  1. I have my thyroid tablet then wait 30 mins before drinking a protein shake. My doc says no liquids 5 mins before eating and 20 mins after eating. I find that my biggest struggle as I want to eat and drink at the same time. Sleeved Dec 1st 2015.
  2. I'm not sure how to read those labels. They are quite different to the labels in New Zealand. My guide for labels are less than 10 grams of fat and 10 grams of carbs per 100 grams and it's okay. As for the coffee aspect my dietician says coffee is fine if you are getting in enough fluids but not to add any chocolate or flavour shots. I often add a teaspoon of coffee to my vanilla Protein shake.

    After Surgery

From what I gather each surgeon is different. Some have drains some don't. I had 6 incisions, no drain and could have realistically gone back to work on day 4. I'm a teacher. I've had 2 caesareans and this was a walk in the park compared to that. For me, day 1 and 2 I slept a lot in hospital. Day 3 I had minimal pain relief and no energy problems. Day 4 I was off all pain meds and feeling pretty normal. Best of luck with your surgery.
  4. My surgery was Dec 1st. I'm doing really well, no gas pains or any pain at all. Mind you I was up and walking around an hour after my surgery. food wise I'm also streaks ahead of where I should be. I mixed up the Clear Liquids and full liquids weeks 1-4 and rang my surgeon in a bit of a panic when I realised what I'd done. He said it was fine and that I wasn't doing myself any harm and that if I was tolerating it well to just try foods out. I'm now eating pretty much whatever high Protein foods I want just chewing really well. Eg, last night at my cousins wedding I had hangi (food cooked in the ground) lamb, chicken and beef - although that sounds like a lot it was probably about 1/4 of a cup in total of meats. Hangi meat is super moist so not hard to swallow. I haven't had any vomiting episodes or feeling unwell. Liquids I'm finding I can now drink normally without pain or having to take small sips. Wound healing - I have 6 incisions and had two of those where stitches were sticking out - probably from sleeping on my side and stomach from day 1. The nurse trimmed those up for me and now they're all healed. Energy levels - aside from the first two days in hospital where I needed a lot of sleep due to the meds I have not noticed any change in my normal energy levels. Mind you I do inject myself with B12 every couple of months. Bowel movements - a real issue for me. I'm not that regular anyway pre surgery and since surgery (3 weeks) I've only had one bowel movement and that was with the help of suppositories!! I've tried benefibre, alpine tea and prune juice and nothing seems to help. Hoping things will sort themselves out. Have emailed the dietician to see what she suggests. I have an under active thyroid and a slow digestive system is one of my normal symptoms. Weight loss - it's coming off slowly but when I think I am now down 26 kg (approx 58lb) since I decided I wanted this surgery I'm more than happy with that result. Since surgery I've lost about 6kg, so the other 20kg I lost prior to surgery with my own dieting and exercise and a 2 week pre op diet.

    Any December Sleever's?

I disagree. I've been having capsules since day 2 of surgery. In fact while in hospital was given capsules by nurses.

    Any December Sleever's?

Lostlesa I am now 4 days post op. I bought chewable vitamins as well as capsules. I've had one chewable and it was disgusting! I take the capsules without any problems. The anti acid capsules are about the same size. If you are like me - don't waste your money on chewable vitamins. Get capsules.

    Any December Sleever's?

What a disappointment lizziebeth. Glad they can reschedule so soon though. All the best with the dreaded lurgy.

    Any December Sleever's?

Had my surgery today. All went well, up and walking around with manageable pain. Quite a bit of nausea though which I wasn't expecting. Have dozed on and off though out the day. Ice chips are my new best friend.

    Any December Sleever's?

I made it through a lot of gross shakes. Haha. Surgery tomorrow morning for me. Looking forward to a nice nap and some good meds. I've had a bunch of surgeries before so not bothered about the process. Keep on gagging it's worth it in the end.

    3 month follow up WIN

Congratulations on your weight losses. To the ladies in here who have lost loved ones my heart goes out to you. I actually teared up reading your stories (in part because I've got very high empathy for others, also I'm on day 10 of the pre-op diet!). This comment for me was particularly poignant "I know that the farther out you get the less you get to speak about your sweet boy." Please don't ever stop talking and sharing about your loved ones. Love and healing thoughts heading your way.

    Upcoming surgery

Call me crazy but I love the feeling of going under anaesthetic. It's super peaceful. For what it's worth before you go under they will give you anti anxiety meds. I've had about 12 general anaesthetics. Not one was a problem.

    Any December Sleever's?

December 1st, 2015 is my surgery date. Currently on the pre op diet and already gagging at the protein shakes. They're quite sweet and all I can taste is powder but I'm chugging them down.
  14. I was very fit, competitive roller skating (figures, dance and freestyle), racing bmx and playing field hockey. In my early twenties I was an ice skating coach and skated 7-10 hours a day 5 days a week. I could eat whatever I wanted for as long as I wanted because I was so active. After giving up coaching and moving to an office job after having a child I ate the same and the weight piled on. I also have an underactive thyroid and have been on meds since I was 18 years old. That coupled with an ankle injury (8 surgeries and another on the way) lead to even more weight gain. Like others here I was also sexually abused - by my grandfather, on my 13th birthday among other times. I dated several guys who have commented about my weight. The last one said to my face "You are too fat to ever be loved" - that was a catalyst for another 25kg weight gain. Ironically then I was only 20kg over weight. I haven't dated in the last 13 years as a way of protecting my already very fragile self esteem. I now have 50kg to lose. My surgery date is Dec 1st 2015. Currently on the pre op diet and gagging at the Protein shakes - too sweet, too powdery tasting but know it's for my benefit so sucking it up!
