BabyNewYear got a reaction from BestDayEver in Just had surgery 12 days ago - already getting mixed reviews/comments from family and friends. HELP!
First off, congrats on your surgery! Hope you are feeling well and healing comfortably. Its difficult when your family is not as supportive as you would like them to be. My husband does not really want me to have the surgery but he is going along with it because he knows its important to me. My Mother and brother are in the same camp as my hubby but there's no other way I feel I can lose weight successfully and keep it off. God knows I've tried.
As far as telling people about my surgery my immediate family knows and I'll happily chat with the health professionals at the Lab or Dr's office about it. I'm not gonna shout it from the rooftops but if someone asks me how I've lost weight I will be honest. I think doing this takes a lot of courage. I have an extended family member who the rest of the family has speculated had bariatric surgery because of a drastic weight loss and she hasn't admitted to it. We all think its kinda silly but ultimately its her business who she tells. Although it seems pretty obvious to us what has happened.
What people seem to not get is that this is a health issue not a vanity one. If we were not dangerously overweight we could not be eligible to get this surgery in the first place. Obesity is not a moral failing it is a disease; one perpetuated by a food industry that puts profits before people and the production of healthful food products.
Good luck to you and hopefully you can educate your family as you move though this process. I know I am sure gonna try

    Hi guys,
I was just curious if anyone has had any complications from any of their pre-op tests? I had my sleep study, endoscopy, saw my pulmonary dr. some lab work done but now I have to have a stress test done and an echo done, because of my weight, I get out of breath easy and I'm worried about not doing good on the stress test, I guess my mind is playing tricks on me, did anyone have any issues with their stress test or echo, I just don't want anything to get in the way of my surgery after coming this far. Thanks everyone.

I see you posted in the bypass thread I was a sleeve patient but none the less surgery is surgery. I was very selective in who I told because of fear of the negativity. However your husband needs to realize that life changing permanent alterations to your body is by no means an easy way out. Like many others have said it is a tool to aid you in making the changes needed to gain health. Having the sleeve done has been the hardest thing I've ever done in my life but at 9 weeks out and 44 pounds down I am feeling better then I have in a long time. I have three children myself and I was open and honest with them about my choice and that I needed the extra help to lose the weight and they have been so supportive and encouraging as they are seeing the changes in me. I hope all the best for you and hope that you get the family support that you need.

    Hello Everybody!
My surgery date is 1/6/2016. I am suffering on Opifast through the holidays right now with my pre-surgery diet. It bloats me, gives me a headache and leaves me pining for the most modest of real foods.
Its been a long road to get here though so not giving up now. It took me longer than the insurance company's mandated six months to get through all the medical clearances. After that, I needed thyroid surgery which pushed me back again. So finally in 2016 it going to happen. New year- new me!
My family knows I'm doing it but not too many others. At this point its kind of a "need to know", basis, lol. I'm going to tell people later though. My aunt had the gastic bypass and she swears it saved her life. She encouraged me to have this surgery and I hope I can be as successful as she has been

Anyone else experience lack of energy on the pre-op liquid diet? This is day 2 and I am so tired. I've been taking a multi Vitamin since we are lacking nutrients. But my goodness I thought I had low energy before.

If your pain medication is not working after surgery, please ask your nurse to contact the surgeon to increase the dose or try something different. Nurses are used to working with what they have, and sometimes forget that a simple phone call can make a huge difference in a patient's experience.

I'm new to Bariatric Pal too and I'm in Georgia. I'd love to buddy up with you, and maybe we can get somebody to take us on as our mentor too! I'm scheduled for sleeve surgery on Jan 5, so I've started my 2-week pre-op diet. You're just a few weeks ahead of me in the process, so you can inspire me!
So how did your surgery go? Are you feeling OK? Do you have a good support system - family or friends who are going through this journey with you? And how are you liking that liquid diet?!
Hope you're doing well with it all. Looking forward to talking with you.

Have you considered working with a therapist to develop strategies to deal with the stressors? We all are probably guilty of using food for purposes other than nutrition, but we need to develop other ways of rewarding ourselves and comforting ourselves other than with food. Love Miss Mac's Ben Franklin Quote - so to the point. Working on some new hobbies and exercise are some ideas that I am looking into in order to get my head out of the fridge, lol.
Remember the Serenity Prayer, too, it applies here.... Good Luck and hang in there

I am blessed to have a family that is 100% supportive, but if the situation was opposite, I would dig my heels in and refuse to discuss my health with any of them and be around them as little as possible. If I had saboteurs in the house, I would just have to focus and walk away from their dietary mess. I feel for you - just don't give away your power. Hugs from Chicago.
