    What to do?!

I'm 20 months post VSG. Did not have GERD/Reflux prior to surgery but am now suffering big time. I'm going tomorrow for an esophageal pH study and then will meet with my surgeon to discuss possible treatment. Right now I take protonix 40mg before breakfast, dexilant 60mg before dinner and Zantac 150mg before bed. I had to come off my meds cold turkey a week before the pH study and I'm dying. I can barely drink without esophageal spasms and severe heartburn. I can't wait until Friday so I can take a pill. With that said, I'd do my surgery again if need be, but if you have reflux issued before surgery, I'd think long and hard about bypass

Anyone use a GARMIN gps running watch?

I use a forerunner 10 when I run. I love it! I run intervals a lot and I like the fact that I can set a run/walk interval and it will beep when I change from running to walking so I don't have to keep checking my watch. It has all the functions I need for my activity. I would definitely recommend it for a good entry level gps watch

    Do You Log Your Food?

I started logging the day of my intro seminar in February 2014. I've logged every bite of every day since then. The good, the bad and the ugly. It is what keeps me on track with my nutrition and macronutrients. I plan my meals the night before and log it in to see how my day is shaping up. It's not logged in stone and if I feel like eating something else, I do it. I attribute the success I've had (130 lbs down) to My fitness pal
  4. I lost 100 in 8 months and 130ish to date. I'm 20 months post surgery

    Calcium

@@Ronjohn - calcium carbonate is not recommended for WLS patients. It doesn't give you the supplementation you need and can lead to kidney stones. You should look for calcium citrate. I use the citrical petites and have no problem getting them down
  6. I wasn't s revision, but I was sleeved 20 month ago. I did not suffer from Acid reflux pre surgery but have had a serious case of it post. I take protonix in the morning, dexilant at night before dinner and a Zantac before bed. If I skip a pill or eat the wrong foods I've been known to wake up gagging on stomach acid. It's pretty miserable. If I had a gerd problem pre surgery I would definitely have considered bypass. Oh, I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the time of my sleeve so that's not the cause of my problems. Good luck!

    Have I lost my mind?

I ran my first half marathon using the Galloway run/walk method (4 run/1 walk). I developed a blister at mile 9 and had an 8 minute break at the medical tent and walked more than ran the last mile and we finished in under 3 hours. During my training (it was a 16 week training plan) I had a 2 week break when I had to have my gallbladder removed. We finished the race in under 3 hours. I LOVE the run/walk method. I think you can totally do it. Prior to that race I had only run 1 10k using the same method! You are NOT crazy!!! Good luck!
  8. I'm 20 months out now so my capacity is greater. However looking back at my food logs at 8 weeks I was eating 90% protein. Protein shakes, 2 oz beef, 2-2.5 oz chicken, 3 oz fish or shrimp, Greek yogurt (the majority of a 5.3 oz container), beans, etc. on the rare occasion I had room, I would add in some softer veggies like broccoli or cauliflower. At that point for breakfast I was eating protein shakes and lunches were usually egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. 2-2.5 oz. Hope that helps

    Reflux

I had VSG 20 months ago. I had no reflux before surgery. Since surgery I have had horrible reflux. I'm currently on 40mg protonix in the morning, 60 mg dexilant before dinner and 150 mg Zantac before bed. I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the time of my surgery but have developed another one since. I'm set for a 24 hour esophageal pH monitoring test at the end of the month. I will tell you that reflux can get worse, but there are a bunch of people who never have a problem. I can't advise you one way or another. I can tell you that I told my surgeon that even with the problems I'm having I would trade my surgery for anything and would do it again if need be. Good luck with your surgery!
  10. @@losinglily - that is not a weight gain. You "gained" from the IV fluid they gave you at the time of surgery. You'll pee that out in no time. If it bothers you, stay off the scale for a few days

    Gall Bladder surgery!

I had my gallbladder removed 8 months post surgery. I was down 100 lbs at the time. It was super easy. Surgery was at 8:00 am. I was leaving the hospital by 12:30 and home by 1:30. Surgery was on a Friday and I was back to work on Wednesday (actually I was on a flight for a business trip on Wednesday). I was on liquids the day of surgery and back to regular foods in 2 days. It didn't impact my surgery at all and I'm down 130 lbs
  12. I had Anthem Blue Cross at the time of my surgery. I was approved 2 days after submission. I did not have a waiting period and had surgery about 3 months after my intro seminar
  13. I disagree that a sleeved person can't get their protein from food alone. You may not be able to soon after surgery but I'm 20 months post op and get a minimum of 80 grams of protein, usually in excess of 100 grams, through food alone. It is possible but you have to work up to it. I agree that until you can, shakes are the way to go
  14. Great suggestions, Jess! I love overnight oats before a run also (oats, Greek yogurt, peanut or other nut butter and fair life milk)
  15. Hi! I use oatmeal and peanut butter pre race. During a race I use graham crackers which I like because they basically melt in your mouth and clif shot bloks (1 blok every 2-3 miles gives me a nice steady stream of energy without causing gastric problems). I've used bonk breakers and the jelly beans before also. After a race I like chocolate milk for quick recovery. I'm a sleever, so I don't have issues with dumping. Hope these suggestions help!

    Distance Running

I have the Hollywood half marathon and the tinkerbell half marathon in April and May respectively. I always say I'm never ever going to run a full marathon but then I think to myself that never is a very long time. Right now, I really like the half marathon distance

    Running after surgery..

I started running 4 months after surgery, did my first 10k 8 months after surgery and ran my first 1/2 marathon 2 days before my first surgiversary. In that time period, I also had my gallbladder removed. Good luck with your training!

    Running after surgery..

I've run 2 half marathons and numerous 10ks since my surgery 18 months ago. Hydration and food has not been a problem. I make sure to eat a meal with a mix of protein and carbs before a race (I favor overnight oats with Greek yogurt or Greek yogurt with peanut butter). During a race I make sure to drink at regular intervals and on longer runs I use shot bloks, 1 blok every 2-3 miles. Good luck!!

    Hair loss?

I had hair loss beginning around 3 months post surgery. It lasted about 3 months. I had a ton of hair so the loss was only noticeable to me and my hair stylist. I never stopped coloring my hair during the falling out phase and it all grew back! Good luck!!
