    Things you wish you'd known.

Yeah to the above message! Perhaps the biggest most wonderful change gthat I didn't see coming is the absense of pain or the great lessening of it. Joints, back, everything just doesn't hurt like before not carrying that horrendous weight around. I no longer live on advils and stuff like that. But yes I second the wish I hadn't waited so long, I'm 60 and absolutely damage was done to the joints under all that weight. I've had to learn to modify greatly HOW I exercise. And one other thing that I love: the damn operation seems to have sort of turned me into a vegetarian. meats just don't go down or sit well, so it's just not a big deal. I'd always sort of flirted with the idea of not eating meat but this has made that very easy to do

    Things you wish you'd known.

I had only 9 days off to go back to teaching and it was ok though I would have preferred a bit more. Ok here's the scariest thing of all: At 5 months post op I can now see how people go through all this just to gain every pound back! Period. I've just gained back almost 10 and it scared the crap out of me cuz now I see that this operation is only a helping tool. By itself if you revert to your old eating habits you'll easily be fat as hell again. I'm going back to pre-op diet today. Scary as hell, this reality stuff

Do you think I'll be ok?

Of course, not a problem. You'll encounter a number of people who will attempt to baby you on this issue, including yourself, but don't pay any attention to them; yes you'll have no problem doing the online courses
  5. Hi Friends, so I'm 4 and a half months post gastric bypass, down right around my goal weight though I have gained for the first time, about 5 lbs, but we're holding well. Anyway, believe it or not I never considered that there would be loose skin/stretch marks like there are now, and well I don't them much.... so I asked the surgery team what can be done and she said I have to wait another year and half then ask again....she said 2 years at goal weight THEN they talk surgery to deal with loose skin. So I'd like to know if anyone has had follow up surgeries to take care of or to lessen the effects of the loose skin and stretch marks?? Please share what your experience is in this area if you would. I understand some bariatric surgeons do this surgery themselves but I don't think mine does. IS there a site I can go to to research results? I guess I'm wondering if the results are worth it. In other words can they really improve the look ?? thanks, good to be back here chatting. THis site was a fabulous source for me in my pre-surgery months and post also, but I've just been too busy to come on here now, god luck to everyone both old and new, p

    regret

Huh, yeah, I'd be curious as to why also; for me, the only regret of sorts is why I didn't do it in my 40s... had mine Feb 10th, a fantastic decision

    Pain meds

I was on mine for maybe the second day home (3 or 4th overall) but I realized I was taking it because they GAVE it to me and I was anticipating pain but there really wasn't anything tylenol couldn't handle. No, all in all I have to admit it was a really smooth pain free procedure; it was uncomfortable for sure, but real pain? very little thank god

    Spilling the beans

No, hearing you say that, guess you're right; damn it's irritating as hell!! My wife did the exact same thing, guess that was why I felt a need to just find a way to shrug and rationalize it away. You're right, it's not just THIS issue, she just can't be confidential about anything.... she grew up that way with this huge disfunctional family
  15. Mo, man, thanks for response, damn I just dropped down to 195 - hell haven't weighed under 200 since I was literally a child. Feels incredible. My life spent living on advils, soma, flexerile, etc seem to be over I haven't taken anything for aches since surgery. As my friend says, "Pedro, if I hand you a backpack that weighs 95 lbs you're gonna look REAL quick to put it down somewhere" and he's right; that's a helluva lotta weight to have been luggin around on my back those years. I feel the biggest difference in little things you wouldn't think of, like the ease of tying my shoes, turning my head to look behind me in the car, walking up stairs; just strolling down the street I find myself thinking damn I feel good and light.... I kept telling myself that all the aches and pains were because of my age, and yes, there ARE extra pains as we age but I was BS-ing myself, it was the damn 100 freakin lbs. Let's DO this, Brother man....!! Keep me posted as you get down towards goal. By the way, my original goal was 215 ish, then when I passed that I realized, let's see where this all goes...

    Spilling the beans

Yeah I've had the same thing happen, family members spillin thinking it's no big deal. Pissed me off at first, but what can you do? people talk. And in truth it ISN'T that big a deal. I know people are weird and judgemental etc. and definitely don't understand the issue of obesity, but it's certainly not a big strong word like "betrayal." Relax, I had to also. I'm 12 weeks post-op and now the comments have started about how I look TOO THIN, and my face and neck DO look quite thin now, but doctor says it'll fill out when I stay at this weight after a while.

    Hydration

I was drinking around 70 oz a day first few weeks, but now I drink close to 100 oz a day between coffees, teas, crystal lites, waters etc everyone says it increases the weight loss. Today at my weigh in I was 194, which is 11 lbs LESS than my original goal weight, I feel sooooo much healthier now as I really get light, everything is easier to do, stairs, walking, tying shoes etc

    Nerves are kicking in

Oh yeah, sure, I was thinking kooky thoughts, getting awfully nervous and all, but now I'm 12 weeks post op and down within 8 lbs of my goal weight and I can't believe what's happened here... it's been so dramatically life changing it's hard to put into words. I feel the best decisionel re-born. So yes, I was doing the same thing only now I think it was the best decision of my life

    When to start exercise?!

I'm sorry, but are you kidding? Start the day after the operation! I did 2 laps around the unit I was on at the hospital the same day and increased the walking every day since, they gave me the green light to start weights at 3 weeks, then crunches and planks etc within the first month. Get the pass now

Don't shoot the messenger- carbonated drinks

You ran it by docs, hell, guzzle away! (occasionally...) yeah, as long as we're losing the weight, healthy etc

If you eat out, where do you go?

Hi, I'm 3 months and a week post-op and I'm on fork soft phase, so anything I can cut with a fork I can eat. And in reality I can eat most things, but the thing is I try to either share entrees or order half portions and I STILL end up taking a lot home. It's great though a bit odd as I can eat so little and that's great. - it's the behavior modification I wanted when signed up for this.I even ask for salad plates because it looks so odd to see this, say, chicken curry and rice but it's around 4 to 6 ounces of it in the middle of a large plate. So point is there's NO problem at all eating out, only problem is in the head

These ARE inspiring, I'm gonna have to find the fattest looking photo I can find to post along side one now. My highest was 305 lbs and now I weigh 196 lbs, can't even express how good that feels to write that

How is your hunger after the honeymoon was over?

Ok here's weigh in day again, and of course I'm SURE I'll finally NOT have lost weight, that I'll either be the same as last week or have actrually gained but we'll see, when the school bnurse comes in in an hour I'll weigh, so I'll hold off on my massive amounts of teas and coffe and water etc until I do... hell, I even take my wallet out of my pocket, even take my freakin watch off.... I k now, pretty fanatical wish me luck
  25. HI, yeah I think at one time I might have had a BMI in the high 30s, but I decided to have the gastric Bypass RNY at a BMI of about 34; then when I went into surgery at about 32. That was 3 months ago, I'm now BMI 25.9. I decided to have this surgery because I'd yo-yo dieted forever, losing then gaining back some 40 lbs multiple times, but mainly because I had most every co-morbid element I can think of: Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bad joint pain, sleep apnea, etc. I no longer have ANY of those problems. The best decision I've ever made
