Im thinking that because with the band we're used to the feeling of restriction it doesnt feel much different with the bypass. The slower weightloss would also be related to banders being used to eating smaller portions, so the change in caloric intake is not as extreme.
When you think about going from eating huge 3 course meals to a tiny 6 oz stomach the shock to the system would be much greater = more sudden/dramatic weightloss.
I just hope that the cgange in hormones and reduced interest in food will sustain weightloss over a long period. Unlike the miserable band.

All this just goes to prove how ineffective and basically incorrect the BMI scale is.
In Australia, like the rest of the world, we work in Kilos and Centimetres (metric), so my numbers might not mean much to most readers. But back 25 years ago when i was diagnosed and hospitalized as annorexic; very thin to look at and by measurements, my weight of 48 kilos was just barely below the "recommended" lowest bmi weight of 54 kilos !!! But i was very very sick! Just crazy!!
My height of 165cms shows a healthy range of 54-74 kilos.
The bmi takes no account for varying bone density or muscle mass.
I would be very happy to weigh 75 kilos again. I could wear any outfit and looked slim and healthy.
I'd be very worried if my doctors started telling me i should weigh 54 kilos again!!
My nutritionist says they're aiming for us to lose about 60% of our excess weight. Not to fit into the healthy bmi range.
But it would be nice to sctually look slim????

The scales they use at the support group gives a lot of info, current weight BMI, age, height, ideal weight and more. I have always been 5'9" but since becoming a senior it appears I am not 2" closer to the ground.
The scales say my ideal weight would be 140lbs. Like most people I don't think that would work for me. I was going to try for 195-200 but have adjusted it to 175. It may change but got to get there first to see how I'll feel.
Thankfully there are support groups like this and they provide great information, advise and encouragement.

    My goal weight is 250. I'm 6'4"
I chose this as a goal because it was the weight I was in high school.....in excellent shape due to year round weight lifting, football, wrestling and overall very active.
The BMI scale would have shown me obese/overweight at this weight.....yet my body fat percentage was 15% when checked at football camps.
I'm closing in on 250......almost there. It's going to be a different 250, though. The muscles are gone....replaced with arthritis. lol. Yup....it'll be a different 250, but it sure beats the crap out of where I was this time last year !!!

@@Luckygrl I think the surgeon's always are conservative in the amount they say we can lose. They're going by published statistics based on the average amount lost by procedure (sleeve). I believe the standard is 60% of excess weight. They don't want to give you unrealistic goals. My surgeon was careful to say what the average weight loss is but that many lose more than that if they follow their plan.

I'm still a fatty according to the BMI chart. That said, my pants are an 8, and my actual body fat is in the athletic range.
I don't give a rat's ass about the BMI indicator. Most athletes show as overweight or obese because of the way they are built.
The BMI chart is bull poopy.

YES. I would have to get to 129 to have a healthy BMI, and my goal is 160. I will re-evaluate when I get to 160. I can't even wrap my mind around being *that* small.

Back in my 20's when i was borderline anorexic i was totally hyper critical of my face. I was actually very pretty and had been approached for modelling on several occasions...but in my mind i was ugly!! I picked apart everything about my face. A therapist told me that "the closer we are to being perfect the more critical we are about ourselves".

I had to call my NUT today just to confirm that I really should start my pureed/ soft foods phase on tomorrow. It seems that the norm on these boards are two weeks of liquids so i just wanted to clarify. She said absolutely yes...I feel as if I'm ready because I have actually been hungry today and look forward to something different. She said that being on Clear Liquids for an entire week can lead to Vitamin deficiencies. Also, it will hopefully make it easier for my Vitamins intake being able to take them after real food. What were some of the first soft foods did you try?
Also, I asked about the Vitamin patch, because I hate taking vitamins... she said it was a scam because Vitamins can't be absorbed through the skin. Different strokes for different folks I guess

I had my lap band and RNY done at the same time, as well as my gallbladder removed and hernia repair on April 12th . I may be a big wimp but it hurts! Yes the port area is a little more tender then the rest. But the pain does get so much better everyday. I'm 13lbs down in 2 weeks.

jnt1 reacted to CHM in Dumping question...
I have dumped 3 times in my 3 post-op months.
The first was from Tomato Soup 2 weeks out. I didn't read the label (which was especially silly since I've ALWAYS been a label reader) and ended up grabbing one with high-fructose corn Syrup as the third ingredient. Surely the crushed saltine I'd added didn't help either. Oops.
The second was from 'tasting' rice as I cooked it, trying to get the seasoning right. I didn't intend to have any with my own dinner, but I didn't want to serve it bland either. It took a few too many adjustments, resulting in more than the one or two tastes I'd intended. That was by far my worst dumping episode. I ended up sleeping on the bathroom floor because I literally did not have the strength or energy to make it directly across the hall to the guest room.
My final dump was from Pasta. Plain, salted, al dente Pasta fresh from the pot has always been a weakness, and I had a weak day. A few too many 'tastes' and here we go again.
I've never dumped from volume, and seem capable of handling reasonable amounts of fat and sugar. My issue seems to be with starches.

I'd not usually reply to a post like yours because you're really in need of stuff that I'm not much good at..
But there's something that I'd really like to say to you...
I know you're a little messed up at the moment and that's ok..
You've got your sh*t to sort out and I'm pretty sure you'll get there...
The reason I'm sure you'll get there is because you have what many of us here do not have...
    Youth...
Now, I'm not calling you a kid...
    But you're a young woman..
And as far as I'm concerned, you're a smart young woman...
Not only that but you're a courageous young woman...
At the YOUTHFUL age of 22 (nearly23) you've had the balls to step up and take control of your life...
You've done that now, before you get to the point that some of us old relics got to..
    You know the stuff...
    Creaking bones...
    Aching joints...
    Flabby bits..
Honestly, that some madd decision making skillz... (I'm all over the cool talkin' stuff, yo)

    Long term consequences ????
I freaking had this surgery just for the long term consequences !!!!!
    Don't you go scaring me.
Seriously, the long term BENEFITS are going to be awesome. You will not grow up to be an old person, like I did, with weight issues.
You've taken steps to prevent this.
Please.......take a deep breath.....think about this......you have taken the RIGHT steps to avoid being an old and broken down person. Your joints will thank you later. Damn....if only you could see my limping stride and you'd understand what I'm saying.
Depression.......anxiety.....those are separate beasts to battle.
Obesity......darling, you have just kicked that to the curb.
Stay the course and focus on the other issues on their individual field of battles.
You will have equal great success with them.

    Hi Kitty!
Sorry to hear you are having a rough time. I hear that it is common for people to be on an emotional rollercoaster after surgery. Losing weight releases hormones and can make you emotional.
I've battled with anxiety my whole life. I've been on Zoloft for a few years and that helps a lot. The doctors let me stay on it and even take Ativan when needed (haven't needed it) during this surgery process.
Sometimes I have thoughts about my long term future and get worried (will I ever be able to eat normal again, will I ever be able to have a drink socially again, OMG what's gonna happen to my skin? Am I going to look worse with all that skin?). Anyways...when I have those thoughts, I just redirect myself to the present. So far everything has gone great. Is this surgery/situation ideal? No! Of course I envy skinny people who never "ruined" their bodies in the first place and don't have to go through this. But you know what, we did, for whatever reason. But we have chosen better for our futures and took a huge courageous step. I'm very proud of myself for making this commitment and having the courage to do this. Just take it one step at a time and enjoy those numbers going down on that scale!!
Feel free to contact me anytime. I'm in the same boat and I'm a therapist, so I'm a good listener.
    Keep your chin up!!
