    October List of Surgery's

@Sleeveand RNYchica stalls are a part of the process. I am 8 weeks out from surgery and already stalled twice - the first time for 4 weeks and the second for a little over 2. Nevertheless, when I look at my total weight loss since surgery I cannot really complain. I have lost 20 lbs - that is an average of 2.5 lbs a week. Not bad.... in the scheme of things. Hang in there and keep following the plan - it works!
  2. Mine was booked for 2.5 hours also but took only about 90 minutes. I think they book the block of time in case they run into anything they weren't expecting.

    Happy One Year Anniversary

Great job on the weight loss so far and Happy Anniversary on your surgery! Keep at it and don't fall prey to impatience or discouragement and your body will probably resume its course soon. You look great and I know you must feel great. Again, congratulations!
  4. agree with @@Djmohr and understand that looking at the whole process at once can seem overwhelming. I read a lot of books on the surgery as I was doing my research and that helped me get used to the whole process thereby easing any anxiety I would have had. It is a big decision; If you feel you are not quite ready for things to proceed you can always postpone the surgery date. You can take some control of this and not have it control you. Good luck with your decision - have a great vacation (whether you are on the liquid diet or not -)

    Day 1 post op RNY

keep sipping your liquids and walk as much as you can. I am sure they sent you home with instructions (and hopefully pain meds) By day 3 I was off my pain meds and walking every hour or two for 5 minutes. They gave me little medicine cups that held 1 oz fluids and I believe I drank 5 or 6 of them an hour. On day 2 it was just broth or Water - day three they added 1 oz Protein per hour - then I progressed from there. If you were not given instructions call your office or NUT. Seems like I had 3 or 4 people give me materials (NUT, pre-op class, discharge nurse, and the nurse from my doctor's office) - Congrats on your surgery - the first week or so is rough because of the gas pains and not being able to get in much protein and water. You just have to keep working at it slowly and know that everything will work out.

    Hello!

I didn't tell many people before surgery. Before surgery I didn't want any negative comments about the surgery (because I had done my research and was positive this surgery was the best for me) and if I got one I pretty well avoided that person until after surgery. The one lady who was negative before surgery had had the surgery but has since regained all her weight. She came back to me a few weeks after surgery and apologized. She realized that the surgery hadn't worked for her because she had not made a commitment to the change in lifestyle that we all must make. I lost 30 lbs before surgery and since surgery have lost 20 more. It is really noticeable in my face more than anywhere else. I do have people ask me now and I tell them. I focus mainly on why I had the surgery - which was to get rid of my co-morbidities and to have a longer healthier life. People have understood that and we move on. Having this surgery was an important personal one for me and I won't let anyone take that good feeling about the decision away from me. Whether you tell others or not is totally up to you. I think, though, as you lose weight people are bound to recognize it and at least comment or ask about it. Thinking about how you are going to respond is probably a good idea.

    Bananas?

we can eat bananas, but I am not sure you would be able to eat enough of one along with the required protein to get enough potassium in. My husband had the same problem as you when he was taking chemo. He took a supplement for awhile but now drinks some Powerade Zero every day as it also has potassium in it. I know how painful those cramps can be and hope the issue gets resolved soon.

    Calories

I am 7 weeks out. My NUT wants me at 800 - 1000 calories. I can get in 800 on some days, but 600 is much easier. I try to add some veggies and a serving of fruit after my protein and that helps a little.
  9. I had a lot of trouble with Water for the first 5 weeks - it really hurt to even drink a sip of it. I drank a lot of low sodium broth the first couple of weeks and then started to drink Powerade zero for a couple of weeks. At my 4 week NUT appointment I was encouraged to try water again because of the sodium in broth and powerade zero - - and slowly I transitioned back to water (using Crystal Light a lot) - at 7 weeks I drink almost exclusively water and occasionally some Crystal Light. Hang in there and do what you have to - you definitely don't want to get dehydrated. Your pouch will most likely adjust as you heal and allow you to drink water again.
  10. yeah, I used the morphine pump a couple of times the day of surgery but nothing after that. Although I was sent home with pain meds I never took them. The only pain I remember was from gas and just had to work through that I do not imagine they would let you sit there without meds if you were to be in a lot of pain. You might have a doctor that will only give them if you request them - wouldn't hurt to double check.

    October List of Surgery's

I had my 6 week post-op appointment this past week. My surgeon is pleased with my progress. I can eat all foods now and can add weights to my exercising. I am in another stall and hope this one doesn't last as long as the last one. I am feeling well, though and get in my protein. water and vitamins as I am supposed to do. I forget sometimes that I am just 6 weeks out from surgery and overdo it. Our choir had their Christmas cantata this past Sunday and besides singing I played a few instruments - for two services. I hit the wall about half way through the second service and didn't think I would get through it - but I did. Went home and slept 4 hours! Hope everyone else is getting along better. Seems like it gets easier as every week passes.
  12. I think if you follow you NUT guidance you won't have any problems. You have done really well so far, and I don't see why you wouldn't continue to do so. Even though there is a so called 'honeymoon' period it doesn't mean that you will just stop losing weight when that period is over. Could you update your info? You ought to be showing off how much you have lost! Just go to top of page and put your mouse over 'patients' there is a place to click 'my patient info' (well, if you are on a computer lol) It is nice to see where people are in their journey. Breathe in, breathe out - and hang in there! And as someone else said - if your fears overwhelm you get some help.
  13. First of all, you lost an incredible amount of weight pre-surgery. Congratulations! Your body might just be trying to catch up with all that has happened to it. I stalled only one week after my surgery for an entire month. It was frustrating, but from what my NUT and doctor have told me it is normal to stall. Weight loss is not always a constant downward slope - for many people it is more like steps - where we lose - then plateau for a bit - then lose again. Just make sure you get your Protein and Water in (at least 60 gr. protein and 60 oz water) - and your body will eventually respond. Also, you might not be eating enough calories. You might want to talk with your NUT to make sure. If you do not get enough calories your body can respond by going into a starvation mode where it tries to hang on to whatever it can. When I met with my NUT the first thing she did was tell me to eat more - don't know if that was the trick, but my stall ended that day lol. It sometimes defies logic. Hang in there - let your body adjust and keep following your doctor's / NUT's protocol. The weight will soon start to fall off again. Also, you might want to stay away from the scale for a bit and try not to let it rule how you feel. You are doing great!!!

What can I do with...cottage cheese?

unfortunately my pouch reacted violently when I tried cottage cheese - hoping someday to be able to eat it again because I love it. I also loved it with fruit - especially mandarin oranges - - Have you tried it with chives?

    Gas pains post op

It was two weeks to the day that my gas pains went away. Didn't seem to matter what I did to try to get rid of it lol - Hope it goes away soon for you! And congratulations on your surgery!

    Phentabz

I agree with Babbs - and one further note would be that it might not be good for your heart. You only have one heart - best take care of it

    Using the bathroom

I was constipated until I started the pureed stage. I think the Protein shakes do that to you - and don't worry about the color; once I got started eating real food mine went back to normal. I don't rely on shakes for my protein anymore - although some folks do; I had a lot of trouble with whey protein so the incentive to learn to eat without the shakes was great. Try to get some Fiber in and be sure you are drinking lots of fluids. Although some folks continue to have problems with constipation and take laxatives I do not need to. Good luck!
  18. Although I am losing pretty proportionately, my face is the most noticeable. I think because it was the last to get 'fat' it was the first to lose. I am hoping exercise helps to keep things even. I exercised in the pool a lot before surgery and am trying to do the same now. I hope to get clearance from my doctor on Thursday to start with weights to help tone a bit. (I am 6 weeks out from surgery)

    Surgery Date

Yeah, the first few days of the liquid diet are really rough. For most of us it gets better after the 3rd day. Just stay as busy as possible and remember why you are doing this. Ha Ha - on the other side of the surgery you will need to do the same diet and will struggle to get it all in! Good luck with everything!
  20. yeah, I wish I could eat that much at a time - then I could only eat 3 times a day! I would make my schedule a lot easier. I think eating the amount you do right now helps for a more balanced diet - I barely eat anything that is not Protein and I really miss fruit and veggies a lot. Hopefully by time I get to 1/2 I will be able to get those in to my satisfaction.

    Onederland!

Congrats! How awesome! I hope to be there soon.
  22. I think every program is different. I am only at 6 weeks, but my NUT just cleared me for 3 oz and told me to gradually increase to 1/2 cup by 4 months. I find I can only eat about 2 oz Protein and I add either some fruit or veggie (a bite ha ha). But she also has me eating more than 3 times a day which is hard. That being said, I can eat about 1/2 cup Soup and chili is my favorite soup right now.
  23. Stalls happen. I had one only a week out from surgery that lasted 4 weeks. I can tell you I was doing everything I was supposed to do. Then after four weeks the scale started to move and I have lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks. I think sometimes our bodies just need to catch up with itself. Those four weeks I didn't lose any weight but I lost a lot of inches. Hang in there! If you are doing everything you are supposed to the weight will come off! Try staying off the scale for awhile so you don't get overly frustrated. Take care!
  24. are you drinking at least 60 ounces of fluids and trying to get in 60 grams of Protein? Those are so important. That being said, I got my energy back in pretty much full force around 4 weeks out. I pray that yours will return really soon!
  25. hi and welcome! Yes, there is a lot to be learned from this website. There probably is a December group out there if you want to get into that. My surgery was in October and we had a group. It is nice to have the support of folks going through surgery at or near the time you go through. If you have any questions - there is probably a thread or two out there that could help - if you don't see your question out there, be sure to ask. Lot's of folks here and lots of experience with WLS. Again, Welcome!
