What has been done to try and treat the ulcer? What surgery is he suggesting you have after bypass?

It would be interesting to see what your surgeon recommends. I say this because I know some surgeons will recommend bypsss or won't do the sleeve because of GERD. However, my surgeon doesn't think you shouldn't do a sleeve on someone just because they have GERD. Those were the words I wanted to hear since I didn't want bypass. Boy do I regret it now 😧

Just a peice of advise from someone who had GERD and was on meds before the sleeve... DON'T DO IT! I mean it may resolve after surgery and it may not...there's no way to know for sure ..it's pretty much a crap shoot. Just know if you have the sleeve, there's a chance you will need to revise to bypass. And you could live in misery every day until the revision.

I'm waiting for insurance approval for revision from sleeve to bypass due to GERD. My acid reflux was tested and it is severe (the worst my surgeon has ever seen). I am currently maxed out on 4 different meds, prescription and otc. The refux NEVER stops. Is there anyone who had the same revision and is still having to take a PPI after bypass?

If you can deal with the reflux it is possible it may resolve but it may not. I would try to wait it out rather than going for the bypass right now. However bypass may be in your future. I complained about reflux one week post op. It's now 2 years later and I feel like I cannot take one more second of it

I understand exactly where you are coming from. It sucks I'm 10 lbs from goal and need another surgery. I'm personally scared to death of bypass and I don't want it but I want the constant reflux less. You can't let the reflux go on and on because you might have another set of problems.

So you had a revision and it did not cure your reflux? Or at least help it? Have you contacted your surgeon? What does he say?

I was wondering this myself as I am waiting for the insurance to approve by bypass from the sleeve due to severe GERD. Looks like James Marusek answered by question. However, I am only ten lbs from goal so I don't have much to lost at all...so it looks like it will be taking a while for me. I'm glad to hear the surgery resolved your GERD. I think I'm going to be one of the few it doesn't work for, in which case I will lose my mind!

What anti acid meds were you on before bypass? Did you have bravo testing? If so what was your DeeMester score?

Whether your GERD will worsen if you have the sleeve is a crap shoot. It may resolve completely or it may worsen, there's no way to tell. I seriously caution those with GERD getting the sleeve. I think they should know they may have to revise at a later time. Doctors say if you lose the weight and the pressure is reduced in the abdomen reflux will resolve. Again...it may and may not. My friend never even had reflux in her entire life when she had the sleeve and two years ago she had to revise to bypass... And im waiting on my revision date right now (unfortunately).

Glad to know someone understands! Yes the other stressors are a lot as well. It's a financial toll for sure. My surgeon is 3 hours away. So with all the tests, surgeries, appts, gas, tolls, hotel rooms, etc it has added up financially. Oh I forgot my 3 day hospital stay a few months ago . I'm whining now. I sure hope so. I actually had other complications from the sleeve in which I had additional surgeries. So this will be my third surgery in one year in addition to all of the tests I had to go through. Manometry testing is not fun! Hoping my life will be better soon cause it's been hell for two years, one week and five days Let me know what your Dr says

I'm right there with you. waiting on a surgery date right now. I am on Dexilant, Protonix, carafate and Zantac Athough it may seem impossible, my reflux NEVER EVER stops. It is worse at times than others; eating is hell. Scared to death of bypass but I don't have any choice at this point. I had Bravo testing done and my DeeMeester score was 85.5. Anything over 14.72 indicates reflux so mine is really high. In the words of my surgeon "if acid were cancer, yours would be a stage 4."

Did your surgeon say you are having acid reflux??? If he is not suggesting a revision and you're not having reflux, why are you having those symptoms?

Yikes. Hope this helps. I have a very experienced surgeon. 20+ years This will make the forth surgery he's done on me and he hasn't killed me yet so I think I'll be okay. Lol

Did he offer an explanation as to why acid reflux occurred after bypass? This is disheartening to hear since I'm getting ready to revise. I know it's probably not the norm but I have been suffering horribly for 2 years now and want rid of it. Just the thought there's a possibility I would not get rid of it scares the crap out of me. I would seriously lose my mind.

I think you are doing great. If you don't know, weight loss from sleeve to bypass is slower. Dr Matthew Weiner (bariatric surgeon) has a video on you tube specifically on revisions. I'm waiting for my revision date right now. Did you revise because of acid reflux?

And no it's not weird you are getting reflux only 2 months after surgery. It can happen at any time, even years later. It's a risk having Vsg.

I have more of a problem with vomiting than nausea. However I am maxed out on 4 different medications for the reflux. I don't vomit everyday but I've had periods where that was the case. Since Jan 19th I have vomited 3 or 4 times but the reflux is constant. It Never ever stops despite the meds

I am getting ready to revise from Vsg to bypass because if reflux. The test you need to ask for is the bravo capsule. They attach the bravo capsule to your esophagus and it monitors the acid coming up in your ESOPHAGUS for 48 hours. They give a demeester score from this test. If the score is greater than 14.72 this indicates you have reflux. Mine was 85.5. The test is very detailed in terms of diagnosing the reflux but the demeester score is indicative of the severity of your reflux

I was sure you were going to say you had vsg and was revising to bypass. I haven't heard of someone having Barrett's after bypass. I am very curious about this. I am interested in knowing what the surgeon says about this. I myself am getting ready to revise to bypass from Vsg before I end up with Barrett's myself. I'm sorry...I don't have any input on the insurance question
