  1. Started soft solids today, 10 days post-op (2 days early). 1 egg + 1/4 cup egg beater + a dollop of plain greek yogurt to smooth it out, scrambled, + reduced sugar ketchup Went down fine. I just had to eat slowly. Took about 25 minutes to eat. Protein Shake Ricotta bake (I changed the recipe that's been floating around by doing half cottage cheese, adding spinach, and adding some parmesan) Filled an 8oz ramekin with the ingredients, which I knew would probably be too big for a meal. I was right. I finished about half of it over 25 minutes and felt uncomfortable and had a little bit of pain. My stomach "sleeve" did not feel physically full. I just felt it in my lower esophagus... which I guess is my stomach now. I don't know, I guess I don't know what full feels like anymore. I finished the rest after waiting 15 minutes, and the second half took about 20 minutes. I'm very happy to be eating normalish food again, but I may have overdone it with the portion for dinner and introducing too much on my first soft solids day.
  2. 4 days post-op and you're already eating refried beans?? Lucky. I'm 9 days post-op and the most solid thing I've eaten is greek yogurt. My program said I can start adding soft solids (scrambled eggs, refried beans, some pureed stuff, thoroughly chewed soft chicken) on day 12 or 13, but I'm going to start tomorrow. The past 2 days I've only consumed like 350 calories because I'm so tired of yogurt!
  3. My surgery was August 12. On August 14, the day after I was discharged, I was up 1lb, which was to be expected, since I was still eliminating the IV fluids. Two days later, on August 17, 5 days after surgery, I stepped on the scale and I was shocked I had lost 19lbs. Now, August 20, 8 days after surgery, I'm down 1 more (-20lbs).
  4. I’ve seen some hospital webpages say only clear liquids for up to 2 weeks after the sleeve! My surgeon said clear liquids the first 2 days, then full liquids starting on day 3 if I can tolerate it. Nonfat Greek yogurt is the thickest full liquid on the list of full liquids. I’ve been eating the Greek yogurt since day 3 and it stays down. Takes me about 3-4 minutes to eat a 5oz container.
  5. I'm 5 days post-op, and I've been hitting my protein goal (70g) with 2 premier protein shakes per day, plus 2 light and fit greek yogurts.
  6. Feeling hungrier. I put some light whipped cream on jello, but my stomach didn't like it. I'm guessing because of all the air in the whipped cream. Still living on yogurt, protein shakes, and Gatorade Zero. I've tried broth a couple times, but hot liquids just don't taste good to me right now.
  7. I’ve had no trouble keeping clear or full liquids down, and I’m tolerating nonfat Greek yogurt, jello, and V8. I actually consumed almost 600 calories today with no discomfort, and I’m starting to feel hungry again, which worries me...
  8. When did the pain kick in for you? Im in the hospital, my procedure was at 2pm. Right now I have very little pain. Just some soreness. I keep waiting for it to come but nothing. Hoping I’m in the clear. I had only minor gas pain as long as I was lying completely still. However, getting in and out of bed caused a minute or so of excruciating incision pain. But once I was walking, it helped a lot with the gas pain. In terms of days and pain, they went like this from most to least painful: 2 (discharged), 1 (surgery), 3, 4 (today). I’ve been using the oxycodone less and less, and I can finally sleep on my left side.
  9. I just noticed your username, and wanted to say I just started watching Outlander a couple weeks ago! My surgery was Monday, I was discharged yesterday, and I’ve already watched 2 episodes today. Almost done with season 2. It’s helping to distract me from the pain.
  10. I’m about 48 hours post-op. Surgery was Monday at 10am. No complications. Monday and Tuesday were rough. I felt like I was in much more pain than I should have been. I couldn’t reach or bend and getting in and out of bed or in and out or a sitting position was so excruciating I would yell whenever I felt the incision pain. The hospital (Mass General in Boston) thought I was doing well and discharged me yesterday, about 28 hours post-op. The ride home was painful, even in the passenger seat, reclined. I definitely felt a lot of regret, especially on Tuesday, which was more painful than the 12 hours after surgery. I haven’t been sleeping well. It was very hard to sleep in the hospital, even with earplugs. The longest period of sleep I’ve had was this morning, from like 6am to 9am. The gas pain is subsiding, and the incision pain is less than it was last night. I’m up now walking in circles around the around and taking little sips of Gatorade Zero and Premiere Protein. Feeling a lot better than yesterday. Extra strength Tylenol and occasional oxycodone only when absolutely needed is helping, as well as ibuprofen, which I can only take through tomorrow.
  11. Surgery is tomorrow morning at MGH in Boston. I’m nervous and excited!
  12. I've had depression most of my life that has sometimes been mild and manageable and sometimes resulted in deep depressive episodes that last months. My surgery is in 3 days and I'm very worried about how my depression is going to respond to not having one of the things that brings me happy brain chemicals (fattening, carby, delicious food). I discussed this with the psychiatrist I met with pre-surgery and she just said to keep a close eye on my mental health. But I'm still very worried.

    Hello Gay Sleevers

Surgery is a week from tomorrow. Currently freaking out about loose skin and feeling bad about myself because I'll never look anything like this:
  14. I've just decided to tell a few coworkers. I didn't know what else to do. I'm going to be out of work for 2 weeks, then come back and not be able to go out to lunch or drinks and start rapidly losing weight. I didn't think there was a way around it.
  15. After a false start in 2016, my surgery date is in 2 weeks (August 12)! At MGH in Boston. Pre-op diet started today.

Any other gay sleevers out there?

I'm having trouble losing weight pre-surgery, so I'm going to try to put myself on a liquid diet with the BariatricAdvantage products.

I'm struggling to lose the 15-20 pounds I need to lose before surgery. I've actually gained a few pounds instead. Have another follow-up appointment today with my program NP, and I'm scared.
  19. Frustrated. Having trouble losing the pre-op weight, so surgery window pushed out to June.

    F#*%ING REFERRALS!

I started exploring bariatric surgery in October and it's now it's almost April, and I'm only about halfway through the pre-surgery process. It would be easy to blame this on the hoops my insurance company is making me jump through, but the real culprit here is my PCP. Or my PCP's office. They are so terrible with referrals. And with my insurance (Tufts), you can't sneeze without a referral, or you'll be charged full price for it. For example, I'll call my PCP's office to tell them I need 3 more appointments each with my hospital surgical weight loss program assigned NP and dietician, and they say "Well, we normally don't do referrals for those, since we have NPs and a dieticians on staff." I calmly explain for the 4th time that it is for a weight loss surgery program, which I was referred to by my PCP. They whine and complain ("6 appointments? That's a lot, we already had you down for 6 in the past 3 months...") and then they finally relent, but then ask for the provider's insurance number and fax number. WTF? I don't know? Shouldn't they be able to find this out in a directory somewhere? And fax number? There's not even a fax number on the hospital's website (because it's 2016). Then, I'll have the appointment, something goes through as a different provider (the head doctor at the hospital program instead of the NP for example), so it doesn't match up with the referral, and then I get a bill for $600 that I either have to pay for resolve. Variations of this have happened several times with appointments, imaging and blood work. I have an Excel spreadsheet trying to reconcile the service provided, the provider, the charge, whether I got a referral for it, how much I was charged, etc., but it's all so disorganized. I'm pretty sure I've outright overpaid about $600 because of bungled referrals and had another $400 charged to my deductible when it should have been covered by just a co-pay. I just want to know -- Is this normal?

Hi! I'm new to the forum (and gay). I haven't had the sleeve surgery yet, but my surgical date will likely be in early May. It's nice to know I can come back to this thread for info in the future. I'm Sean, by the way.
