  1. @@2goldengirl I didn't even give thought to the fact that people are booking appointments near the end of the year to beat the new deductibles for Jan. 1 or that patients are taking off out of the gate to get their clearance for surgery at the beginning of the year. I don't know why I didn't even think to consider this beforehand but I totally understand. That is awesome that you are able to use your doc for your colonoscopy! I hate having a higher deductible to meet now but I can't let that stop me from accomplishing my goals. I hope that everyone who wants to have surgery gets it. After scheduling all of my appointments something told me to call the staff back at the surgeon's office and speak to them about the timeline to have these tests completed and I am glad that I did. I found out that right after I take my mandatory NUT class they will be looking for clearance from the psychologist first to submit for approval even before I get clearance from the cardiologist and pulmonologist. Thinking about it things will start moving pretty quickly after that. I am just trying to prepare for it in terms of food. I'm scared half to death because having PCOS I am sensitive to everything so I need to figure out what I will be eating post op. I also take two meds for hypertension along with metformin and they tend to drop my blood sugar pretty low so I am wondering how this will work in conjunction with doing a pre-op diet. This whole process is both exciting and a little stressful all the same.
  2. Thank you @InnerSurferGirl! I was sitting here making to much out of this part of it. I am pretty confident that everything will be just fine. I've been wanting this surgery for so long I just want everything to go smoothly without any hiccups along the way and this was one of the areas where I just wasn't sure what to expect going in. This puts me at ease. I appreciate your response.
  3. I'm feeling hopeful! My consultation went well and he says that I am a good candidate for any of the surgeries but I am choosing VSG. Today is definitely a good day and I hope that your day is too. :-)

@ZetaStar I have to say congratulations to you as well because if you are waiting on your approval that means that you have gone through all of your testing. That is wonderful news!!! I still have two more test to take but what I thought would be the hardest of my appointments which actually wasn't is behind me now and I am so glad. I can't wait until we reach that loser's bench. It will be bitter sweet. Hope that your Sunday was good.

Congratulations @@nikki1980! This is just one of the reasons that I am looking to have the WLS. This gives me hope that I too cant beat PCOS and regain some normalcy to my life. I know just how you feel. The same old lose some weight advice and throwing pills at me was the same routine that I have experienced. I am so happy for you because you are free from the grips of it totally ruling over your entire life. @@Pinkgirl1234 keep fighting. You are not alone. You will get past this!

    Serious Decison To Make

@@ZetaStar my husband was taken off of insulin and started back on the pills. I know exactly what you are experiencing because my husband has everything you mentioned and including fatty liver disease, and non-alcoholic pancreatitis the neuropathy is the worst of it all. He wakes up in the middle of the night in lots of pain and sometimes can't get back to sleep for hours. He now works out 5 times a week during his lunch at the company gym and has lost over 100 lbs. If there is a possibility that going with the sleeve won't resolve these issues I would think long and hard before making your choice. I am sure that you will make the best decision for you. I am happy that you found the website. I stumbled upon it too.

    Serious Decison To Make

Hello and welcome @@ZetaStar! I am at the beginning of my journey as well and it looks like you have some pretty good advice from those who have gone before us and have already had their WLS. It is a tough decision to make but ultimately the decision is up to you. Your surgeon will make the best recommendation that they feel will help you in the long run but you still have a choice. I will also say that so far from what I have been reading on this forum it appears that none of these surgeries come without a lack of Vitamin deficiency, dehydration, and malnutrition. No matter what you choose there is a likelihood of experiencing some or all of these side affects. Keep in mind that there are risks associated with any of these surgeries but chances are greater that your surgery will be a successful one. As far as your reflux here is what the surgeon at my information session explained to us. If you tell him during your consult that you have acid reflux he won't do the sleeve period because it will only make your symptoms worse. My husband has GERD and is a type II diabetic, with hypertension and what I witness him go through I couldn't imagine how much worse it could get. Listen to your doctor and if you are still feeling differently consult with another surgeon to see what their thoughts are. Finally asks as many questions as possible and do some more research before making your decision. I am wishing you the very best. please keep us posted.
  11. Consultation Scheduled! I'm relieved that I finally get to meet with the surgeon but just a little sad that I have to wait until after the new year. I guess that maybe I should be looking at this on a more positive note. This gives me time to deal with preparing getting into a exercise routine and sticking to it, taking a deeper look at what I am eating and how it affects my health, and getting my head in the game mentally for the ride that I am about to take. I already know that I meet the criteria for having the surgery so I am not worried about the process of being approved. God has brought me too far to fail me now. I'm exited, I'm anxious to get started, and I am ready to say good bye to the old me and hello to the new Diva that I know I can be. I'm crying tears of joy because I am finally starting to see the light at the end of a long tunnel. I wouldn't wish being overweight on my worst enemy. Through it all God is good!

Thank you ladies! I have much work to do but I am so ready. @jane13 I totally forgot about the caffeine because I am a once a day coffee drinker at breakfast. I guess I will have to eliminate the coffee now and I enjoy tea lots of it! I get loose bags of herbal leaves from Mountain Rose Herb which is 100% Organic and combine them to make my own custom blend teas. I usually get Neem, Catnip, Spearmint, Nettle, Yarrow, Motherwort, Hibiscus, and quite a few more loose leaf teas. A lot of what I named also help with my symptoms of PCOS which is why I originally started getting them. I suppose that I will have to get educated on whether they contain caffeine or not but I am assuming that they all do.

@dhrguru I have my head in the game but I have a lot of preparing to do to ensure that I succeed. I am just thanking God that my husband is on board to make some changes as well. He has type II diabetes but he works out 5 times a week and has already lost over 100 lbs. With his support and willingness to make some minor changes in diet I am sure that we will both reach our goals for a better more healthier lifestyle. You all keep me in your prayers and I will do the same for you.

    Preop pcos ttc

I know that this post is kind of old but I just wanted to take a moment to say congratulations to all of the new mommies here. I have read every post on this thread and see that I have very similar story to all of you. My husband and I have been together for 13 years and have been trying to get pregnant for over 10. It has been a bit of a rough journey for me. For the longest going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out why I wasn't having normal periods until my previous PCP recommended that I see a specialist. After doing months of research I suspected that what I have had all along was PCOS since I was a teenager. Before going to this specialist every other doctor would say you have amenorrhea, throw some pills at me and send me on my way. Meanwhile I continued to gain weight that was harder to lose. Each time I attempted to lose I would gain it all back and more. Finally walking in to the office to see the specialist after only a few minutes of my rambling she said you have PCOS. I tried infertility treatment that failed. I started working out even harder and to no avail I still could not get pregnant. I then said okay maybe doing the weight loss surgery would help but then my employer switched insurance companies and I wasn't eligible. Years later I am 39 and upon researching my husband's insurance I found that they do cover WLS so here I am beginning the process to have the surgery. I went to a information seminar the day before Thanksgiving and I should be hearing from the surgeon's office upon verification of my insurance to schedule a consultation some time this week. I am praying that things will work out and that I too can be a mommy as well. Seeing all of your posts here gives me hope. Congratulations again and God bless you all.

  18. I'm feeling hopeful. I attended a information session which is required before meeting with a surgeon for a consultation. I was surprised at the number of people who were in attendance just a day before Thanksgiving but it let me know just how much we are all seeking out much needed help. I am now waiting on a phone call upon verification of my insurance to meet with the surgeon. I wishing you all much success in your journey. Happy Holidays!

Djmohr that is the best news that I have heard all day! I am so happy for you because I know exactly what you were experiencing. My husband has type II diabetes, Gerd, high blood pressure, and before having is gall bladder removed he was diagnosed with non alcoholic fatty liver disease, and pancreatitis. He works out very hard 5 days a week and has lost over 100 lbs. on his own i discussed us both having the surgery but he has lost so much weight on his own that he wants to continue that way. On the other hand losing the weight on my own hasn't been as easy. I am a size 26 but I can remember when I was in a size 7. I can't wait to feel and look healthy Djmohr. Its just a dream for now but I am hoping to get there soon. I am so very happy for you. It warms my heart seeing people reach their goals and fell good about themselves. I am wishing you continued success!

Thank you @Djmohr really! I have been so busy dealing with my own issues that I haven't even given a thought to supporting him by letting him know just how proud I am of his accomplishments. I appreciate you for giving me that reminder to do it. It always helps to know that your spouse has your back and I want him to know that I definitely have his back because he has always had mine.

    PCP Visit To Discuss WLS

Thank you @ChelleBean! I had a long talk withy PCP on Monday along with my husband and although it turned into a grilling session to see what I had done more recently in terms of attempts to lose he agreed that WLS was the best option. This past Wednesday I attended a information session which is required before you can meet with the surgeon for a consultation. I should be hearing back from them on Monday after they verify that my insurance covers WLS. I will then have to take a 4 hour nutrition class that costs about $400 and take 3 tests before they can give me a surgery date. I'm excited and afraid at the same time.
  20. I finally decided to pay a visit to my PCP to discuss me having WLS. I am sooooo nervous! I have only been with this doctor a few years and although he is all about getting physically fit and being healthy I don't know what his thoughts are about having surgery. I started feeling unsure about this appointment and I thought about canceling. I thought that in order to prove my attempts at weight loss I would have to hunt down old medical records from previous doctors. I don't know why I did this but last night I came across a couple of boxes that have been in my closet for almost 3 years. Low and behold..... I found old receipts from LA Weight Loss that closed its doors four months after my husband paid for the program in full. I also found old food diaries, old appointments from a weight loss program that I attended back in 2004 when I first attempted to have the surgery, as well as old ER discharge papers from when I had complications due to my PCOS. This could have been nothing but God because I have not gone into this closet in quite some time. My appointment is within the next few days. I am wondering is there anything that I should mention to him or ask him about specifically in terms of discussing my wanting this surgery? I have PPO so I don't technically think that I even had to pay a visit to him but I chose to anyway. Any advice you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks In Advance.

    PCP Visit To Discuss WLS

Hi @@KarenLoh Thank you for that wonderful compliment. Yes I wouldn't have it any other way. I found some YouTube videos of my PCP talking about why he went into his field of practice and how he dedicated to helping his patients achieve optimal health fitness. He's stern, young, and funny, and he will call you on your crap if he feels that you aren't truly trying to get healthy. He is just what my husband and I need. I simply had to have him on board. He truly shows concern for the both of us. I know how you feel in terms of losing a good doctor. I'm still trying to recover from losing my GYN. She was the best doc ever. She knew all about PCOS and would also tell me about herbal medicine to treat my symptoms. She moved her practice closer to home and I miss her dearly. It sounds like you had quite a journey going through the process before your WLS. I am sure looking back that you can appreciate how far you've come. Congratulations my friend.

    PCP Visit To Discuss WLS

Thank you @FocusOnMeNow. Yes I am finding that which policy covers different procedures depends on a number of factors. If it is insurance through your employer they may elect to not pay for this kind service. My policy they cover bariatric surgery but they will not cover anything that involves treatments for infertility. As for the supervised diet they no longer require it for my particular policy but I have heard of PCP's supervising 6 month diets especially if ultimately a patient would need a letter of necessity from either the surgeon or the PCP. My policy states a reqiured letter of medical necessity from either. I'm so happy for you that you got through all of the testing in prep for your surgery a congratulations are in order to you. How far post-op are you? [emoji4]

    PCP Visit To Discuss WLS

@@animallover1247 I had that same worry and stress. I don't think that I had to really pay him a visit simply because with PPO you don't need a referral to see a surgeon but as stated earlier in this thread its good to have your PCP on board because well beyond surgery you ultimately have to at some point pay a visit to your PCP. I did it because I know how strongly he feels about me getting healthy and I wanted his opinion. If he had said that this is a bad idea I probably would have still pursued having WLS. No more worries my friend. Now the next step is this information session. I will keep you posted. [emoji4]
