  1. So my sleep study went too well. Well enough that I don't have sleep apnea. Now I have an apt at the beginning of the new year with the surgeon to see if we can apply to my insurance with the osteoarthritis only. Crossing my fingers so we can. Already paid for the filing of the psych eval plus two consults with the behavior therapist. $190 down.

To Tell or Not to Tell?

My BMI is 35 And Im just starting the process. My husband knows that I've struggled with my weight so it was hard for me to tell him that I wanted this specially when I don't look my weight (exactly the words of the psych on the evaluation consult) But he is supportive. I asked him again last night while I was doing the in home sleep study and he again said yes. So it really depends on the relationship and how you two interact as a couple.
  3. Mu husband is the one that is nervous I'm actually doing ok. I guess because he's nervous I'm trying to stay calm? Don't know. Got my psych eval appt for thu. I think is because this is moving so 'fast' he is concern. It's not fast at all but since he is not the one that has been doing the research for so long and I only talked to him about it about w month or so ago maybe it would seem fast for him
  4. My medical And nutrition background is what has led me to comment here. Yes, I haven't had the experience and this forum this is not where you want to rely on to make decisions. Always consult with your physician, nutritionist and if you have one a psychologist. We are here to give our own opinions, and share what we 'know' but by all means at least when I write I do not mean it for anyone to take it by its word. I can only share what other patients have share with me and their experience. Agreed: people that are not successful with WLS are usually the ones that do not make the dietary and behavior changes. High caloric intake is what leads us to gain weight. WLS is just a tool like you make up brush is. Ultimately you are the one putting on the make up, how much and what you put on are your decision. Keep up the good work and if in any doubt I'm sure your team will always be glad to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
  5. I haven't had the surgery but the 'reason' for the sleeve and the diminished appetite is because hunger receptors are in the wall of the stomach so if you take 80% of the stomach out the 'physical hunger' is very low - some people report having to 'force' themselves to eat since they don't feel hunger. You can experience 'mental' hunger and that is when you want to eat a burger and fries with a Coke and you down two bites and feel full or even sick since it's not something your new stomach can handle. I have even heard patients said: if you think you will tell your sleeve what and how much to eat you'll be wrong because you WILL get sick! Don't know from experience just from some medical knowledge and feedback from actual WLS patients.
  6. I met my surgeon and waiting for approval of a sleep study and other tests. Don't know when my surgery will be. It may be March or April since I have to travel end of February. I wish I had started this process earlier so I'd have this done way before my trip. Oh well. Everything happens for a reason so I'll go with that

Thank you all for the input. Called my insurance today. Requirements: BMI, nutrition counseling (no specific duration of time), and psych eval. Copay of $250 and if I pre-cert my hospital stay (calling them to let know when my surgery is) I don't have to pay the $300 copay for hospital. Hoping my surgeon clears me soon so I can get this done. And for a sum of $250 plus any other copays for exams etc, oh I would have done this a long time ago!

To Tell or Not to Tell?

I don't have a date or even approval from insurance yet. I just met with my doctor last week. It's going to be a long process but the only person that will know is my husband. Im not telling anyone either. I have many friends whom have had this surgery and they don't tell. Some do some I know because I've known them for years and the were never thin so now they are like 110 pounds.

I have BCBSIL and I saw my surgeon last week. They need me to do an at home sleep study since I haven't been diagnosed with sleep apnea but I do have it. Will I have to wait too for 6 months of nutrition before I can get approval?

It really depends on coverage. Your best odds are to call the customer service number on back of the card give them your policy number and what procedure you are having. They will be able to give you the exact co-pay you will have.
