Allow me to introduce to those of you who are not familiar with, what I consider to be, the gold standards of weight loss surgery success habits. These are success habits developed by people way smarter than me who have defined the keys to achieving permanent weight loss with bariatric surgery.

I feel these must be read and memorized by every bariatric surgery patient. My trinity of owner’s manuals for the bariatric surgery are:
The Bariatric Diet developed by Dr. E. E. Mason (the father of obesity surgery)
The Pouch Rules for Dummies adopted from Dr. E. E. Mason
The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients by Colleen Cook, based on research with patients successful with bariatric surgery

Here is a high-level of the success habits found in each text. You’ll need to read the full texts in order to reap the benefit. Just click through the links above.

    The Bariatric Diet
The following is the gist of the bariatric diet developed by Dr. Edward E. Mason. Dr. Mason is an Iowa bariatric surgeon who is considered the “father of obesity surgery” and the bariatric diet is the gold standard for weight loss surgery patients to follow. The ideal meal for weight loss is:

    • Fill one-half of your plate with two to four ounces of animal source, low-fat Protein.< /span>
    • Fill one-quarter of your plate with lightly-cooked or raw low starch vegetables.
    • Fill the remaining quarter of your plate with fresh raw fruit.< /span> These food choices are coarse, solid foods that should be cut finely and chewed well in order to be tolerated. They are likely to stay in the pouch longer and offer good nutritional value. Read How Does the Bariatric Diet Work for further details.

    The Pouch Rules
The following is an overview of the pouch rules developed by Dr. Edward E. Mason. Read The Pouch Rules for Dummies for the complete instructions.

    • Eat solid foods. Take very small bites of low-fat meats, crisp or raw vegetables, and solid fruits like apples or pears.
    • Eat at least two ounces of meat with each meal.
    • Try to finish your meal within 15 to 20 minutes. Make sure you still chew your food thoroughly. Don’t rush through the meal, but don’t linger at the table either.
    • Avoid drinking with meals and for two hours afterwards.
    • Start drinking when the feelings of hunger return to avoid thirst and minimize hunger between meals. Start with smaller sips, and increase the volume until you feel full again.
    • Drink 8 to 12 ounces of Water rapidly over 20 seconds, then top off with sips until you feel comfortably full. Do this whenever you feel hungry. This will keep the pouch distended and minimize hunger.
    • Drink a full glass of water 15 minutes prior to eating. By drinking a lot of water before the meal, you shouldn’t need to drink during the meal or afterward.
    • Avoid snacking since Snacks usually do not eliminate hunger. They also are filled with empty calories.
    • Minimize caloric liquids and softer foods. These foods are not off limits, but when you make exceptions you will likely get hungry sooner and have to deal with the consequences. The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients
Colleen Cook had gastric bypass surgery in 1995 and went on to author the The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients. It is based on research conducted with patients who have been successful with bariatric surgery. I have found that I maintain my weight loss when I follow the success habits. When I slip up and stop using the habits, I gain weight fairly quickly. And I take off that weight when I return to the Success Principals:
Success principal #1: Personal accountability (this is fundamental – you must “get” this principal before you can work the other principals into your new life)
    Success principal #2: Portion control
    Success principal #3: Nutrition
    Success principal #4: Fluid intake
    Success principal #5: Regular exercise
Success principal #6: Vitamins and supplements

I find the chapter “Back on Track” particularly helpful. It’s for weight loss surgery patients who have regained weight. Colleen Cook shares an approach that has helped many patients turn it around, get back on track, lose the weight and keep it off by following these principals.

Weight-loss surgery is a big part of the solution, but it is not a cure-all. If you follow these success habits you will increase the amount of weight you lose as well as ensure a healthy weight for the rest of your life.

    Living larger than ever,
    My Bariatric Life

Hang in there, stalls are very common.
Maybe journal your food, Water, Protein and exercise to see if you are following your post WLS plan.
I asked my doctor about quickly losing 10 pounds of ugly fat, they recommended cutting off my head -I need to find a new doctor.

What's wrong with "ok"? Don't forget, your Dr. sees this everyday and he's ok with what you did. YOU are the one to be blown away with what you did. YOU know how monumental it is for YOU. You got his approval with ok. Let that be enough to get from him (or her). Trust me; more comments will be coming from more people. And that's great. But YOU are the only one who knows how truly monumental it is for YOU!! Congratulations on an amazing start!!!

@MinaDina. THANK YOU! You are so right. I guess I am one who seeks the approval of others, and I need to quit doing that! My husband reminded me that my doctor, while good, is not Mr. Personality, and an "ok" from him is probably as good as it gets. Either way, you are right. I have a lot to be proud of! Thanks for putting this in perspective for me.
As for you.... 1 week to go! I know you're excited. I was anxious, nervous, and excited before my bypass! I wish you well. Please let me know how your surgery goes.

Not a sleeve girl but I originally wanted one. I ended up with bypass because I had severe gerd and it was a better option for me personally.
No regret ever, not for one second. I have a whole new life where food does not revolve around it. Don't get me wrong, I love food. I choose to really savor every morsel and I don't eat crap anymore because it actually tastes gross.
pizza, oh yes. I do eat a lovely thin crust piece of pizza about once a month and I love that I can and I love that I am satisfied with that one piece.
No regrets other than regretting I did not do it sooner. Live is full again!

healthier&happier4life reacted to Djmohr in Anyone else weary of advice from pre op or 3 months out?
I am nearly 2 years post op and I am still here almost every day. I am at goal since March of this year. The road to getting to goal was so much easier than maintaining it in my opinion. Mostly because watching that scale move provided me with more incentive to keep forging forward.
That being said, I am beginning to learn new ways to remain motivating to keep my weight where it is. For the next year at least it will be gifting myself plastics along the way. If I maintain, I get to have work done.
In terms of advice given out by folks that have yet to experience WLS or are just a few months out. You have to take it with a grain of salt. We were all there once and as for me, I focused only on what my medical team provided and then assessed what I read on line. I asked lots of questions, and shared my learnings.
For me the one thing that frustrates me like crazy is when some newly post op is looking for permission to do exactly what they shouldn't and another newbie gives them permission. It isn't helping anyone and in fact a bit of tough love can shake you into reality. It is my biggest pet peeve and about the only thing I will get seriously peeved about.
If you are looking for permission to do something you know you shouldn't do or if you are the one handing out the permission you can be assured I won't keep my mouth shut. It isn't doing anyone any good and let's be honest we don't need to be coddled, we need to be told the straight skinny.
Someone asked me about whether or not Brachioplasty is painful. If you read all the BS from the docs on real self, they will tell you that their is discomfort and you will be back to work in a week or less. They don't tell you it hurts like you just slammed both your arms on a hot stove and held it there for about an hour. They burn like hell. They don't tell you that as soon as you do any activity the swelling increases and you can feel your arms bulge and they don't tell you that there is a ton of itching or tickling in your arms as the nerves begin to heal. Guess what, ask me and I will tell you what I know based on my experiences.....you will get the real deal whether you like it or not. I say this as I sit here with two ice packs tucked under each arm pit almost all day long for the last 12 days. LOL!

Hi guys!!! My name is Lisa. I'm new to this whole process! I had my initial consult 7/13, and my first nutritional consult 7/22. I have excellUs BCBS NY. A bit about myself...I am 31, my BMI is 35.4! I have had diabetes and hypertension for 21 years. I had a heart attack 6 years ago at age 25. I also have high cholesterol, PCOS, metabolic syndrome and GERD. I need the roux en y for these medical ailments as well as weight loss! I work in thr operating room and participate in these procedures weekly! I love it and it doesn't scare me at all (thank goodness). I spoke with the surgeon who says im pretty much a shoe in as long as my BMI is 35! All my doctors have written letters of support and my previous PCP wrote a diet history attempts at weight loss letter...spoke to the surgical coordinator at work and she says I won't need to do the monitored weight loss and could potentially have surgery in October! Holy smokes!!!! Anyone have a similar experience??? This all seems to be happening soooooo fast!!! I see the surgeon officially on August 10th! Any helpful hints???
