    Deciding the Band

Wow I didn't realize any surgeons still recommend the band anymore. Please see another surgeon for a second opinion and do a lot of research. Most of the of stories are negative about band.
  3. Fair life milk has less sugar and more protein. In all honesty all Shakes made me at least a little sick. I was able to tolerate Isopure but I can't say I liked it.
  4. I wasn't allowed to even try rice until cleared for full foods. I think that wasn't until 6 weeks out. It had to be brown rice. But same as @@LipstickLady it doesn't agree with me at all. At 6 months out I avoid it like the plague!

    Lactose?

@@UsernameTaken it certainly could be something else so speak with your doctor/NUT first get their opinion. I was already using lactaid pills and my doctor said they were totally safe (they are just an enzyme your stomach use to make on its own). But I did have issues with other foods after surgery. Some shakes still made me sick after surgery even though they were lactose free so it wasn't the lactose. Your stomach is so sensitive after this kind of trauma. I also tolerated fair life milk better than lactaid milk. Milk in general has lots of natural sugar. Lactose and galactose. I couldn't tolerate sugar well in any form. I think had dumping early on. But I don't have it 6 months out. Some people have issues with spicey foods, acidic foods, raw veggies. Always best to talk with your medical team.

New member here - surgery this Monday

First best of luck on Monday! I had a smooth recovery and wish the same for you. My experience is the first 6 weeks sticking to the program is easy. Much much easier than the pre op diet. Eventually your surgeon will approve you eat all foods (or at least try them). But just because you are capable of eating some high carb low nutrition piece crap doesn't mean you should. Use that first six weeks to detox from carbs and really embrace high protein clean eating. Find some high protein foods you really love. I have had some slips and that is going to happen but you can't let derail your progress. You got this!

    Lactose?

I have been lactose intolerant for 30 years and your symptoms do sound like lactose intolerance. Call your doc or NUT and if they agree ask if you can take lactaid (Walmart has a cheap generic). There are chewables and crushing the regular pills into your food doesn't taste bad either. You might want to try lactaid or fair life milk. Also there are many lactose free shakes out there. Isopure and total lean from GNC are what I used. Good luck!
  8. If it makes you feel better Lite Greek yogurt was allowed by my surgical team during the full liquid stage which was less than a week post op. I am alive and well. It might be worth giving them a call because they might say it is ok. Either way reach out to your NUT there are tasty protein shakes out there. GNC total lean and Isopure (also at GNC) got me through. Syntrax nectar from Amazon is good too.
  9. Almost 8 months! Insurance only required 6 but one of the surgeons left and caused a backlog!

Why do people bash weight loss surgery?

Counterpoint observation here ... I have good friends, family members, and acquaintances at all walks of life. And, interestingly, I've observed that my very well educated colleagues, friends and acquaintances are not all that supportive of WLS. Yes, they tend to be fitter, healthier and slimmer -- but very few of them have ever suffered from obesity themselves. Consequently, they are ignorant about the disease of obesity and confused by and/or scornful of those who are obese. In fact, the things that some of my best friends have said *to my face* about others who are obese (as if I weren't obese at the time) have just flabbergasted the s**t out of me! Here's one zinger: "The woman he married is 100 pounds overweight, so it you know HAS to be her money!" And this was said in a circle of my best friends when I was -- ahem! -- exactly 100 pounds overweight. WTF?! Nonetheless, they have all been enthusiastically supportive of my weight loss and weight maintenance efforts over the last few years. They have no idea I had WLS, and I think they would shocked to learn that I had. As to my poorer, less well educated friends, family members, and acquaintances -- their attitudes toward WLS seem all over the board. Yes, more of those folks are heavy, given that poverty and lack of education are correlated with obesity, and that the cause-effect interactions among those conditions are very complex. But as a group, this cohort of folks I know seem less biased against weight loss surgery than my well educated, rich, slim friends. For one thing, they would love to have a way to fight their own obesity. But, frankly, I think they're just not as judgmental or critical of people as the upper-class crowd is. [/quote Lesson here we shouldn't stereotype people. Regardless of the reason particular person is ignorant or judgemental of WLS we can agree it is frustrating and annoying!

Why do people bash weight loss surgery?

I never considered socioeconomic as a factor in excepting WLS but when looking at my own experience it certainly supports this premise. I told my 3 BFFs and husband all with bachelors and Masters. All supportive. Now my family is largely uneducated, poor and many are obese. And the thought of telling them makes me cringe so I haven't, not even my parents. I tried to tell my mom and she, oh you have more will power than that. End of conversation! She loves the new healthy me and she right, I do have will power to do what is best for me and my health.

Science: How reporters get it wrong

    Hilarious!!!
  15. Nothing too crazy.... Bun less burger with no fries. This is a place the customizes burgers. Lettuce is a bun option but that causes more issues than bread for me. So the order didnt faze her. However only eating half the burger confused her a bit.
  16. Yes. They actually do work! I've used it before. This is the link for the wraps I used... http://www.myitworks.com/shop/product/111/ Dawnie_doo I have tried them and they do give temporary tightening. It doesn't last long and they are expensive. But helped me look better in a dress I had to wear for a wedding. This pre op when I was pretty heavy.
  17. @@KindaFamiliar so how is it going with the arse cream experiment?
  18. This is a family friendly site ( for the most part) so I won't be posting pics here....better get that new website up and running! LOL!
  19. Weight loss has helped me and so has cutting back on caffeine. Awesome NSV!
  20. Awesome thread! @@KindaFamiliar you look great. You are an inspiration! Btw your new chin masks the turkey neck..... I can't even tell. If the arse cream works.... I have few places I am going to try it!
  21. I had surgery 12/14/15. I am doing great and the weight is coming off but I attribute that to following my post surgery diet. One of my goals it to be 'fit'. I am failing at that goal. I am a beginner and have some limitations because of my knees, like avoiding high impact aerobics. But most exercise can be made low impact easily and elliptical is very comfortable. I really need weight bearing exercise to build muscle . So the question is what are favorite exercise videos and why. Do you use Amazon prime or you tube for free stuff? Any one tried daily burn subscription or the beach body subscription? In particular has anyone tried hammer and chisel, 30 day shred? If you felt any DVDs you have spent good money on we're huge disappointment or waste of money .... That is welcome info too! Thanks in advance!

    Coffee

I am 4 months post op and can't tolerate it. I was allowed to try at about a month out and try few sips every weekend and it makes my belly feel awful. I miss it [emoji26]
  23. I can only give you my experience and of course follow your doctors plan. I had acid reflux that could have been managed by diet if I had just a little will power. I had issues of portion control and sometimes making bad food choices. I wasn't addicted to food general and rarely had issues with binge eating. Two things I was addicted to were coffee and Diet Coke. I don't tolerate either now.... But I never had any business drinking them in the first place.... They were the number one cause of my reflux. Other than being over joyed by weight loss I am so happy that having that surgery helped me kick these habits. I weened myself off slowly before surgery since I remember how horrible It felt going cold turkey felt during my pregnancies. A headache for two weeks. I don't miss carbonation..... I said I loved the bubbles before but it was a caffeine addiction pure and simple. In other words I don't tolerate carbonation. I love love love buffalo wings. They are my favorite food. I have them a couple times a month starting at about 3 months out. I can eat about two. Now spicy food can cause reflux so I have several hours before it is time to sleep and take a PPI (needed that before surgery too). My tolerance to spicy is exactly the same as before surgery and limit eating it only because of my pre existing reflux. Reflux and sleeve discussions are numerous so for the record my reflux improved with surgery because I make better food and drink choices. I know that is not the case with everyone.
  24. I am following as well.... I am a sleever but perhaps they deserve a name too!
