    The over 40 crowd

I'm 43, and will be 44 before I have the surgery. I looked in to the possibility of the surgery 10 years ago and then dismissed it. I do wish I'd gone ahead then, but I'm happy that it's happening now. I can't wait to feel the additional energy everyone talks about!

  6. I want to be able to go to an amusement park and ride all the rides. Play sports with my 3 teens. Be able to walk all day if need be. I want to run 5K on a regular basis. When I get to goal I'm going to do the edge walk at the CN Tower in Toronto. I want to be able to shop from any store I want to. Keep up with my hubby. A bucket list is a great idea! Zip-lining in Peurto Rico would be awesome too.

    Any Canadians RNY

@@MichelleZip I'm in Courtice and going through TWH. I had my orientation last month, social worker in June, Nurse in July and Nutrition class in August. Did you know we have a support group? We meet for coffee every week. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I live in Ontario and our provincial plan doesn't cover VSG unless we have medical conditions that make bypass more difficult such as scarring. Since I've never had any other surgeries, it will be bypass for me. I think I'd prefer VSG for all the reasons people have mentioned, but I'm okay with RNY as well. The upside is that other than the Optifast and Vitamins post-op, there is no cost to me. I also don't have my surgery date yet. It can take 6 - 2 months from the original orientation - which I had last Monday. The other bonus is that I have met a great support group - all but one have had the RNY so I have a good idea of what to expect.

    Just getting started...

I'm in Canada, so it will probably be different. I had an orientation this past Monday, and received my next 3 appointments- June Social Worker, July Nurse Practitioner and August Nutrition class. I'm kind of disappointed because it feels like it's taking way too long but I have to deal with it.
  14. I think I'd be inclined to go with the regular bypass- just to make sure you don't need a 3rd surgery. But I'm sure your surgeon can advise you best.
  15. In Ontario, you can only get the sleeve if you have a medical condition that justifies it. They say Bypass is the Gold Standard and since the government pays, they want to pay for what they know works. I think in 10 years time they will give the choice of either - who knows, maybe sooner. But for me it will be bypass and because I suffer from heartburn, I've decided I'd rather not have the sleeve.
  16. I don't really have any advice for you. It's not usually presto at 35- at least not in Canada- to have gastric bypass with a 35 BMI in Canada, you have to have at least 1 co-morbidity. Good luck! I hope you find what you're looking for.
  17. I've been thinking more about this. I think keeping it off is the biggest factor. If I was somehow able to lose all the excess weight before surgery (hypothetically) I'd still want the surgery. I don't ever want to be this weight again. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I can't say anything more than what everyone else has. I have managed to lose 50-60 lbs twice in the last 10 years and I've always gained it back. I'm now back to my highest weight ever. I'm a year older than you and because of the way our health insurance works in Ontario, it's almost a guarantee I will be having gastric bypass. I'm worried about possible long term effects of malabsorption but I'm worried about the long term effects of being obese more. And I'm more scared of getting to 53 and still wishing I'd had the surgery. Having said all of that we all have to live with the repercussions of our decisions and only you know what is right for you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Welcome to CANADA!!! lol- Actually I'm in ONtario - which from what I've read is probably the best province. Some have 3 to 5 year waits!! I was referred by my dr. in February and have my orientation on April 18th. From that date, I then have approximately 6-12 months before my surgery.... On the bright side, from what I've read - most people are covered to have the surgery. Good luck! I hope it goes quickly for you from here on out.

    Looking for others in Canada

I couldn't get it to work in the app I don't think- but on the website- I just clicked your name and then the button in the top right that said Add as friend.

    Skinny spouses

My spouse doesn't want me to have surgery- I can't say that he isn't supportive, but he doesn't understand at all and he's seen me lose weight so he knows I can. He doesn't realize how hard it is for me every time I gain it back. He is 5'10" and weighs 165 post vacation. He's never had a weight problem. So he keeps telling me I can lose weight without the surgery. I already have a job outside the home and am not lacking in confidence for the most part but I really do worry about how he will be after I lose all the weight- I've never been "skinny". When we got married I weighed 210 lbs, and now I'm 280 lbs... I've managed to get down to 220 lbs a couple of times, but never been able to keep it off. I think the reason he doesn't want me to have surgery is that he's worried about the safety of it.... I'm hoping he will come with me to some of my appointments. My friends and family on the other hand have been completely supportive. I have 3 very close friends who are totally supportive, and several other close friends that are also very supportive. My parents and sister have all volunteered to come with me to the appointments, and my mom said she would help out after the surgery. I guess I just worry about the impact that the surgery will have on our relationship. I'm hoping it will be better, but I don't know. I'm definitely going through with it no matter what though.
