    vacation after surgery?

I just got back from Disney yesterday. I left when I was 3 weeks post-op and felt amazing. Ended up contracting an awful stomach virus and was hospitalized. 5 days of violent diarrhea and severe stomach pain--so bad I thought I was having a post-surgical complication which is why I went to the E/R. Pros: lots of gatorade/water available, high Protein foods available, lots of walking-great exercise after surgery, great way to reconnect with your family that you are traveling with after spending time recovering from surgery. Cons: FILTH AND GERMS EVERYWHERE :-) Be as careful as you can be to not catch anything. I would not say I am a chronic hand washer but I wash more than the average person--even that was not enough! Have a great time and stay hydrated!!
  2. I am 2+ weeks out and still gurgling and rumbling. At first I was sort of embarrassed by it and kept apologizing to my husband and then after a few days I was like, OH PULEAZE, I had this surgery so I can be happy and healthy FOR OUR FAMILY....suck it up!! :-)

    Need reassurance/advice

  4. Hi! I am 2 weeks out and today I began my puree diet. After having a few baby spoons of mashed avocado I got the foamies and slimies and vomited multiple times. This also happened to me last week with some egg drop Soup though I was only having the broth. I had the lapband for 4ish years and foamed/slimed/vomited on a regular basis to a point where I had the band undone. Now I am petrified I have done this irreversible surgery and am doomed to eat slider foods for the rest of my life and remain fat bc the alternative is vomiting day in and day out. Sorry for all of this negativity but I am so scared that I have made a huge mistake and well, too late now so how am I going to minimize foamies/slimies/vomiting? Thanks all. Appreciate any insight u can give. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    12 days post op...

@@haleymarie - I had surgery the same date as you and have had a couple of "semisolid" foods (ex tonight had a mashed piece of avocado) over the last week. Each time I thoroughly chewed and made into a mush in my mouth but vomited each and every time. Got what everyone keeps calling the foamies and the slimeys. I am scared shitless that I have made this huge mistake and there is no going back. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I had my surgery on 5-19 and yesterday was the most exhausted I have ever been. I may have overdid it with the walking both yesterday and Thursday but last night fell asleep putting my son to sleep at 730 and just woke up now!! I feel great but had this wave of exhaustion come over me that I couldn't fight. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Hey there...congrats on your surgery! Looking forward to following along and watching your success. When I first had my surgery everything tasted oddly sweet and disgusting. Woke up on Day 5 post op and everything was back to normal. Good luck to you!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. With the exception of one slip up during the two weeks of my 2 week pre-op diet, I adhered strictly. When I showed up to the hospital on surgery day, the nurse shamed me and make me feel very uncomfortable. I told her that I followed and she said she needed to "speak to the surgeon about iit" And she said it in a way that made me feel like she did not believe me. I only lost 5 pounds in two weeks. I had even called the nutritionist on day 10 to tell her how very slowly I was losing. She was not concerned. I was wheeled into the OR feeling like a complete and utter failure. I am now one week post op and petrified to weigh myself. I am the kind of person that takes the number very seriously… I know I should not, but unfortunately it is something that is buried very deep in me. I was thinking of only being weighed at the doctors office monthly because I am feeling that if I weigh myself and see any small gain--Even Water weight -- it will make me feel defeated and sabotage me. How do you deal with weigh-ins at appointments vs. at home? Are there any non-weighers out there? My feeling is that I did this to be healthy and I can be healthy just knowing that I am adhering to the plan and not associating a number on a scale with good health. Any thoughts? Also, as you lose do you start feeling more confident that you are "doing this"? I still feel like a fraud somehow. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Scale sabotage

Thanks. I appreciate your replies. At the risk of sounding like a chickenshit, I feel like a scared little girl about to go on a roller coaster that I am not prepared for...I guess I will know when I am ready for regular weigh-ins. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Scared out of my mind

My surgery was may 9 and my recovery has been pretty easy. Unfortunately, last night I had that "food stuck" feeling. I made the mistake of thinking that a puréed Soup and a broth are similar enough…I am a full week out but I guess the soup was just too thick even though there were no chunks in it. Fully pureed soup. Deathly ill. Go figure. And felt like such a loser. I was thinking that even after having 80% of my stomach cut out i still cant follow rules. How can i succeed when I am still trying to "cheat" and game the system. When I woke up today I was able to recognize that I had been way too hard on myself yesterday… And back on broth and shakes only. But what was amazing to me is that after a full week of recovery and feeling amazing, 10 minutes of being violently ill was enough to make me start doubting myself! I cant let any shortcomings come between me and success. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Insurance - 6 months or 6 visits?

My insurance stated months but my surgeons office assured me that they meant three months worth of visits so I was able to do it more quickly. Worked out well. Was sleeved on Monday. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

May 17 is my surgery- why am I scared?

I understand your concerns entirely. I had the band in around 2005 and was always vomiting and never losing weight. I finally just gave up and had band removed. Years later and just had sleeve on Monday. Feel like a million bucks-truly. Up until I was brought into the OR I convinced myself that I would fail at the sleeve…that everyone else could do it but I somehow could not. Four days post op and I was wrong! I am totally doing this!! You will be in the same boat. You just have to trust yourself! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hospital Bag (what to pack) ?

My surgery is on Monday the 9th. I am packing the same stuff as you but am also packing a book to read pre-surgery to distract me in case I get the jitters, Crystal Light packets to add to my Water and Biotene mouthwash which is specifically for dry mouth. Best of luck to you! Looking forward to following your success. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Would you use the chat room if you knew where it was?

I would. I have been on this board since last month and went into the chat room a few times and was alone each time. I found it odd that the link to the chat room was so well hidden! I am the kind of person who likes instant gratification so if I have a question, I want an answer -- NOW! :-)

    Scared out of my mind

@@haleymarie - You have inspired me! :-) I am going to try to eliminate all of the "goodies" I am allowed to have like skim milk and fat free sugar free yogurt. (NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD CONSIDER THESE THINGS GOODIES!!) We are almost there!

    Annoyed

Best of luck to you. I feel your frustration--it is a lot of hoops to jump through but just have to wait some more! With persistence you will get where you want to be! Please keep us updated on your date!
  21. I am new at this too...my surgery is scheduled for this Monday; however, I've been reading about this surgery for years so a few questions for you: Have you changed anything recently that has led to this slow down? Same amount of Protein? Meeting protein requirements and eating protein first? Same amount of Water? Have you added or eliminated Snacks? We are all so different but maybe we can help you pinpoint if this was caused by a change. I am sure someone more experienced will let you know if this is common. I have read that a lot of others do a "reset" when things slow down or stall. I think the reset is just Protein Shakes and water but you should DEFINITELY not take my word for it. Best of luck to you in your continued success! Even if it is slower than you would like, the scale is still definitely moving in the right direction and that is what counts the most. Be proud of your enormous accomplishment and go easy on yourself! :-)

    Scared out of my mind

@@haleymarie - Do you mind if I ask what your weight and height is or BMI. I am at 38-ish and had been strictly dieting up until the pre-op diet so wondering if I am just not losing as fast bc of the prior dieting. Thanks!

What snacks or food to eat on the go

@@Bizziebe27 - I have not had my surgery yet so not sure if this is really a good option but I heard on a blog about these parm puffs that are pretty low in calorie and high in Protein. I plan to order these when I am back on solids. Also, string cheese is easy for on the go. http://www.tsfl.com/Products/Site/TSFL_Products/51PlanMeals/Crunchers/prd~67235.jsp

    Scared out of my mind

@@haleymarie - I have been having a combination of Premier Protein shakes and shakes I am making myself out of a mix of sugar free pudding and Protein powder. They also have 30 G of protein and 160 calories. I am under 1000 calories a day. Confession and pretty please, no judgments :-) : I haven't gone completely off caffeine yet. Still having one cup a day. Do you think that might be it? Also have only been able to get in 50 oz of liquid daily. Will try harder today.
  25. @@mom2wils - My mother only knows that I have been "very strictly" dieting. She is all for me losing weight but she would definitely view surgery as "crazy" and/or "too extreme". I felt that the pre-op, surgery recovery and initial post surgery stage would be difficult enough to deal with even without having judgmental people breathing down my neck and making snarky comments. I know they love me and "want whats best" but what they really want is what is best for their comfort level. I think an additional reason I hesitate to tell people is because I had the lapband approx 10 years ago and was so sick for many years before I finally had it removed...and never lost more than a few lbs with it so I have seen first hand how judgmental (and sometimes even cruel) people can be. Best of luck keeping things under wraps, with your surgery, recovery and great success to you as well!
