  1. I agree with Cathy_Anne. Your Protein intake is pretty low. I had my surgery 9 weeks ago today. My suggested protein intake is 70g. I could do it before surgery but since I have had a hard time getting without my Protein Shakes. I had a stall at 3 weeks and I've stalled this past week. I haven't been feeling great last week and didn't get enough protein, fluids or food in. So this next week should be better. I don't expect to go crazy during Thanksgiving and not really I'm worried about it. I'm still only able to get 2-4 oz of food down at a given time so the smart & healthy foods will go in first. Good luck with your stall and hit that protein.

  2. I'm 7 weeks out today. Before surgery I heard about the inevitable 3-4 week stall. And I had it. In the 5th and 6th weeks alone it caught up and I lost 17 lbs in those 2 weeks. I was a bit frustrated but try to keep in mind that many people hit that stall and it's just your body trying to figure things out. Keep following the rules and your body will fall in line.

  3. See, my nutritionist is a lot more realistic. We can use straws as long as we sip slowly and don't gulp air like kids tend to do. Gum is fine, because it helps clean your teeth and (if you're impatient like me) it gives you something to do during that 30-minute wait after a meal til you can drink again. I'm almost seven months out and I've used straws almost from the start with no issues. Every doctor/nutritionist is different!

I listened to a podcast on bariatrics and it was said there is nothing proving that drinking from a straw introduces more air into your new stomach more than normal drinking does. I've drank from a straw 4 weeks post-op and never had an issue. If I'm totally honest I'd say I had less of an issue. I truly wonder where this initially came about.

  4. Hi! I had my bypass on 9/5. I am 5'11' and in February i was over 285 lbs. On September the 5th, thanks to the pre-op diet i reached 250 lbs (-35lb in 7 months). I also became fully vegan in June. These past two months, since my surgery day, have been really interesting to me. Bean Soups are my best friends as well. I can have 1 full cup of them easily. I still drink 1 plant based Protein Shake a day (breakfast) and/or 1 plant based Protein bar a day. I can eat more than I expected, and I tolerate small amount of sugar and fat. When i eat solid food, unless it is crunchy i can tolerate less than half a cup. I hurted my self 2-3 times by eating too fast and it was a very unpleasant sensation. I keep track of nutrients and calories. My surgeon is impressed by the fact that I daily reach around 70g of Proteins in less than 1000kcal. I am pretty happy. This morning my weight was 199 (-51 lbs in two months, - 86 since February) and I am about to get ready for my cycling class. Tomorrow I have another checkup and I'll go through some blood tests and stuff and I am confident they will be great. The past one were perfect and I have no issue with my Vitamins or Water input. Good luck to all of you. Here a couple of picture of before/after IMG_8913.JPG.04013a41263e2ebc65e2e1af5ab3b8d9.JPG IMG_9112.JPG.578e3f1fa5d820184b8cf0faa1fae385.JPG

  5. I have had an easy recovery. Very few problems. I have lost about 40 pounds in less than 2 month and I am pretty happy with that. I keep losing about 2.5 pounds per week. I have discovered that Soups are my best friend and that I cannot tolerate anything with added sugar. I cannot handle red meat either unless it is meatball or something extremely soft like that. My typical lunch is two spoonful of mashed potatoes with a spoonful or two of canned tuna or a half a cup of chicken Soup. I don't really have any desire to eat cakes and candies because I know that it won't end well. I love this! This is the reason I chose bypass.

Keep it up!!! Congratulations on your hard work. It's also one of the reasons I chose the bypass as well.

Went to my pre op nutritional class today! I assumed my program has the two week liquid diet. Totally doesn't. I almost crapped myself when she said I just had to do it the day before. However, just with my medical background I will be doing some variation of the liver shrinking diets despite them telling me I don't have to. I don't wanna bleed out or get a knick! That wouldn't be fun. On top of that, due to me thinking that I had to do the 2 week pre op liquid diet....I already had my food funerals. Might as well get in the right head space since I thought thats what I had to do anyway.
Oh also, since its official that my date IS set - we went and booked the hotel! Its getting SO close and SO real! Holy moly! The nerves are starting to hit me! Thanks for listening to me ramble! lol.

I had the shoulder pain as well. My aunt who is a nurse and also a sleeper told me it's the vega nerve that gets irritated and does go away. About 2 days after she told me that my pain was gone. I was about 5 weeks out. Heading into my 7th week now. How are you checking out?

  7. I talked to my RD about that today. She said, respect that feeling and don't force it. And if I'm not getting my Protein, then to really supplement with the protein drinks.< br>

I absolutely have to do this or I wouldn't get my protein in. Thank goodness for the unflavored protein that I put in my drinks and mushy foods. It's just frustrating having to think about eating constantly. My weight problem wasn't really with amounts of food. I used to be a runner, injured both feet and became sedentary. Then I became depressed. I've never eaten a lot just wrong. When running I ate a lot of protein but also a lot of carbs that gave me energy to run. Can't do that when you're sedentary.

  8. I'm getting enough Protein in by adding unflavored protein to my flavored water and all mushy foods. I had my 6 weeks checkup a couple of days ago and was told my body is still healing and trying to find it's way. That it will get better. I guess I'm am just so tired of having to think about it constantly since I eat, I'm full fast, hungry fast, think about it again. I will say I am actually logging amount of food and times that I'm eating and I have been going a little longer without hunger the past 10 days. I was also told during my checkup that I don't have to fight to get in the 3 Protein Shakes in a day. That since I'm on soft foods now I could get my protein in by eating it and continue to adding it to my mushy foods and drinks. But I do have to drink one per day. Regarding my Vitamins Ive had a hard time with chewables. I never get nauseous until I tried those then vomiting happened. At 2 weeks I started cutting it in 4s and swallowing the pieces throughout the day. I'm taking my vitamins, supplements and meds the same way, throughout the day in order to get them in. Otherwise I feel so extremely full. I guess I will just give it time, be patient and wait for my body to slowly adjust. Cathy_Anne I am from OKLAHOMA. Good luck with your surgery soon. Thanks to everyone for your comments. They are appreciated.

  9. I am 6 weeks out and I stalled at the 3rd and 4th week. I was flipping out! However, during the 5th week I lost 10 lbs and this last week I've lost 12. It's craziness I tell you. Yesterday alone I lost 4 lbs, but think it was Water weight seeing how I was a little swollen. I also agree with an above post about having a higher calorie day. It keeps your body from getting used to the same thing day in and day out. When I used to do Weight watchers I would have a high point day and it would help with stalls.

  10. I have been on flinstone Complete chewables and Viactive calcium chews with Vitamin D and B12 injections. I take my flinstone Vitamin in the morning and my Calcium before I go to bed. I read that drinking oj when you take the Iron helps with the absorption. I'm going to take the Iron in the am when i take the flinstone vitamin. good to know about the milk though. I wouldn't have thought of that.

How many Flintstones do you have to take a day?

  11. 6 weeks out today and I'm wondering if anyone has a feeling of "just drank too much liquids" with just one bite or one drink. I feel like I came in from working out and guzzled too much Water. Keep in mind I am only eating / drinking 1-2 oz at a time. Too scared to take in more. Then within a short time I am very hungry again. Just not feeling satisfied. Hoping someone has an answer for me. TIA

  12. I have been here awhile and just now a week out post-op. This subject is done a lot but I for one have learned something new each time. The struggle is real to get these babies down and to have them more palatable. The powdered is too thick right now and lays in my new stomach like lead. The premades are just too sweet at times. This is a subject that I zoom to when I see a new one posted. Plus the newbies are still learning the site/app. Keep the suggestions coming folks!

  13. I'm having bypass, with a hiatal hernia fix thrown in, and on the 19th, not the 18th as I said earlier. I'm simply horrible at trying to keep dates straight.
A couple of you posted book titles. I've downloaded bunches of them during the last 2 years, and some I loved, some I hated. The Big Book on the Gastric Sleeve was the first one I read, and I thought it did a good job of answering most of my practical questions, plus gave me a basis for really thinking through my decisions. Never Binge Again was interesting and made some very good points, but was a little simplistic. I definitely will use some of the techniques in that book, though. The Weight Loss Surgery Coping Companion drove me crazy and I couldn't make myself finish reading it. Plenty of really bad writing, with examples left incomplete, and lots of simplistic thinking (if it was as easy as asking yourself if you're really hungry, none of us would be obese.). The Success Habits of Weight Loss Surgery Patients may be my post-surgery bible for a while. Also, Daily Inspirations for Weight Loss Surgery Patients is a nice little daily meditations book, and Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery is a great starter cookbook for those of us who are foodies and afraid we'll never eat fine food again.
I don't start my pre-op diet until the 5th, so I'm spending this last week or so eating all the farmer's market produce I can get my hands on. It just occurred to me last night as I was cleaning out one of my kitchen cupboards that I should put family on notice that I'm not going to host Thanksgiving this year. I don't think I'll miss doing so, either. It's time to pass the torch on to my adult children.

I'm on the 19th as well and also having a gall bladder removal. Just closing up on day 3 of my preop diet. I have 2 stages of the preop diet. This first week, stage 1, I'm allowed 2-4 oz lean Protein and veggies for lunch and dinner. I also have to add half of protein Meal Replacement with those meals. Breakfast only a full meal replacement. Stage 2 I start on the 12th and it is a full clear liquid diet. I also get to have liquid diet up until an hour before my surgery. None of that nothing from midnight on.

Thanks for the review on the books. Help to know which ones to forego! The 19th can't get here fast enough. Good luck!!!!

  14. FYI to everyone (I think I got everyone in this thread. Sorry if I missed you just let me now and I'll fix it!) I followed everyone in this thread so that way we might be able to message each other and help to guide each other through this process if we need it! Kind of be our own support group since we will be going through the phases at the same time! Don't think I'm being a creeper! lol. Just wanted a list of y'all just incase I had questions or you did as well! [emoji4] CANNOT WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER 7th!!!

Hope you're doing well after surgery!

  15. My favorite is Unjury. My doc wants the meal replacement/shake to have at least 25g of Protein per serving but Unjury Unflavored has 21 and I received a 👍 to use it. I seem to be OK as long as I don't have to smell it while drinking. I have held my nose at times. SMH! BUT with Unjury it does not seem to cause me problems.

What is GENEPRO and its controversy?

  16. Insurance has 14 days to respond. Yesterday I learned that on the 14th day they can send a letter extending their time. However, I've read that a lot of people get their answer earlier. I did a search on my insurance company and also asked the question about how long it took others who had my insurance how long it took them. The median answer was a week. Its been a week for me and my pre-cert status is still pending. I started calling 2 days after submission and they told me two bogus things. Typical canned answer plus they gave old info. I have Cigna Open Access Plan and was told they were waiting on clinical notes for 6 months of visits. Cigna now only requires 90 days of supervised visits. This is per their Medical Coverage Policy for Bariatric Surgery effective 6/15/17. But I know its been like this for at least the previous year. My surgeon's office shows they received everything but resent it all again. I know they have 14 days but I'm going to be a squeaky wheel they have to oil every day. Good luck on your journey.

  17. My surgeon shared that he wants me to stay away from Premier Protein because it has too much Protein and won't shrink the liver...has anyone else heard this? I like premier and struggle finding others I like...any suggestions?

My program pushes the premier protein premixed and powder. And they do sell Bariatric Advantage, baricare and new direction. They don't push it on you and just require that our meal replacements/protein drinks have at least 25g protein/less than 10g carbs/30% vit & minerals. The only thing I've found I like without absolute hesitation is Injury unflavored. The others I can tolerate.

  18. I have cigna too. I am also scheduled for surgery August 24th. My surgeon submitted the paper work to the insurance last Monday. So it's been a week and I have not received an answer yet. It is making me so nervous. I also received a letter from cigna asking for more information but my Doctor said not to worry about it.
