The horse Is dead. Why go on beating it?

I'm not disagreeing with your point, but I have to ask, what are the expectations of someone when posting to a public Internet forum? I know personally when I put up a post, I want unfiltered responses, I don't need there to be a pitchfork limit if a mob forms. I'll weed through the replies to find the useful information, and if the thread has run its course, I'll simply stop coming back to read more.

Is the benefit to the OP the ultimate measure? Those replying are also individuals... offering a reply can be therapeutic to the replier.

    Only 75-80 pounds to lose

Most people don't get bone skinny after RNY... I believe average weight loss is around 70% of your excess weight. For me, WLS was all about my commorbidities... Diabetes, HBP, cholesterol... I knew I couldn't continue with the yo-yo dieting. Honestly, if I was under 100 lbs overweight, and did not have the other issues, I probably wouldn't have done it. However, I know would have ended up down this road eventually as I could never sustain weight loss.
  4. I'm 35, had surgery on a Thursday and was discharged around noon the next day. Pain was very manageable in the hospital. They sent me home with pain pills which I took a couple of the first two days home, after that I didn't need them. I slept a lot the first three days, by day 4 I felt good. I went back to my desk job on day 6. Pain was not too bad. I had a lot of gas pain across my back between my shoulders. A bit of pain at the incision sites but not too bad. My abdominal muscles were very sore for the first 4 days or so... felt like I was kicked in the stomach a bunch. Again though, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and was very manageable. Your experience may be different, but I bet at your age you'll do great! Good luck!

    Drinking after eating

A lot of people are advised to follow the 30-30 rule... no drinking 30 minutes before or after a meal. My surgeon said I can drink right up until I eat, but wants me waiting at least an hour after eating to have a drink.

    Running shoes

Don't do this. When your local specialty store goes out of business because everyone uses them as a fitting store only... where will you get fitted? My middle school daughter started cross country last year, so we went to the local, well-recommended running store. They analyzed her arch, stride etc and set her up with a pair of shoes. Prices were in-step (pun intended) with what online stores charged. Additionally they had a 30 day return policy if there was any discomfort with the shoes, and they give you a punch card so that after you buy 6 pairs from them, your 7th is free.

    Sautéed spinach/zucchini noodles

Have no tried spinach or any other green leafy veggies yet. I'm sure sautéing would make it much easier on the stomach.
  8. Went to Chicago last weekend (never been) with my sons hockey team. We went to Portillo's where I saw char grilled polish sausages and dipped italian beef sandwiches... also went to Giorodano's for some Chicago pizza. I was good, I ate 1/2 cup of chili at Portillo's and one meatball at Giorodano's... but the entire time I'm thinking of how good the other food looks. I too wish I had your problem, lol.

    Sautéed spinach/zucchini noodles

Great topic as I just bought a spiralizer attachment for my kitchenaid mixer last week. I made some squash and zucchini noodles last week and did not have a problem with them. I've also been sauteing some cut up zucchini this week and eating that. I like it nicely browned and a little soft, but I'm still getting the hang of cooking it. There's two things I found that can make it tricky to cook it the way you want: 1. Zucchini holds a ton of Water, 2. when it releases that water it tends to suck up the oil. First batch of noodles I did last week I used too much olive oil (you don't need much) and let it cook too long. It lost its noddle-ness and was too soggy and oily. I'm hoping this weekend to cook some turkey or chicken meatballs in the crock pot and make some more zucchini noodles. Let me know if you come across any good zucchini recipes as I'm loving the flavor right now.
  10. 6 Weeks post-op today... 46 lbs down since the morning of surgery., 67 lbs down since pre-op diet. Still don't feel like I see a change in the mirror, though people say they notice one. The mental part of this journey can often be the most difficult to control.

Congrats! Did you take "Before" pics? I recommend it to everyone. Even though I've lost 90 lbs. I'm still the same person on inside so it's nice to see the changes that have happened on the outside!

@dlappjr - Thanks man, appreciate the support! I do feel it in my clothes, but I have so much to lose, I know it's just going to take some time before I really start to notice it in the mirror.

@beachgal2935 - I intended to, but things were so hectic the days leading up to and directly after surgery that I forgot to get some before pics. At 3-weeks I took some pictures, and did it again today. I figure I'll take some again at 2 months, and then maybe monthly from then on. I went to Chicago last weekend with my son for a hockey tournament and my parents met us there. It was the first time in years that I let anyone take pictures of me... so I feel I'm getting there mentally.

    RNY vs. Sleeve

Went into my original consultation wanting the sleeve, Doc quickly set me down the RNY path. The main reasons (as others have mentioned) was because of my BMI, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The surgery went well. I had it done around noon on a Thursday, and was discharged around noon the next day so I was only in the hospital around 30 hours when you include pre-surgery time. I went home with some pain meds took a couple each of the first two days and then was fine. Slept a ton over those first few days, but by about day 4 post-op I had more energy than I had in months. Went back to work 6 days post-op (desk job.) I have had zero issues with any foods. I never was nauseous or vomited. I have yet to experience dumping, but stay away from sweets and carbs as I'm too afraid to try them right now. I'm 6 weeks post-op today and am in my regular food phase, but have been sticking to mostly foods from the pureed and soft food phases. As of today, I'm down 46 pounds from the morning of surgery (67 lbs down when you include pre-op loss), so an average of almost 8 pounds per week which I know will slow soon. I'm able to eat 1/2 cup of food with no issues at mealtime. 2 to 2.5 ounces of meat (tuna, chicken or turkey) don't cause me any issues. I'm working cooked veggies into my meals now... have been sauteing zucchini the past few days with a little olive oil and some garlic. Experiencing foods again post surgery is an awesome event. I don't know that my tastes for different foods have been altered greatly as I still crave many of the same things. However, being on the pre-op liquid diet, and the blandness of those first few weeks has greatly enhanced my taste buds. Vegetables I ate and barely tasted before are now full of complex flavors. Like the zucchini for example, I use a little fresh garlic so I pick up that flavor, but I also now pick up the underlying sweet flavor of the zucchini itself. Tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, green Beans... they all have these great flavor profiles I never experienced before. I haven't had much fruit yet, but the little bit of fresh cantaloupe and banana I had was amazing. The sweetness hit me like a ton of bricks. For me, that's probably the coolest part of this journey so far... finding out (and embracing) how full of flavor real food is.

    Ideas for on-the-go lunches?

One on-the-go food I enjoy is deviled eggs made with hummus. I usually keep a few hard boiled eggs on hand, so it takes me 2-3 minutes to make. Cut egg in half, mash up the yoke in a bowl, add 1 table spoon of hummus, salt, pepper (sometimes I add hot sauce)... mix well and then spoon back into the egg. 1 whole egg (2 halves) fills me up well. I find hummus moves slow through my stomach giving me a nice long full feeling. Generally I eat them with a small spoon and take my time, but I have taken them on the go and eaten them in the car in small bites.

    No restriction

I'm 5 weeks out and have zero issues and have yet to push myself passed around 1/2 cup of food. I've never dumped, but I am strictly adhering to the diet. Ive had zero issues with new foods, medicines, vitamins, etc. I've yet to have a "I couldn't possibly eat one more bite" feeling. I've had scrambled eggs, turkey meatballs, chili, tuna and other filling protein sources, but have never felt stuffed on my 1/2 cup servings. We'll see if things change over time as my stomach nerves heal.
  14. I recovered pretty quickly... in fact, within 4-5 days post surgery I was feeling better than I had in months. It's amazing what getting your glucose and blood pressure under control can do to your overall well being. I had surgery on a Thursday, had my first post-op appointment on the following Tuesday and went back to work on Wednesday (post-op day 6.) However, everyone is different, and your recovery might take longer. Furthermore, if I had more time off available, I would have taken it just to give my body and mind more time to get used to the diet.

    Post op bowel movement

Water is the key for me. If I'm getting in 40+ ounces of water a day, I'm fine. Weekends though can be a struggle to get in my water and then I'm taking miralax Monday/Tuesday.

    Grilling?

I want to grill some chicken breasts, my worry right now is it will be too dry for me. Also, a back wrapped jalapeno (ABT's) would hit the spot... I'll probably wait another couple months before trying many grilled foods. But yeah, I'm a big fan of the grill.
  17. Miralax... you are my sunshine!

Just curious, have any of you heard of or used the "Squatty Potty"? It not,, basically, it is footstool that you place directly underfoot while you are sitting on the toilet. It is supposed to facilitate taking care of business efficiently. It definitely does what it claims to do. I am wondering if it might minimize the likelihood of needing a laxative and, if not, facilitate its action. I bought one recently and was so amazed by its effectiveness I sent one to my brother!

    Just had a weird experience?

Are you eating the regular flavored oatmeal or the weight control? I'm pretty sure the weight control has almost no sugar per serving.

    oct.26.2015

I was an Oct 1st surgery and Water has been my biggest struggle. I'm fine during the week at my desk... on weekends is where I struggle. Running the kids around to and fro, I often forget to bring a bottle of water with me. When I don't have enough water, I get constipated, which is a bad and painful thing.

    Pre op bowel DISTRESS!

Yep, very normal. I had it as did many here. For me it started almost right away and lasted a couple days. After that I didn't have any issues up until surgery... other than I had trouble getting in all of my protein shakes each day as I found the bariatric advantage powder to be repulsive.
  21. So seems like I've hit the 3-week stall as my weight has stayed the same since Monday. My surgery was Oct 1st and the first couple weeks, I weighed myself every few days. However, with the scale not moving, I've been stepping on every morning in hopes it will change. Very depressing way to start the day when that number doesn't move. I feel better though, so I'm hopefuly I'm just building back up some Water weight and still losing some of the fat. One other thing I did yesterday is start looking around online for local gym/trainer options for when I'm allowed to start lifting weights. I also went to a few exercise forums to looks for info on how to build muscle post gastric bypass (or when on a calorie restrictive diet.) All that really did was bring up a bunch of topics where meatheads got together to discuss how little respect they have for someone that gets weight loss surgery. Very little useful info out there on how to build muscle after surgery. I want to end up in good shape, not just be a skinny fat guy. I'm hoping my NUT/surgeon has some good advice for when I get to that stage. Anyhow, just needed to vent on those two topics as I'm feeling rather frustrated this morning.

    Nutritionist appointment

Awesome news Sarah! I've been craving meatballs since your post the other day. Today I went out to a restaurant for the first time postop. We went to Olive Garden. Made sure to ask them not to bring any breadsticks and I ordered a side of the chicken meatballs with marinara sauce. They were delicious, ate one meatball with a little of the kids steamed broccoli for lunch and then had the 2nd meatball with some more broccoli for dinner. Cost was $4 for the two meatballs.
