@@Kyn13 It will most likely depend on your Surgeon. At higher BMIs, they often want a weight loss prior to surgery so there are less risks. You may have a pre-op diet to reduce the size of your liver and you will certainly lose weight then. The fact that you lost a good amount during your supervised program is great!! Don't stress - whatever happens will be for the best. Good luck!

Stomach stretching
KristenLe replied to sanjumelts's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not in my world. It's not allowed on my plan with the sleeve or rny. -
I would get protein water for a day in the heat. That way even if you don't end up eating - you're getting some protein. You could also bring foods that have alot of water (watermelon, cucumbers).

@@fancypants67 My plan doesn't recommend baby food - although some others do. Baby food sucks though - so you're better off finding alternatives. You have to watch for sugars in baby food as well. -
@@Myka99 Potatoes would be more filling (so you would eat less). Quinoa would tend to go through your sleeve quickly and you could potentially eat more without being satisfied. I'm just guessing though - I don't know for sure. I will actually ask next week at my post op diet meeting.

@@Sarellen5 My SO and I also spend a lot of time at restaurants/bars, etc. At some point, you'll be able to do that again - you'll just be eating differently / drinking differently. There are alot of restaurants that have options that you'll be able to have once you are out a few months. You'll be able to find other things to enjoy that isn't focused on food. Just keep in mind - you are having the surgery - your husband isn't - so don't get upset if he continues to eat/drink as he does now. Communicate with each other! Now if that doesn't get your husband on-board, nothing will!

Happiness with overall total weight loss so far?
KristenLe replied to jpt.30175's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
@@jpt.30175 Do you look at before and after pictures of yourself? You must look like a different person - one who is clearly NOT a failure! Celebrate your success!!!! -
@@SubieGal28 20 lbs in 3 weeks is excellent! If you don't lose 30 - you didn't fail - 30 lbs is a lot in a month!!! You will continue to lose as long as you continue on the plan - you won't be a failure.

My therapist asked me what food I felt like I could not do without post-op. Pizza was the only thing I could think of. Once you can eat foods - there's some great bariatric friendly pizza recipes. My therapist suggested a portabello mushroom filled with pizza toppings. Stay strong! -
Gastric Sleeve gas pain vs Gallbladder Gas pain
KristenLe replied to Heidi.E's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@Sarellen5 I haven't had surgery yet but some have said it was less painful that gallbladder surgery. The thing that helps the most is walking, moving around, and maybe a heating pad. Some say gas-x help - but I'm doubtful - the gas is in your abdominal cavity - gas x won't do anything to help that. I was in so much pain BEFORE my gallbladder surgery that the gas pain after didn't even register with me. -
@@Myka99 This is what my program says... 5-6 small meals / day (3 hours in between) focusing on Protein (first) and produce. We are not "allowed" bread, Pasta or rice. We are allowed potatoes though. The Water is key as well! And of course we should be exercising (that will be my biggest obstacle). I haven't had my official post-op diet meeting yet but I believe the portion size is 2-4 ozs per meal. I would have more carbs from fruits and veggies instead of the quinoa (that seems as though it would be a slider food). Just remember - you have lost 23 lbs and that is excellent! Keep the faith!!! :-)

I'm setting myself up for failure.
KristenLe replied to garciagiss's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would tell you to contact your psych person on your Team but I'm assuming you don't have one local. I go to bi-weekly therapy to get my emotional eating and mindless eating under control preop. It should be a requirement - it really has helped. The 2 week preop diet is not about weight loss but about shrinking your liver so surgery is safer. You need to get on it now and not cheap - you're are risking complications. I know it sucks but you've gotta get it done. Sent from my KFFOWI using the BariatricPal App -
@@Myka99 What is a typical day look like? Are you getting enough protein?

I strongly encourage counseling for eating disorders (emotional eating) - it has really helped me pre-surgery.

Anyone dreading being alone in hospital?
KristenLe replied to reachbree's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@reachbree Please reconsider having your little ones come to the hospital. Speaking on behalf of a child, seeing Mom in a hospital bed hooked up to needles and beeping machines is scary as hell! Surgical floors are very different from OB floors. Others may be in pain (making it known) or have significant illnesses - and you don't want your children witness any of that. You will be exhausted - and won't be able to hold your 2 year old (and it would be hard not to). The children will be scared. I have been that child and at 48 years old still remember the feeling and the worry. I still remember walking through the hospital halls holding my Dad's hand. I also worked in hospitals for years and have seen the reaction of children - it's very scary. -
The concern would be blood clots. If you travel - ask about blood thinners.

Oh no!!! Keep drinking and rest in the shade!!! That's a nightmare when NOT only on a clear liquid diet!

Bariatricpal.com is a forum - with some particular sections that are "support groups". I come on this forum for information and to learn from those who have been through this before - I don't come on here for love and support. I get that from my family and friends. I get support from counseling through my Bariatric Program. I want to be successful and the more information and guidance I get from others who have been successful - the better! I don't want a pat on the back and a "love fest". If I am doing something detrimental to my success - then I'm all for getting a kick in the pants by someone with knowledge. If I don't want opinions on what I'm doing - then I don't ask! Simple as that! Knowledge wins!

How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?
KristenLe replied to thomas1984's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would ask how you begin to tell a Dr. that you attempted to eat that much and could. We go through a lot of pre-op education and receive post-op instructions and they are very clear that you need to reduce and monitor portion size and we should NOT be over-eating. It will be a little hard to blame a surgeon when you didn't follow post-op instructions. The OP indicated that the surgeon clearly made a mistake - and proceeded to say he ate 20 oz steak. People had input that he shouldn't have eaten that much - regardless of how much he "could" eat and that it would be advisable to discuss this with his surgeon and not immediately blame the surgeon (that won't benefit anyone). That's not judging him - it's providing solicited opinions/advice. Sorry they aren't wrapped up in a pretty bow and you don't feel they show enough "compassion". -
Gotta Get Off the RNY vs. Sleeve Seesaw: Heads or Tails, help me out!
KristenLe replied to gina171's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
RNY is a longer surgery (under anesthesia for longer). The re-routing of the intestines is also more "complicated". They are also modifying the stomach in a similar fashion to the Sleeve - but they don't remove the old stomach. Both surgeries are "major" surgeries and both have risks. The biggest issue with me preferring sleeve over RNY is mal-absorption concerns. Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App -

I HOPE you meant 6" and not 6'!But guys, why isn't anyone talking about the fact that @@jennjones5 is eating 6' sandwiches with all fixings? I only ate a measly 1/12th of that Best, Sanju One reason is because she's 6 months out from surgery - big difference. She also didn't ask what our thoughts were on the fact she ate a 6" sandwich (in 2 meals - only 30 minutes apart). This post needs to be put to bed! -
This new "everyone deserves a trophy" BS... which seems to have created a generation of people whining and complaining accusing others of being "hateful" or "judgmental" when the opinion/advice given is not exactly what they wanted to hear - or not wrapped up in a pretty bow!!! WTF people - how thin is your damn skin!!!??? If you don't want opinions then don't fricken ask!!! This is not group counseling!!!

Is it okay to take Phentermine while on the liquid diet?
KristenLe replied to PRINCESS2218's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, phentermine is not a life saving medication. Opinions aren't "judgmental" - they are shared opinions in response to someone asking a question. Our opinion is that phentermine is dangerous - that's not being sanctimonious. If people don't want others opinions then please don't ask. Phentermine can cause significant complications during surgery. As everyone said - of course discuss with the surgeon.
