    Food and liquids together

It makes the food move too quickly through your sleeve and you won't experience fullness/satiety long enough.

    Why Oh Why?

Absolutely. They are looking out for your best interests, which include minimum risks and maximum results.
  3. I weighed in at 352.8 before surgery and was super happy with my 49 lb weight loss, only to weigh in at 360 the next morning. My surgeon said that it's perfectly normal because he pumped me full of fluids in the expectation that they'd be hard to get down in the next few days. Wondering how much others gained from the surgery and how long it took to lose it...

    Psych eval

Depends on who your psych is. Mine consisted of a few assessments (questions with Likert-like scale answers) and an interview about my eating, substance/alcohol use, family relationships, stress, support system, understanding of surgery, pre-op diet, etc. Because i regularly see a therapist, they also asked if they could talk to them about my level of preparedness for surgery. I'm a therapist, too... so i had no problem doing that and having a convo with my therapist about what my boundaries were.

    What’s Your Restaurant Secret?

I've been out twice since surgery, both times I've ordered something Protein and veggie heavy that i thought my sister would also eat. I asked them to omit whatever carb (rice, potatoes, etc) was in the meal and use cooking spray instead of oil/butter. I ate protein first and took almost all of the food home and gave it to my sister so i wouldn't be tempted to graze.

    What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

Yeah... I was told to avoid bread, especially moist bread, and sugar. But there seem to be a lot of people who will be enjoying stuffing and various desserts. And cranberry sauce

tuna with a little cheese melted on top and a few green beans:)

How Often Do You Actually Cook?

i loved to cook before surgery and that hasn't changed. i just have omitted all of the things my program wanted me to omit and eat a tiiiiiiny amount right now. I have baked salmon and veggies, chicken and veggies, made a stew in my crock pot (low carb, of course), made soft scrambled eggs, etc etc. I bought a bunch of little 4oz ball jars and pack left overs into them so i have meals to take to work and school. i currently eat about 1/2 to 3/4 of one of these jars (2-3oz) and always eat the Protein first.
  10. have to echo all of the other thoughts... you have to be soft towards yourself. you messed up, but it already happened. what's important is what you do with today. You can reflect on what caused you to eat outside of your plan, accept that it happened and make plans to keep it from happening again... so you don't feel this guilty and terrible afterwards.

    What's everyone eating for thanksgiving?

im going to have turkey and a little bit of mashed cauliflower.

    Why Oh Why?

high triglycerides can increase chance of heart attack or stroke... it sounds like the surgeon wanted to make sure that you have the best possible chance for good surgical outcomes and lowered chance of complications. surgery already comes with so many risks...

    Coffee?

my program says no caffeine, carbonation or alcohol ever... they had us quit on the day of orientation. I don't intend to cheat because i don't want the ulcers or diuretic effect.

    Regretting it already..(day 1)

i felt terrible the first day, too. the more i forced myself to walk, the better i felt. I even went back to work on day 7 because i felt almost normal...unless i had to bend to pick up something;)

So why does this annoy me so much?

i don't think those people are too stupid, i think they weren't ready. There is a huge difference, and it highlights how little the psych evals actually do to determine whether or not a patient is prepared for surgery. food is so much more than just fuel, its an emotional bandaid, a social lubricant, for some, an only friend. An hour or so and a few assessments don't fully get at a person's relationship with food, nor can it determine whether or not a person has the capacity to change it. I am a therapist (MA in last year of PsyD), and i have my own therapist (as many of us do for self-care), and i know how often people are dishonest on assessments (especially when there is no buy in for being truthful...like denial of surgery) and that it takes more than one session for a client to feel safe enough to start being honest about their methods of coping and problematic behaviors. What bothers me is that people are being approved without adequate screening...people with histories of eating and substance use disorders that may not be stabilized or may need more in depth therapy for preparation of the changes that will occur with surgery. I can't be angry at people for continuing to use their methods of coping when they haven't built up another to take its place...
  17. It's not marketing hype... I'm a kaiser patient HMO. There isn't any reason for them to market to their existing clients and they collect a very small copy for the operation, as well as provide us with lots of free appointments pre and post op. They've done extensive research on this, as well. Again, as we are HMO, we CANT disappear completely, even if we dropped from the bariatric program. HIPAA only requires that identifiable information not be shared, pre and post weights, depending on how they are shared could Be shared in a deidentified manner.
  18. they said that they don't want us to drink our calories, Protein supplements can add a lot. We are instructed to get protein through our food, but not to worry about it during liquid phase as most issues that arise for people stem from dehydration. My program trends at about 10-15% above the national average for weight loss and they monitor us pretty well following surgery, so i feel like they must know what they're doing.
  19. i take my vitamins and get my liquids, but my program instructs us not to use protein shakes or powders...

Had a veggie burger and it was awesome

i really enjoy boca burgers and the trader joe's veggie masala burgers... haven't had one post op yet, but can't wait to try them again:)

So why does this annoy me so much?

Granted, I am a newbie, but I don't understand the judgement and anger towards others' food choices. Changing your eating and exercise habits are hard... if they weren't, many of us wouldn't have signed up to have WLS as a tool to help us. We don't know what it is like to be that other person who is "failing" or "wasting" their surgery. I'm grateful that my hospital had us (basically) start the post op diet from the day of orientation ... 3 oz Protein (eaten first), 2 servings veg and 1 starch (very specific options).. a fruit instead of veg at Breakfast. So I had several months of following that and got used to what I was going to eat post op.... though smaller portions. I feel like that helped me to know how to eat now, but not every one had that experience. A lot of people are flying blind and i feel like they need support, rather than judgement. It reminds me of when thin people shame larger people for what they eat.. or concern troll them with faux concern over their health. That doesn't make them want to change their habits... it just makes them feel like crap.

    Kaiser - Pre-op weight loss

i was similar... just pcos, hypothyroidism and being overweight. it was a fast process for me. I wasn't required to show andy documentation of trying to lose weight, but i had a conversation with my dr before she made the referral about my weight loss efforts and i imagine they made their way into my medical records.

    RNY vs. Sleeve

i had the sleeve and only stayed overnight. Went back to work on day 7 and feeling pretty awesome...

    Richmond California Kaiser? anyone

I went through a similar process. I don't like the malabsorption aspect of bypass, especially since I take daily thyroid hormones. I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't have issues with my pills.

    Richmond California Kaiser? anyone

Richmond offers sleeve and bypass, no lap band. They'll do the duodenal switch for people with a BMI over 60, too.
