  1. That comment from a friend would've really and pissed me off....BIG TIME!!! That was supposed to be a friend. My best friend and my family were initially the only people I planned on telling. When I told my best friend she said "well I don't think it's fair that people get surgery to be skinny. Now I'm gonna be the fat girl of us two"..... Ummmmmm what? Guess who isn't my best friend anymore. And this also played a role in why I decided to be open about my surgery. I needed the support and the people I wanted it from weren't supportive and the people who I never imagined would support me have been there the most. Crazy. You learn who your friends are in this insane journey.
  2. Hi everyone, I just was wondering if it's possible to lose too much weight too fast. I'm 5 days post op and I've lost 8 pounds since day of surgery. Normally I would be super excited! And believe me I am! But I can take about 20oz of liquids a day and I'm trying to make as much of it protein as possible. According to my program papers I should be able to drink more than that. I try to get my sips in and I'm honestly doing better than where I started. I guess my concern is, I don't want to lose all this weight so fast that I STILL end up unhealthy with malabosorbtion issues. I already feel weak at times and the room spins when I get up super fast. Sipping doesn't hurt but I fill really fast (obviously). I just want to know if losing weight this fast is common. And if I should expect it to level out.
  3. So update: I'm one week post op today and I weigh 224.5. So 10.5 pound loss in a week. I need to start moving more. I just cramp up really bad after a bit. I'm happy about how fast I'm losing because I really wasn't expecting this since i started at a smaller bmi. I start purée foods tomorrow and switch to only eating three times a day with protein shakes in between. It's going to be interesting to see how this effects my rate of weight loss.
  4. That's almost identical to what mine says. But I lost 15ish pounds on mine and was still approved. I think it just depends on who reviews your case at insurance and what your hospital all submits to them. I really tried to lose weight on my own because my program has a no gain policy. Every month I weigh in I wasn't allowed to gain ONE pound more than my previous weigh in so I was paranoid about my monthly visits. I would call your insurance company and talk to someone on what they define as "fail" then I would call your program and talk to them about what they think.

    alcohol

I would just like to add. Sorry for my terrible spelling errors in my first point. I am a week post op and still taking pain meds so I was really out of it typing this response. But I think you get what I'm saying lol

    alcohol

Yes. The question is SHOULD you. Alcohol after surgery can cause a few problems. 1. Addiction transfer- if you have a food addiction prior to surgery, it's a lot easier to move from one addiction to another when you can't compulsively eat anymore 2. The way your body processes alcohol after surgery is a lot different. Most people lose their tolerance and are flat out drunk after a few sips. So don't ever drink and drive after surgery. Not even one drink. For someone who is alcohol sensitive after surgery ONE alcoholic drink to a bypass patient is the same as almost SIX to someone who hasn't had the surgery. Your blood alcohol % flies through the roof really quick. Some people have no problem with it but most can't drink like they use to. 3. It's calories. As fun as drinking is (I'm 22 so I've only drank for a year and now I have given it up which is hard with my social life), it's not a necessity. My program has a flat out no alcohol for a year policy but not everyone is like that. I'm not taking the risk alcohol after surgery can bring so I plan on waiting a couple years.
  7. I'm worried about this too. I'm 6 days post op and I only went today with the assistance of a suppository. I feel like it's part of why I have discomfort. I only can pee if I have water running and wipe myself with a wet washcloth first. Idk what's going on down there but I hope it all goes back to normal soon!

Time off work? One week? More?

I'm almost 6 days post op and there's no way I would be able to go to work tomorrow. I'm exhausted nonstop and my pouch is too sensitive to everything at the moment. So if I eat something wrong or even eat a bite more than I should at the moment, the consequences are terrible. I'm on my feet at both my jobs so I took 2 weeks off.

    Hospital stay

My stay was almost two days, about 40 hours. Got there at 5:30 am on September 30th. Left October 1st at 8:30pm. It just depends on how your doing. My hospital had 3 requirements you had to meet before you could go home. 1. Pain management 2. 40 sips in 3. Had to pee My stay was longer because I couldn't pee. Lol
  10. I talked to them this morning and they said as long as I'm working on my sips and taking my Vitamins I should be ok.

    Any complications?

I had my surgery almost 5 days ago. I had a few "complications" nothing too serious but it was enough to drive me insane in the hospital. 1. My heart rate was high the entire time. At resting it was about 115. When I was in pain or stressed it would reach 140. We attributed it to anxiety. It was my first major surgery and being alone hearing all the machines stressed me out. They eventually had me swallow Valium at like 3am because my heart rate stayed over 125 for way too long. And it really helped. Once I was calm I could finally sleep and I felt a lot better. 2. Peeing. I know this doesn't sound crazy but not being able to go is a medical emergency and extremely painful after having abdominal surgery. After 4 hours in recovery they brought me to my room. Within the next two hours I had to go to the bathroom EXTREMELY bad. They helped me up to the bathroom and I couldn't go. They did a bladder scan and I was almost two times the amount that they catheterize people at (500cc, I was 900cc). So they put in a catheter and it stayed there until the next morning. They took it out and tried getting me to go all day but I couldn't even when I had to. Later in the day my bladder was painfully full again so they had to catheterize me again (this one didn't stay in tho). I couldn't go to the bathroom on my own until 9pm. I met all the go home requirements by noon except for my ability to go to the bathroom. I still have trouble going which isn't always fun but I think my bladder has been really slow to come back from the surgery. So complications as in leaking or trouble with throwing up I haven't had yet. But those were the two things that were an immediate concern after waking up from surgery. Other than those, I've been really good. Everything I thought would be rough wasn't, like swallowing or burping. Best of luck on your journey. I hope it goes smooth for you!

    Weight loss journey.

Girl i couldn't agree more! I've been at this since Dec of 2014! It's taking forever! Last minute discovery of mild sleep apnea set me wayyyy back. I have an appt on Tues to go in to my surgeons off to sign consent for surgery and have my things submitted to insurance. Here's to praying for a speedy surgery date afterwards! Thanks! I'm now 4 days post op and it was definitely an adventure. Everything is going smooth now but the hospital stay and day of surgery was rough. Glad the wait is over. And I'm already 6 pounds down.

  17. That's awesome congrats!!! Use to live in the springs so not to far from where you are!
  18. So I had my surgery on September 30th and I'm happy to say that things went relatively well. I only had three things I struggled with after surgery. 1. Immediately waking up I was miserable. They gave me everything they legally could and I still thought I was going to die for like 4 hours. 2. My heart rate. At "resting" it was at 115. When I wasn't feeling good it would get over 140. So they watched my heart really close. I think a lot of it was hospital anxiety. They finally got it to calm down with Valium at like 3 in the morning but by calm I mean 110. 3. Peeing. I know tmi but honestly it was the hardest part. My sips were fine. Swallowing was easy. But when it came to going to the bathroom I couldn't go. On surgery day I had to have a catheter because my bladder reached 800cc (catheter requirement is 500cc). I had the catheter over night and when they took it out the next morning I couldn't go on my own. Eventually my bladder got over 500cc again so they used a straight catheter. I didn't go on my own until late that night. THEN I got to go home. I still struggle now. I have to have Water running and use a wet cloth to get me to go. It's weird but it works. In the hospital they tried peppermint oils, showers, everything. It was so frustrating. Now I'm home and I weighed myself. I've lost five pounds already which is odd. Not complaining but I was expecting a weight gain from fluids and swelling. I struggle with Protein. Yogurt feels good in my pouch. The hardest part about being home is my family honestly. All I hear is: walk faster, walk more, you don't need your pain pills, how's that baby food taste?, don't you wish you could have a pop tart. They actually went grocery shopping specifically for junk food because they know I can't eat it and then ordered pizza. When I said something about it "I wasn't being compassionate" and "I knew what I was getting into".... Mk so let's send an alcoholic to a 12 step program just for them to come home and be like "look at all the booze we bought". I literally just cried. This whole process they were supportive saying we "are all making changes together" and I come home to this. I feel alone. I feel like it's not fair. I've worked really hard to change my life and I feel like I'm being punished because I chose wls. can anyone else relate?

    Anxiety meds

I was told that I could take my Valium before I came to the hospital but I didn't. They actually gave me stuff for nerves in my IV when I got there and that helped a lot. However I struggled with anxiety the most after surgery. They kinda wanted to keep me longer because my heart rate kept getting into the 140s. It was bad. But when I got too stressed they gave me Valium and that brought me down to normal. The hospital should do a good job at managing the stress of it all. They don't just regulate pain, they want you to be emotionally comfortable as well. Just bring up your anxiety concerns with your doctor. I had my surgery 4 days ago so I have a really recent experience with this.
  20. Do you have comorbitites? My program encouraged as much weight loss as possible before. It shrinks the liver and makes surgery easier. I asked my program if it was possible to "lose too much weight" and they said no. That they submit to insurance your starting weight and they also wrote me a letter of medical necessity to go with all my other pre op testing.
  21. I wasn't required to lose weight but I tried really hard. I figured it was less weight after surgery to lose. My highest weight was 257. The day of surgery I weighed 235. I had a liquid diet the last two weeks but I only lost 8ish pounds on that.

    Sugar alcohol?

I was also told sugar alcohols are ok. Anything too sweet can upset the pouch. So I think it's just in moderation.
  23. I'm in a long distance relationship too! I've been asked this more than once. Lol it makes me laugh so hard!
  24. So my surgery is next Wednesday and I was wondering how long it took people to wake up from the anesthesia??? And from the time they woke up, how long did they wait to get you up and walking? I have a strange reason for asking. During the process I made a really close friend. She's having her surgery the day before me. They told us we get discharged the day after surgery (1 night stay) sometime in the afternoon. So if she's planning on going home sometime in the afternoon and my surgery is at 7am, do you think there's a chance her and I could get to walk together before she's discharged? Or will I still be out by the afternoon from my surgery?
  25. Well everyone in 12 hours I will be heading to the hospital for the biggest adventure of my life! I can't believe that after 7 months of pre op it's FINALLY ending. It's crazy to me that this time tomorrow I will be "on the other side". My highest weight was 270. My program start weight was 257. And today I weighed in at 235. So I have exactly 100 pounds to lose to hit my goal! So everyone, any last bits of advice or tips? I feel 100% prepared but anything to make this a little smoother is welcomed! I'm emotionally all over the place! But it's just nerves and excitement!
