What does hunger feel like now?

@@kcbrook13 It gets better! just hold on....everyone said i wouldn't lose weight right away because of all the fluids they pump in you in the hospital, so don't expect it then you won't be disappointed. It takes a week to ten days and then you'll see results! Also, just keep doing exactly what they tell you to do as far as eating even if you don't feel hungry. I haven't felt hungry yet and i'm almost six weeks out. Lost 40 pounds as of this morning; woohooo! Just be patient and endure those first few days...it gets better.

What does hunger feel like now?

I had mine December 1, and I'm never hungry either. I force myself to eat.
  3. @@beckyrow did you have RNY? i was told tomato soup had too much sugar for RNY folks? have you had any symptoms?
  4. Whenever I eat something, i quickly burp. Does that mean anything? Or just that the pouch was empty and air was trapped and needed to escape? I'm still navigating the "i'm full" feeling...trying to figure out what it feels like.

    When swallowing tablets of medicine?

I am a little over five weeks out and I am now taking calcium citrate pulls, which are huge! They're going down. I don't enjoy it but I guess I better get used to them--twice a day. ????

    4 days post op... Thoughts?

@@samcl1 If I only ate when i was hungry, i wouldn't be eating much of anything! I'm not hungry--most of the time. I was told to eat six small meals a day, period. I have a hard time gettng them all in because I don't start my day until about 9am. But I try my best. i drink Protein shakes for two of those meals, and small little amounts of yogurt, pureed food, cottage cheese etc for the other meals. Applesauce. Baby food, stages 1 and 2. Good luck!
  7. It's a very challenging life, as you know. I'm glad you have much insight because of your profession. So many are completely in the dark when it comes to mental illness. Congratulations on your weight loss! May 2016 be a better year for you...all around.

@@ewinslo I can identify! i am four weeks out, almost five, and am finding I am starting to eat/drink too fast and am suffering the consquences. 360+ pounds?!? help!

I had the bypass on Dec. 1. Started at 302, now at 264 (including pre surgery diet loss). I choose RNY because I was diabetic, and had a lot of weight to lose, and i was hoping I would have dumping (and I do) because I was a sugar junkie, and i needed a tool to help me stay away from it! It made me feel more confident, knowing it was the "gold standard" in bariatric surgery. My surgeon trained under the doctor who invented this surgery (Dr Mason, I believe), so that made me feel confident in his abilities, as well. I am thankful for the malabsportion because it also helps me lose weight and will help maintaining my loss. I will take Vitamins etc the rest of my life. I realize that. good luck...only you can make the decision!
  10. @@VDB Thank you so much for your vulnerability in sharing this need. Have you heard of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness)? Check out their website at www.nami.com It is for the families of mentally ill loved ones, providing education and support. Hubby and I are monthly support group leaders and also teach the free NAMI "Family to Family" course once a year (take it if you ever get the opportunity!). We have a 27 year old daughter with bipolar and aspergers syndrome. It's been a challenging life in raising her. However, we finally found a medication that is working miraculously well for her, and in addition, she met a young man (with disabilities as well) and they got married in Feb. 2015! In addition, in April they were able to move to my mom's tiny house as she had to go live in a nursing home at that time. So...within a few months, we found a great med for her, she got married, and moved away from our home. We had given up home that any of that would happen. Thus, I am taking this time...every second of it!..for ME, ME, ME! I had RNY on December 1, and am so thankful for it! It feels so good to be able to focus on my needs for awhile, even though I realize, with her mental illness, that things may not always be this good. She could return home at some point. So....I live for today. One Day at a Time! My faith is also extremely helpful to me, and the support I receive from my church family. AND yes, my doggies help my attitude quite a bit as well! I think you're on the right track. I'm glad that you can know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE....there are many who can empathize with some of the challenges you are going through. Good luck!

  13. WELL....here I've been saying how well I'm doing and my pride grew too big, evidently! I just threw up! After feeling absolutely awful, let me add! I think I know why. I wrote on my journal that i drank my bottle of Water, but in reality, I still had about 5 ounces left to drink. I also wrote that I drank another Protein shake (carnation with milk and 1/2 banana in blender). It's getting late, 9:15pm, but I thought i better get it in, as I said I had. (I needed the protein grams!) So I had taken about 3 drinks of water, then i went out and made the shake in the blender. It was a little too much for the glass, so i took a drink or two to get it to fit. Then rinsed out the blender container and brought my shake over by the computer. I had another drink, and noticed all of the bubbles on top of the shake from the blending. Soon, very soon I might add, I started feeling uneasy...and then just bad. I wondered if all of those bubbles were like carbonation? As I wondered, I was feeling worse and worse. I felt i might throw up, so went to the bathroom. I burped. Again and again. Like about 15 times. Didn't throw up. Felt a little better so I came back to the computer. But no, i was NOT feeling better and the last thing I wanted to do was drink water OR the shake..i couldn't! I sat in the recliner, reclined in the recliner, could not find a position that made my stomach feel any better. Then I felt like I might vomit again so went to the bathroom...and this time, I did! I did feel better in a couple of minutes. but OH MY~~~!!! This was the first time I have thrown up since surgery (Dec. 1). So why...did I drink too much, too fast? Were the air bubbles in the shake to blame? I really don't want to repeat THAT again anytime soon....so I guess I need to slow down....not drink so fast....and do what I'm told! (Sip, sip sip.) Ugh! The tool works!

    My Pouch Fights Back!

@@James Marusek Yes, I'm talking about carnation breakfast (low sugar). That was part of my pre-surgery diet (five a day) so I was used to them and have some of them in my cupboard, still. With the powder and milk, I get 13g of Protein but if I had unjury, it takes it up to 34g of protein. But if you see my post above, i think i narrowed it down...it's the added BANANA that caused the dump. It's happened twice, both after I had half a banana. Sad...but that's the way it goes! No more bananas....

    My Pouch Fights Back!

Ok. I think I have this figured out. And I don't like the answer. It was the BANANA! Do you know how I know? Because I had half a banana this morning (mashed) and I felt the same way. Not quite as bad, didn't throw up, but felt pretty bad. And i had bananas both times. I guess I'm going to have to sacrifice bananas. And I love them.....
  16. @@Djmohr @@grandmaofone @@rte837 Yes, I get 60 Fluid ounces a day of fluids. I guess I'll have to check into a potassium supplement : ( At this point, I'm afraid to stretch or move my legs in bed at night! Those cramps are so painful. My Pouch Fights Back!

@@James Marusek hi james. If you don't think my above-mentioned episode was not caused by drinking too fast or from drinking the air bubbles at the top of the shake, what do you think caused it?

    Congratulations! Thanks for sharing!
  19. I'm so sorry to hear of your struggles. I hope it can be cleared up very soon. Thank you for sharing, which will help us all know that we should contact our surgeon if we start having problems. I am one month out--today.
  20. I am 61 and had RNY on December 1. Started at 302 and now I'm at 268. Everything went fine! Everyone is fearful about complications, but rest in the fact that most do not have any. I also am s sugar junkie, or WAS. I have no cravings now for it or anything else. I'm just not hungry--almost have to force myself to eat. Good luck!

    My Pouch Fights Back!

@@Djmohr, thanks for your comments. I used carnation for my pre-surgical diet, too, and have just been used to using it, flavoring the vanilla shake with SF flavoring: carmel or gingerbread or whatever.. With the milk, it's 13 Protein grams, and it's less expensive than premier or pure protein, although I use both of them as well. I like the variety! I had a premier chocolate shake for Breakfast today, on my way to seeing my surgeon for my four week check up. : ) My NUT suggested i add the half banana to the shake because I have been having nightime leg cramps. Anyone else struggle with those?

    Water?!?

@@tdawntaylor Well, you're right. I enlarged it and read it. That makes no sense to me! I drink 16 oz bottles of Water...in an hour...?? Decaf coffee, diluted grape juice, Protein shakes, milk....it all adds up for me. Maybe double check with your dr or NUT...
  25. I am three weeks out and have to say, i don't know how many more Protein drinks/shakes I can handle. I am SO tired of them! I did start pureed foods today and had four bites of a scrambled egg this morning, which was DELICIOUS. But I have to still get in two Protein shakes a day for two more weeks...ugh, ugh, ugh. I'm SO tired of them. What foods give us the most protein? I'm not there yet so haven't researched. meat? cheese? Cottage cheese? the thing is, we can't eat that much of them to rack up the grams of protein like a Protein shake, right? Sigh. Just venting.....
