Just an update. Had my surgery on the 19th Like many, I have some serious health problems. One of the main reasons I decided to have gastric bypass surgery was because of diabetes. Mine is so insulin resistant that just a couple of months ago I was taking a maximum dose of Victoza, 70 units of Lantus a day and over 100 units of Novalog. Although some of those doses were decreased before surgery because I lost weight, This week I had a major breakthrough.
Sunday afternoon - almost two weeks after surgery - I started having low blood sugars. Yesterday I saw the endocrinologist and my dose of Lantus has been cut to 8 per day and Novalog on a sliding scale. She told me that within the month I should be off all insulin and my diabetes will be in remission!
I just wanted to share that as a victory because only a few months ago I was on a much different path. This is something I could never have done on my own and will always be a motivation when times are rough. What an amazing surgery!

I have a cautionary tale for you, my fellow post-surgery mates…
Last night I was in a hurry to get to my son's football game. I warmed up my dinner, a kinda pita pocket hamburger (it was a "diet" food, low carbs/sugars, etc., frozen section of Kroger)… I was excited because I am now allowed regular foods and this was the one of the first "regular" things I've eaten in over 6 weeks.
So! I. ate. too. fast Just as I was sitting down to watch my son's game, I felt it… a pain in my lower chest… some of my dinner was stuck. I did not chew well, like I know that I am supposed to do. It was so awful. I broke out in cold sweats and, though I could breath, could not stop gagging. I had to go to the parking lot, hide between cars, and vomit my saliva (heard it referred to as "the foamies"). After about the third time, a small piece of food came out. The piece was not anything that I would have had a problem with pre surgery… honestly, it was tiny by normal standards. Even after I threw it up, I continued to vomit saliva, that I was unable to swallow, for about another 5 minutes.
Following advice I found online (yes, many others have experienced this horrible experience, apparently), I have been on liquids only for 24 hours. From what I have read, no long term ill effects can be expected, but inflammation is common.
I knew I needed to take small bites and chew, chew, chew, but I became over confident and rushed too damn much…I've learned my lesson, for now! Hopefully, my own little post-bariatric surgery nightmare will help you guys remember the rules and avoid such an unpleasant (and scary) situation in the future.

I would just like to share my newest NSV. I wore this dress to my best friends wedding last night. It may not seem like a big deal to some of you but I haven't worn a dress since I was 12. I wore it and I liked it!! I will be adding more to my wardrobe I blocked out the others for privacy. It was pretty exciting for me. At 267lbs I didn't look good in anything form fitting. It was a special night all around. It's the little things that mean so much!
Update: Picture of the back of it for the ladies interested in it.

True. What I'm trying to say is don't go in with the mindset of "I want to lose x amount, but statistically I'll probably only lose xx amount." Thats setting yourself up for only losing 65%! This game is mental more than anything and our minds can manifest outcomes!! Go in fully confident in yourself committed to doing what it takes to get to your goal weight.
I've seen many more people here achieving goal weight than not.

You are in the honeymoon. Later, you can eat more, you WANT to eat more, you get bored with limited food choices, old habits show their ugly head. You may get to goal, just keep up the good work. If not, sooner, than later you might... it took me 3 years. I have regained 18-22 pounds twice... getting it off the second time right now... at 12 pounds over goal and sill a success. You don't and can't know how it is to be 3-4 years out untill your there. You have done the right thing, just take it a day at a time, Protein first, don't drink with or right after meals.... cut the carbs at least some.... get some exercise and enjpy the ride. Don't give up, its for life.

So, it's 0457 and I have slept all I am going to sleep, still tired but way too wound up to go back to bed. Honestly I am shocked I got as much sleep as I did. So in a scant 6 hours I will be under the knife, closing one chapter of the book of life and opening a new one. Honestly, the last chapter was so full of heartache and sorrow, I do not miss seeing it go. I am now fixated on the future. WIsh me well.

mizzmaryk reacted to VSGAnn2014 in TIPS ON EATING SLOW
One of my biggest behavior changes post-op (13.5 months ago) is that I now eat so much slower and enjoy my food so much more than I did pre-op.
My husband used to remark in years past about how fast I'd eat. No longer. I take small bites, chew my food longer, and wait longer between bites.
I enjoy 4 ounces of wine most nights, and I now drink much slower, too (which means I don't drink as much as I used to drink). I savor the wine's nose, its multiple tastes, and the feel of the wine in my mouth.
As a result, food and wine have become so much more interesting to me. This has translated into a first-time-in-decades interest in cooking again, which means we're eating "cleaner" than we have in years.
Fast food eaten fast isn't enjoyed. And it isn't good for you (for many reasons).
In many ways, I think that pre-op I may have been trying to ignore food while eating too much of it too fast.
So slooooow down. Enjoy your food. Get acquainted with food again. It's OK to have a relationship with food. It's a healthy way to live.

I am on the 15th also. On my 3rd day of liquid diet. Today has been better. Not hungry, but I do want to eat solid food more out of habit, but at least I am not hungry. Have woke up with headaches past 2 mornings. I immediately grab a bottle of Water and Protein Drink and that sees to help.

Yeah, I've been weaning off coffee, but my NUT said it was ok in the pre-op diet if you are making an effort to reduce how much you drink. I'm thinking of going to Decaf (ugh, I know), since it's really just the taste and ritual I am craving. Good luck to you too!
