I will by a week post op tomorrow! I'm doing well and feeling pretty good, however! For those of you that have been successful, how do you get a handle on cravings? The tv commercials, driving past resturants, all my favorites are everywhere!!! I asked the dietician for advice. She stated, the surgery only works on the stomach not the mind... Well duh! She also suggested I turn off the tv! I dont watch a lot but am still recovering and not back to work. After time does this urge diminish? Does anyone have tips or advice on getting through the 'mental' aspect? Thanks!

How Long Did You Take Off From Work ?
Angela replied to destineex33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm taking 4 weeks, my procedure was sept 26th. My follow up isn't until Tuesday. I couldn't imagine only 5 days. I would think at least 2-3 weeks. The pain isn't horrible but getting a grip on everything takes time. At least I think. -
I started struggling with weight at the age of 12. Around puberty I suppose. I was a size 12/14 throughout middle/high school. Thought I was a giant, tormented by my peers. After graduation my weight continued to climb. At the age of 25 I was married, became more comfortable with my weight. My husband and I waited a year to try and get pregnant. After 3 years, testing, fertility meds, no success. It was advised I try to lose weight. I failed. Then decided to get 'lapband' because I thought this was the safest and lest invasive procedure. I had the surgery in November 2007. Began to lose weight and felt wonderful. I was advised to not try and get pregnant for atleast 2 years. My husband and I conceived in Feb 2008. Our son was born Dec 2008. We became pregnant a bit early in, but this was our ultimate goal! I had a hard time maintaining the weight loss after my pregnancy. I attempted to get 'fills' in my band. It was so difficult to get in all the time. When I did, the 'fill' didn't seem to work. Either too tight, too loose, never quite the sweet spot! I started to gain the weight back. We started again to have another baby, our son is almost 4. No luck. My husband and I sat down and decided we were very, very blessed with our son and would be ok if he were an only child. My husband is very active and I just couldn't keep up with him. He can work a 10 hour day, then walk the dog or go for a bike ride, chase around our son. I've just been too tired and lazy! I made the decision to have the band removed and get gastric bypass. I thought the sleeve maybe less drastic, however, I didn't want to go through this again. After speaking to my Dr's, nurses, researching and reading forums, I decided to go with the RNY. I am terrified of never being able to 'eat' what I enjoy again. I love food and eat for comfort, entertainment. I need a mental overhaul when it comes to living to eat and eating to live. I'm looking forward to getting the weight off so I still have energy after being on my feet all day. Too feel better about myself in general so I can be a better wife and mom! Health and happiness is the ultimate goal!

Turning Off The Cravings!
Angela replied to Angela's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks all! I understand that overtime my 'mind' will change but like I said I'm a week out. It will be sometime before I can nip my crave in the bud with one bite! With time it will get easier, just have to keep telling myself that. -
I'm six days out of conversion from lapband to RNY. The divinci robot was used. I'm not in terrible pain but its definatly there. Yesterday when I spoke to the nurse for follow up she stated I really shouldn't be in a lot of pain at this point. Really? Wasn't muscle cut through? I have two major incisions which are swallon, bruised. The area in not red or warm. The way I can describe it is as if you've done many sit-ups and your feeling the burn next day. Can anyone else share their pain level approximately a week out?
-
Thanks for the responses ladies! That's the feeling, never ending sit ups. I decided to take plain Tylenol today and see how that goes.
-
Seriously? Well if that's true, than awesome!!!

My surgery was 9/26. Weight prior 270, weight day after 277! Weight day 5, 268! Thankfully heading in the right direction now! Does anyone else feel like the taste of artificial sweetener is always in your mouth? Ugh!

8 Days Preop! Packing List?
Angela replied to destineex33's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My must haves were Chapstick, my own deodorant, comfy clothes for ride home, couple magazines, phone and charger and a book. Honestly I didn't read the book, the hospital supplies most toiletries. Take at least 4-5 pairs of underwater. My incisions leaked a few times onto mine. Not a good feeling. I spent my time sleeping, walking and browsing the web! Good luck!!
