Hi! Yes I had a thyroidectomy in 2005 and have been on levothyroxin since then. I'm 53, post menopause and have lost 44 lbs in sixteen weeks. I never would have thought it possible!

Wow, I'm so sorry for you. I can kind of relate. I got a blood clot and surgery had to be pushed back for three months but it wasn't like I had a date and had done the preop diet. I'd be crushed. I have no advice just feel so bad for you.

[mention=269602]joann454[/mention], what is your diet like a day? and your exercise routine?i'm just not losing anything since like 2 weeks post surgery and so it's been minimum 3 weeks with no weight loss.
It just really sucks...
I don't blame you for being frustrated at all. I'm eating low carb and around 1000 calories a day. It really varies but I try not to consume more than 20-30 carbs. My weight loss feels slow compared to some but I'm very pleased so far. I hope your stall breaks soon. I have had many in just three months.
Oops, edited to add that I'm just walking and lifting weights (neither vigorously either)

I just did the math and I'm losing an average of 11 lbs a month. It's just not linear. I'll stall for two weeks and then drop. Just keep doing what you're supposed to and you'll see results.

Yeah, I know I have to do it.
I have to get healthy for myself and my wife and kids.
In addition to all the discomfort of being so big, I have several health issues that need to be addressed.
I just have to be strong.

You got this my friend! I know you're scared and you know I was too. Your time has come and I'm so excited for you! Can't wait to hear your journey! Stay strong!Walter.Sobchak reacted to this -
Eating 800 calories since March. And gaining 30lbs almost is a real concern.

That's what I'm thinking as well. If it's not a thyroid issue something else is going on. I "couldn't lose weight" and was convinced of it, till I went on the preop diet and lost 15lbs in two weeks.
I wasn't weighing measuring or tracking food before preop but still thought I was eating well. Clearly I was not. I too wonder if the OP can't lose weight and actually gained on 800-1000 calories how this surgery will help. I'd have my thyroid checked and suggest really looking at what is actually being eaten. The math doesn't add up.FluffyChix and dreamingsmall reacted to this -
How much weight do you need to lose and by when? How many carbs are you eating? I did low carb (under 20g) and low fat preop and lost 15 lbs. three months out from surgery I do low carb higher fat and have lost 44 lbs I would have to agree to cut carbs significantly to reach your qualifying goal weight for surgery.

well... you'll lose more weight on average and run no risk of developing GERD. your ghrelin (hunger) levels will be lower and you'll experience more positive changes in gut bacteria. and you'll enjoy a much longer track record of success and treatment. and RNY is reversible, the sleeve is not.
to be honest, i can't think of one reason why anyone would get the sleeve instead, but i don't wanna open that can o' worms again. <_>
RNY is reversible? -

Yes, I also prefer to use the term diet the same way as applies to wild animals. "The squirrel's diet consists of nuts and gazelles" etc.
What kind of scary ass squirrels live near you?Berry78 and Uterno reacted to this -
I just started eating soft foods today. Was on TPN for 7 weeks. I am praying that my leak is healed. I should know within the next 2 weeks. Have been out of work pretty much since my surgery date of 4/4/17. Have lost 60 lbs. But still have my pickline. If this doesn't work, I really just want a bypass instead of a stent. I hear they are so painful. My doc said they need to wait like 8 months before turning a sleeve into a bypass. He said if they did it now, "It would be a warzone". So I am praying, praying, praying for all of us with complications. Keep us posted everyone, it really helps to see all the posts.
I've been following your story for a while now. I think I'd rather the bypass over a stent too. So sorry for all of you suffering and hoping that in the end you all end up happy and pain free.Goggyween reacted to this -
For real, the amount of conflicting advice and recommendations out there vis a vis this surgery is enough to drive a person completely bonkers.
Crush pills/pills are fine not crushed
Eat this after surgery/don't eat this
Some peopl;e get to eat this/some people get to not eat
Work out/don't work out
Damn, y'all.
Lol! For real! I was so frustrated and then I found myself deciding that I was agreeing with the things I liked VS the things I didn't (like, woohoo I don't have to exercise even though my surgeon said I should). I realized what I was doing and decided I need to do what my surgeon said. It's amazing how it varies from program to program. -
I just had my teeth worked on last month and it was killing me to chew the Vitamins and calcium chews. I just started swallowing the vitamins and using liquid calcium citrate for a few days till
I could go back to my chewies. -
I eat Pork rinds and cracklins frequently. The fried aspect is not really a concern for me since the calories to serving is within allowed tolerances for me. I used to count the Protein towards my daily goal, but after realizing that it is merely collagen protein, it doesn't really count. Collagen is the lowest quality protein out there.
We use them frequently to "bread" chicken breast or fish fillets that we air fry.
I can't believe I never thought of using them for "breading". A whole new world just opened up! I've been using Parmesan cheese but it lacks the crunch I like. Thanks!heycrystal2052 and BigViffer reacted to this -

Medicines can help. But I already take 80mg of 1 antacids and 20ml of another antacid and it doesn't make any difference [emoji20]
Ugh. So sorry [emoji52]Bishbosh reacted to this -
I had an endoscopy but it wasn't spotted. Maybe because it's only very little. But you're correct whilst they were operating they should have spotted it and fixed it. Irony is, the lady I shared a room with at the clinic had a hiatus hernia and he fixed hers. Only saving grace is it can be fixed [emoji4]
Is the only fix for it surgery? -
Your hair looks fabulous! I recently cut mine from mid-back to shoulder too and love it. I don't feel like I need to hide any more.
This is a great thread. It's funny how this surgery affects you in so many ways other than physically. My mind plays tricks on me all the time. Just this week I went to the beach with my son and forgot our chairs. My immediate thought was "If I try to get down in the sand on my beach towel, I won't be able to get back up". Then I remembered that I can get up from the floor now. I also went to dinner on the boardwalk with hubby and the restaurant had an hour wait. The waiting area was outside and I was freezing, so he suggested we walk up the boardwalk a bit to a souvenir shop where I could get a light jacket or sweatshirt. Well my immediate reaction was to say that they won't have anything in there that will fit me, but he made me go anyway. I saw a cute pink zip hoodie but they only had it up to a size large. I said "OMG this is cute but look how small it looks!" He said...."Ummmm that will fit you. You're not 300 lbs any more so try it on." And it did. I almost teared up over being able to walk into any old store and grab something off the rack like a "normal" person. I also find myself constantly wondering if I can fit in a booth, a chair, walk from point "A" to "B", get into or out of a certain position and am still trying to learn this new person I've become. I've realized that I don't even know what style clothing I like because my whole wardrobe has always been whatever fits or best hid my fat. The therapist I had to see pre-surgery suggested that I take weekly selfies to help my mind jive with my body. She said that seeing yourself in a photo gives you a better sense of what other people see as opposed to looking at your reflection in a mirror because your mind will distort it since it's been accustomed to seeing the same person looking back for so long. Good advise - more selfies it is! lol
I can relate to all of this! So happy for you (and me lol).Bohemian101 reacted to this -

I had zero energy for two months. It was so frustrating and I have been losing slowly too. But I'm losing and keep losing. Try not to be discouraged. Many people don't exercise for months after surgery. Hang in there. It'll happen.

Start tracking. You need to be sure. That way you can rule it out. I'd still expect fatigue even when meeting goals. Age, healing, blah blah blah it's just part of the process. You'll feel wonderful soon.

Didn't tell my mother or my sister. Mom was 93 and had dementia. She spent 55 years telling me I was fat, lazy and stupid. She didn't want me to attend my own father's funeral because she thought I was too fat and was going to embarrass her.
My sister, while I lover her, would not have understood.
My husband, two daughters and two friends knew. I had surgery 8/23/1. Mom died 10/1/16. Neither she or my sister know.
What the hell!!! This breaks my heart for you. It amazes me that a mother could be more concerned with how her daughter reflects on her than a daughter who is grieving the loss of her father. Ugh!FluffyChix reacted to this -
Are you tracking your Fluid and Protein intake? If you're hitting your goals then that shouldn't be the issue. Calories could be for sure. It took me 8 weeks to regain my energy and was my worst complaint of the surgery. Hopefully you'll get your energy back before then but if not, rest assured you will eventually.

What are you eating 8 weeks out?

Ack! I was told to be off shakes by eight weeks. I couldn't have done it. I was so over shakes! I feel for you. Wonder why they'd rather you do that over real food.
