    Post-op diet questions

I'm currently on full liquids for 2 weeks post op. I have protein shakes, broth, tomato soup, jello... Yesterday I ate a sugar free chocolate pudding cup added a spoonful of unflavored protein powder and thinned it down some with my chocolate protein shake. It tasted like heaven.

    Length of hospital stay?

I stayed 1 night. Was released 24 hours after my surgery.
  4. Day 3 post op. Lost of gas in my chest. Doing well on water and protein. Tummy is sore, especially around the larger incision

Day 3 is my least favorite so far. Gas pain is terrible. Left side where large incision is sore and I'm EXHAUSTED! Just took a 3 hour nap!

Day 3 is generally the hardest day. It is the day when all of the anesthesia is out of your system and your body is fully "awake" and feeling everything. So, it's all downhill from there! Baby steps, Friend. You are just out of the gate beginning your WLS journey. Be kind to yourself. It's not a race. It's a life changing experience---make it a joyful one. :)

How are you getting protein? I am 3 days post op and can barely keep water down. I'm so nauseous, I'm afraid to try anything else.Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App Premier Protein banana and caramel drinks. They are still so tasty and 1 box has 30grams of protein in it.

2 days post op (surgery on 27th).. My bowels are soooo gurgly and talking non stop. Hopefully something comes from all the noises? I'm able to get my protein and water in OK. Large incision is really tender and kind of concave and weird looking. Made the mistake of taking too large a drink today, instantly felt it in my chest- freaked me out.

  9. Day 1 post op wasn't as easy as day of. Have been quesy and thrown up a little water twice. Throwing up freaking hurts. Got no sleep last night, but took a 3 hour nap when I got discharged this afternoon. Hoping the nap will help.
  10. Day 1 post op. Hoping it goes as well or better than yesterday

It should get better each day. Stay on those liquids.....it is the most important thing outside of walking. You will be better in no time.

90% probability it will be much better by the end of the week. Its still scary for most the first week. Just get a shot glass to keep you from gulping. Stay hydrated. Realize you are going to have some pooping issues. Don't jump on the scale right away. In about three weeks you will find a "new normal." My "new" is fantastic. Just saying.

Thanks for the words of encouragement! This morning started off rough with some nausea and throwing up water but I took a 3 hour nap as soon as I got discharged home and that seems to really have helped. I'm almost at 30grams of protein today and around 40oz of water. Keeping my eye on the prize :)

  11. I also had surgery this afternoon. I was a ball of nerves, but surgery went well. Was in serious pain the first hour post op but since then it really hasn't been bad at all. I've been able to drink about 10oz of water and a small bottle of Isopure which has shocked me. Getting my bladder to relax was a project, but I was determined as I did NOT want a catheter. Now if only I could get some freaking sleep in this place. First day of my "new" life!!!!

Surgery went well! Pain has been tolerable and knock on wood I've had no issues with nausea and taking fluids like a champ.

Thanks for the update, glad to hear it. Welcome to the other side. Get a shot glass and learn to sip water all the time. If you can get some protein in you will be much more energetic. Ummm, you probably won't poop for a while, might freak you out (it did me) but things get back to normal in a couple of weeks. Respect the sleeve.

  13. Tomorrow at 12:30 for me. I wish I wasn't nervous. My stomach is in knots right now.
  14. Mine is tomorrow! It really hit me when I was leaving work today, there may have been a few nervous tears shed on the drive home...

    Why different pre-op diets?

my doctor just requires 2 weeks of low carb. 1/2 cup of fruit for Breakfast, 4oz of meat and veggies for lunch and dinner. And I have to drink 2 Impact drinks a day. As mentioned above, each doctor and program is different.
  16. 24 hours!!! holy crap

Sending positive thoughts your way today! The first day of the rest of your life :-)
  19. Pre-Op apt with surgeon went well this morning. Helped put my mind at ease some... ready for Wednesday!

Of course: confirmed if he requires a catheter (no!). Asked about blood thinners or compression socks once I return home (hospital only), confirmed I can still take my normal meds the night before, asked at what point during pre op I would start getting the happy / relax drugs (not until I'm making the trek to the OR). Confirmed I will receive a abdominal binder ( this was based off all the positive things I've read on here, he said not everyone wants or needs them but they do have them so just ask the nurse). And then I asked about returning to different activities such as sex, he said let your body be the judge based on how I'm feeling.

I'm with you! I'm excited by soooo nervous! I made a word cloud today and taped it to my bathroom mirror as a daily reminder of why I'm doing this.

    Omaha, Nebraska?

Had my pre-op physical yesterday and everything is good to go! Had the pre surgery class today at Methodist West. Was surprised when the nurse said Dr. Cronk doesn't always do a swallow test with the sleeve. Did you do a swallow test? Said I'll be eating ice chips and drinking water as soon as I'm awake, which also surprised me, as I was expecting to have to wait a while based on everything I've read on here.
