    Discouraged 8mo

I agree with this advice, try varying your calories by day have one day that is 800 calories, the next day you max calories, then something between the two. Try to have no more than two days the same. Have you done the calorie calculations for your goal weight? That should be your maximum calories for your high day.

    Decided to go for it!

It's perfectly normal for you to be anxious. If anyone says they didn't feel a bit nervous at one point they have nerves of steel. This is a game changing decision you made, you should be proud of yourself. Pre-op I wasn't too nervous until the two-week pre-op diet, it became "real" for me then. I kept myself busy by starting a work out/walking routine pre-op and watching what I ate. I read as much as I could and tried to keep my expectations realistic. Even though I was really nervous right before surgery, looking back now it was a cake walk. The hard work begins after surgery and it is totally worth it. I don't suck wind when I exercise anymore, I fit in to a size jean I haven't worn since high school and much much more.
  3. I had my surgery done last year in Mexico, the things i used were: Pajama bottoms (you can wear them after surgery under your gown) Personal toiletries - Tooth brush and paste (my hospital gave us shampoo, conditioner & soap) but I would bring some just in case Slippers Long charging cords for your phone or ipad Gas-x strips (some say they don't work but even if it was a placebo effect it worked for me) A few protein shakes if you arrive a few days before surgery

    I need your help..

UnkemptCaptain There are a ton of meal planning services you can use. Emeals.com has paleo and low carb plans you can subscript to PlateJoy.com has a meal plan you can tailor to your needs. Ketogenic, low-carb , paleo. They suggest meals for you and then give you a shopping list and you cook them up. Both also offer lunch plans too and links to shopping lists for your phones. There are at least 3 or 4 more that you can research too. You said you were lost and even if you signed up for a few months it could start you in the right direction until you get a handle on things.

    Meal ideas

The ricotta bake at that stage was heaven!! I highly recommend making that one. The recipe makes a large amount (for you) so you can portion it out and refrigerate it. Then you have easy heat and eat meals. You'll start getting your energy back now that you are working towards real food. Ideas for soft food stage: Scrambled eggs, nonfat re-fried Beans, ricotta bake, cottage cheese, I made a mini omelette (scrambled eggs with laughing cow cheese). low-fat greek yogurt (you can add Protein powder to it too), egg salad would be good too, oatmeal with Protein Powder.

    Returning to work

I have a desk job and was physically exhausted returning to work 2 weeks after surgery. I also thought I did a great job ( I process payroll) I made big mistakes luckily I paid everyone correctly but it wasn't done right and I had to redo my reports and fix bill payment checks. Everyone is different, but I would be careful.

So - this is what hungry feels like?

My hunger now presents as lower back pain. At first it is a bit of an ache and gets stronger if I don't eat. If I can't eat it then turns in to drooling, dizziness, nausea, and headaches (it is very attractive.)

    Post surgical care after MX

I spoke with my primary care doctor before surgery and he agreed to do my post op labs and followups
  9. For me the premiere protein drinks are too thick and a bit chalky tasting. I prefer a few flavors of syntrax nectar and Jay Robb egg protein powder (I am lactose intolerant). I also like ideal shape protein but they are low in protein so I boost it with genepro

Thank you I thought I was the only one, I always get flagged for my inner thighs and have to be patted down.

    Burping

It could be a sign that you are full. For me it is just my post op life. I burp after drinking, eating, heck I burp just because I am breathing.

    Ice Cream Post Op

I didn't, ice cream is slider food and empty calories, remember that your post op diet is to allow you to heal and build new habits. I am 11 months out and it now matters what I eat not how much I eat. I look back on the agony of my first month as proof that I can live through denying myself things. If you want something different get ramen noodles and use the flavor packets and add in unflavored or chicken flavored Protein powder, the variety is a blessing.
  13. i had barely any pain from surgery. It felt like I did a bunch of situps, sore if I was immobile a little painful (like tiny twinges of pain) if I moved around but mostly I was tired. I walked a lot, my doctor had me on no pain meds when I left the hospital just anti-inflammatories. Everyone's pain tolerance level is different so what other say is the worst pain in their lifte may just be an annoyance to others.

    Dairy-Free Protein

I use the Jay Robb Egg Protein they have it at GNC, they may also sell it on the bariatric pal site too not sure.
  15. I searched the net and here is the link I found http://shopmusclegen.com/genepro-sample?search=Genepro+ I bought a jar and it is flavorless I add it to Protein shakes and juice. It does smell but no flavor.

    Diet After Surgery

To answer your question, no my doctor did not tell me to count calories. They wanted me to get at least 60g of Protein and less than 50g net carbs per day. At first you can eat so little you don't need to worry about calories. Be careful with the carbs though as you can eat a lot more than you think as they are "slider foods" As you get further a long calories will matter, I stay between 800 and 1000 calories per day and maintain the protein and carb goals. Also as you get further a long it will matter what you eat not how much you eat too. On your vegetarian diet I would eat the foods that give you protein first, then veggies and then carbs. Same principle just different foods. P.S. most diet trackers will let you change your "measurements" to track what you want. The one I use let me change my settings to track my protein, carbs and calories so I don't go over. All though you do not need to track your numbers, knowing what you ate helps you later on if you have a stall.

    Chinese Food

Once I was on solid foods I had steamed chicken and vegetables and added my own szechuan seasoning. Rice is out for me too many carbs and it makes me feel weird. I have had general tso's chicken but usually only 2-3 pieces before I am full. Now 10 months out I go for steamed veggies and Protein and I add my own seasoning. It's just not worth the calories for me.

    Sodas

Some folks drink soda some don't or can't. With all things you need to judge for yourself are those calories worth it (if drinking non-diet soda?) I had a sip of soda about 6 months post op, it tasted horrible and the carbonation made me bloated and feel horrible. I couldn't eat my normal meal when the time came, so for me sodas are out. I am 10 months out now and just steer clear of soda and beer they just have too much carbonation for me. If I do have a soda maybe a few sips to half of one every 3 months it is almost flat or flat. To me the flavor that I liked is not the same as I remember so it just isn't worth it. The "negative reinforcement" of the discomfort and horrible taste just has me craving it less and less. Pre-surgery I would have cringed at the thought of no soda ever, now the only problem is when we go out the non-carbonated low calorie options are few and far between.
  21. Sorry you are having such a bad experience. Just making sure you realize this is a sleeve procedure post so malabsorption really isn't a problem.

    Newbie question

Nope, one thing you will learn is almost every surgeon has a different philosophy as to what is right and wrong. Some folks have 6 week diets, some have 2 week diets, some folks have 3 day diets, some have none. The diets even vary, some are only Protein, some are only liquids, some are a combo. My surgeon had me on a two week liquid diet. Just follow what your surgical team recommends and you will be fine.

    Protein Sample Menu

You may be lactose intolerant have you tried any non-dairy based Protein shakes? Jay Robb makes egg based protein shakes and Syntrax nectar makes fruit flavored diary free shakes as well.

    Post-op Mexico?

I spoke to my primary care physician before surgery and he agreed to meet with me every month for 6 months just to make sure I was doing ok after surgery. He can't help me with the actually surgery stuff but nutrition and blood work he can. If I had questions about my surgery or nutrition, I have email addresses for my surgeon and nutritionist and I can email them. From what I've read on here if you go through BP, the have follow ups with the nutritionist in their surgery packages. It never hurts to ask your doctor, the worst they can say is no.
