the best of them.....until I couldn't.
I became interested and focused on the wls as an aid.....educated myself on it as best I could......went through a couple surgeons and found the right one.....and took his advice on the optimum surgery for me. Everything has unfolded as he predicted. I'm very grateful.
The coolest thing about all this is that I've already passed the point where I've stopped in the past. I'm more fit now. I'm more lean. I feel better. My health metrics are much better. I'm in a great place.....yet I am not satisfied. I will continue to get to my goal fighting weight and live there. I look at myself and do so much differently than I have in the past attempts when I'd gotten 2/3 this far. Then I was happy and ready to enjoy myself. Now....I'm grateful for the progress, sure.....but it's just a pleasant observation on the way to where I'm really headed.
I couldn't see the intricacies of wls.....couldn't really understand it.......did pass judgement on it.......until I lived it and my eyes were opened by my own experiences. I'd always kept my opinions to myself....glad I did as they were based on ignorance.
I feel that on balance, there is insufficient mental preparation for patients prior to surgery. The nutritional part is fairly straightforward.....but the mental game is one that must be the foundation and build on solid ground. I am tremendously grateful for Dr. Stapleton. She works with the patients in my bariatric center and is a vital resource. Her pre-op training is thought provoking and really helped me prepare.
I'm being educated in wls each and every day and have been humbled by the experience. I now see my back injury some 13 months ago as a gift. It was the final straw that gave that last push I needed. WLS followed 7 months later and I'm significantly lighter now and can see maybe hitting my goal weight prior to my one year surgiversary. Cool thought.......

Can you ladies give some info on how much overall weight you lost? Did the breast go smaller right away or was it once you surpassed a certain amount of weight? I'm c cup now, this might be a side effect of the surgery not to be liking...

I think that it'd be a horrible thing for me to eat.
I say that because I'm in weight loss mode with a long way to go remaining ahead of me.
I looked over at your starting weight of 277 and your current weight of 130 pounds and I say....."Heck yes.....roll with it !!!"
You've kicked arse and if those are what you want to eat.....then all things in moderation. You've lost 147 pounds.
Only you know whether or not you can eat something like this and not trigger bad eating habits.
Congrats on your weight loss results.

Like someone else mention, when I attended the seminar this question came up. The surgeon conducted the seminar. He said you can try carbonated drinks such as beer, soda but you most likely won't like the way the sleeve reacts. He did say it would create a full feeling and gas.
I like this surgeon who I will be using because he didn't speak in terms of do's and dont's in excess.
He gave tons of information, I feel that's the most important tool in adjusting to life after WLS.

Actually the artificial ingredients in diet soda can be problematic if your prediabetic.
Diet soda with caffeine is not hydrating.
I was addicted to Diet Pepsi, 2 2 liters on most days. Still enjoy one now and again.

Three years out and successful. I drink it. Not as much as I used to pre-WLS. I am very mindful about what I eat, how much I move my body and because I am not really a sweets person, it doesn't "trigger" (how I have grown to hate that word) me to eat other foods.

    @Beck90
I didn't have to ask my surgeon or doctor. I just rejected it the same way that I reject the notion that eating pop rocks and drinking pop will explode your stomach. It's just silly talk. Look, there is a logical fallacy called "appeal to authority". Just because a doctor or surgeon tells you something does not make it true unless he or she can back it up with actual evidence. Merely being a professional is not good enough.
Just like they say that drinking diet pop makes you gain weight because you crave more sweets. Not true for me. I drink diet pop every day and only eat sweets on special occasions (birthdays and holidays).

I have lost 91 lbs and you will NOT believe this BUT the only size that has not changed is my bra size! They are definitely a bit less robust but for the life of me I cannot wear either a smaller band (and still breathe) or a smaller cup without "spillage". What I have had to do though is buy newer bras in the same size because the elastic had kind of stretched out in the old bras. BUT from you tube videos (check out Clusie and Kstar) most people do eventually go down in size and it may just be matter of time for me[emoji4]

No one can foresee the future.... One way to lower your chance of complication is to extensively research your surgeon... Once you find out about his complication rate, you can feel confident... I met with one surgeon told me he has a 10% staple leak complication... I met with another said he only has one leak in 3200 procedure due to a staple malfunction... The first guy had no clue why the staple leaked... The surgeon is the key to a smooth procedure...

When I first started thinking about surgery I found out that my insurance has similar requirements. I was at 39.5 BMI... so I gained a little weight. I was always bouncing between 39-42 BMI anyway, but I was deliberate in my eating to make sure I weighed enough for the first weigh in. You probably only have 6-7 pounds to reach the 40 BMI anyway. Have you already seen the surgeon? Maybe you can tip the scales in your favor

Before surgery they will not let you wear your own nightgown. They will provide you with a gown to change in to when they call you back to the pre-op area. After surgery I wore the same gown and used a second gown on backwards as a robe.

I turn these comments into a joke with responses like what would you like me to leave you in my will? Or well I guess my weight struggle will be over quicker than I had planned.... I don't pass judgement on what others do as everyone has to do what's best for them

I get that one about people dying from weight loss surgery, odd how the whole world seems to know someone who died from it.
