You never know why someone else had complications. The facts remain that the risk for this surgery is very low when you do what you're supposed to do. As others have stated, you're more in danger driving to and from work every day. That being said, it is a risk. Only you can decide if it's worth it or not.

I have been lifting weights and doing light cardio to get my body out of couch potato mode. I want to be as healthy as I can be on surgery day and prepare myself for an active lifestyle after surgery.

The sleeve is a tool that you're going to use to lose as much weight as you're willing to work for. There is no magical formula inside of the sleeve that says you're only going to lose 70 pounds. That's ridiculous and I'm personally upset that was said by a "professional." The game doesn't change... Weight loss is still going to be about eating less than you burn.

ajbishop2 got a reaction from Ruth1ess in Work in healthcare - what to tell them?
If you don't want to tell anybody, don't! You certainly don't have to tell anybody what you're surgery is for.
However, I told my coworkers and my boss. I am confident in my decision. I shared some material with them from my binder that I got from the Bariatric center. If you're confident, educated, and excited, why not tell people about the journey you're on? I have been met with nothing but support and curiosity. There is a stigma associated with WLS but there doesn't have to be if we could be more open about it.

Are they sending you home on a blood thinner? I'll have to give myself injections every day for a week after I go home. Physical activity and plenty of hydration along with following all doctors orders is really all you can do once you're home. If anything feels weird, call the doctor.

If you've been on the pre-op for a week and you've lost 5 pounds... That means you've cut 17,500 calories over the past week. It is pretty difficult to lose 5lbs in a week, especially if you aren't counting calories (as you said). Keep that in perspective and don't lose hope. You're doing fine and you have control over your own success!

Hi everyone! I am BRAND new to this forum. I am looking for support, encouragement, and advice... I think I have come to the right place! I am going through the Bariatric process with Kansas City Bariatric. I have been working with my case manager for over a year, fulfilling requirements and preparing. I am so flippin' excited I could scream!
With that excitement comes some anxiety. I've been waiting for so long... It's finally real now! My surgery has been approved and scheduled for 3/30. I was given a binder with very specific pre-op and post-op instructions. I plan on following the guidelines to a "T"... I love having things written down and in front of me.
My biggest issue over the years has been my huge appetite. I am ready to be DONE with this and get BACK to the gym and BACK to my life! I am so happy to be able to use this tool to help me succeed.
I am 5'4 and 275lbs. I'm 25 years old. I'm going to my pre-op appt on 3/10 and my liquid diet starts on 3/23.
I know this isn't going to be easy. It'll be tough and I might be wondering if I made the right choice at first... But I KNOW this is right for me.
Is anyone else having surgery this month and wanting to talk? I'm cool with sharing anything from my binder or anything I have heard while going through my program over the last year. I'm cool with everything! Lol. Let's talk!

    Inner Surfer Girl,
I am attending a support group already twice a month and meeting with a therapist once a month. I ended up really liking the guy who gave me my initial clearance so I just kept on seeing him! It has all been really helpful for me and less weird than I thought it would be. Thank you for the well wishes!

    GW: 165
    Surgery date: 3/30/16
I am reflecting on a moment that really hurt me.
When I was 20, I went on a crazy 8-month long diet. I barely ate 1200 calories a day and I worked out vigorously at the gym. I didn't care what kind of calories I ate (didn't care about protein) and many days I dipped well below 1200 just to see results. I went from 230 to 150 in 7 months. Every conversation I had was about calories and working out. People were worried about me. My face looked sunken in. I was starving. I started eating a more normal amount and continued working out. My weight crept up to 160. Before I knew it, I was back up to 180. As soon as I stopped starving myself, all of my weight came back. Well...
I had gone to my PCP at some point during my weight loss. They had a recorded weight of around 160 for me. I went in a few months later for a Pap smear- side note... My PCP is a wonderful man who has been seeing me since I was a child, however, other people in the office are not great- I decided I wanted the nurse practitioner to do my pap because I wanted a female. This was my FIRST PAP EVER! So... I was half naked on a table, terrified of what was about to happen, when this blonde, skinny, young nurse practitioner walks in. She was looking at my chart and she threw it down on the counter. She said... "Are you aware of how much weight you've gained?" I said "ummm I am here for a Pap smear, I don't want to talk about my weight with you."
-Weight is ALWAYS a sore subject, but it is especially sore after you know you've gained when you shouldn't have and you're not emotionally mature enough to handle this BS!!!-
Ok, so she insisted on talking about my weight over and over again. She told me I'm going to die early and that I'll never be happy as an overweight person. I started crying and continued to cry all throughout the pap. I didn't want her to touch me. I didn't want her to look at me. It was just a really awful experience.
It has been 5 years since that incident. I have kept my weight gain to about 30lbs since. Despite her rude ass comments and chilling demeanor, I have been happy. I can thank her for that challenge. I have cute clothes to wear and a plethora of friends and a loving, healthy boyfriend who is happy for me and supportive. I am in a good place, and I am FAT.
Because I'm in a good place, and have been for quite awhile now, I am so very excited about my upcoming sleeve gastrectomy. I want the tool. I can't wait to be healthier and more active. I'm happy I'm doing it now so I can finish enjoying my life. I would like to write that nurse practitioner a letter, but I'd have a hard time being nice!
