  1. lol, oh man... pickled beets and eggs are a special treat to me! No one else I know other than my parents like them though. I have just never heard of roasting them, it sounds... alien to me. I don't even know if my grocery store has raw beets. Going to have to look for this.
  2. Roasted beets? I like beets, but they are almost always pickled. How do you prepare these beets? Is this a reciepe you found and tried out or is it an old recipe?
  3. Honestly, I'd rather have the natural sugars than the sugar alternatives. My blood sugar levels are great with the reduced amounts I am taking in.
  4. I remember the first salad I had, it was decadent! Though I no longer eat lettuce salad. I only have so much room and lettuce has no real nutritional value. Almost all my salads are kale now. Make it and eat it the next day after it has softened.
  5. I was coming in here to comment, but there is some information that I have heard for the first time. I don't know why I haven't thought to check my blood sugar since coming off Metformin, I still check my blood pressure all the time. I get dizzy all the time like the people above me. Lots of fluids and I had to increase my sodium intake for the first time in my life! Powerade works well for both of those issues. I naturally tend to avoid sweets, but now I wonder if my blood sugars are also low. Time to break out the meter and find out. @jhclikesshopping - did your doctor tell you how long that condition lasts?
  6. I eat hummus almost daily. My favorite combo is horseradish hummus and roast beef. I love horseradish personally, but don't like the creamy mayo-esque Arby's crap. There is really no nutritional benefit to regular horseradish either. The horseradish hummus gives me a added does of Protein with my roast beef. It may be a little early yet for lunch meat, but it is something to consider. There are so many flavors of hummus that I use it in place of just about every condiment I used to use. If you really end up using it like I do, learn to make it yourself. You'll save a ton! Oh, and pork rinds go well with hummus too. and protein chips. And veggie straws...
  7. I know this is going to sound crazy, but try pork rinds. They have a ridiculous amount of protein for the serving size. An ounce has about 18 grams of protein. Believe it or not, my surgeon recommended them to me because I am having problems with low blood pressure. The higher sodium content and high protein count make it a good snack. I use hummus as a dip. I have even used peanut butter. Weird I know, but it goes together pretty well.
  8. I still look back on my "last meal" fondly. My wife made my favorite, hot breakfast sausage I made from a pig I had butchered, gravy, and scratch made biscuits. Oh, and a fried egg on top of the biscuits, but underneath the gravy. I could probably eat the sausage gravy now, I always made it lean. But the flour for the gravy would have to be coconut flour. And the biscuits are out of the question entirely. But honestly, I don't miss it. It was a great thing for that time of my life, but it is not something I will need. I have watched my kids eat it right in front of me while I ate a one egg omelette with spinach or ham. I love the appreciation they show my wife for making it and that is good enough for me. I think that was why it was so special to me. My wife is hispanic and this was something that she never made before me and she only made it because I liked it. It was just another way that she said I love you without words. Now she measures out portions and it has the same feeling to me. She wants me to succeed and that says I love you more than the food ever did.
  9. Fage plain yogurt (not vanilla) and mix it with a bit of any sugar free coffee syrup. Caramel and/or coffee liqueur are my favorites at the moment.
  10. Damn! I was just going to recommend that! That is my new favorite flavor too. It mixes awesome with yogurt too. If I can't find plain fage at the store, I will by the next best plain yogurt and add that to the container. Freeze it and you have awesome "ice cream".
  11. Those starkist tuna packets are excellent for storing in a purse or gymbag. Lots of Protein and low calorie. I love peanuts, so I always have some of those on hand. Jerky was my best friend for months when traveling. Otherwise deli meats and hummus are my mainstays. Oh, chili for tailgating!
  12. Wow... I mean just wow. I am very impressed and totally envious! That gym looks awesome! Oh, you look good too dude.
  13. I take Diclofenac (generic name for Voltaren) daily and have with no interruptions because of surgery. I have been fortunate enough to even be able to cut down to only one pill a day at most. More & more often I do not even have to take it. I was put on another pill to help with heartburn that begins with an "O", but my memory fails me at the moment. As always, talk to your surgeon about it!
  14. There really isn't much nutritional value to a salad, especially an Olive Garden salad. It's mostly just Water encapsulated in the lettuce. When you are allowed fresh veggies, I would recommend checking out a kale salad from your local grocers deli. Around here we have Meijers, Walmart, & Krogers that have kale salad and a Super food Salad. Much more nutrient dense. Another thing, I used to love ranch dressing. Now it makes me want to gag. The sodium content is ridiculous. So whatever dressing you liked before, get it on the side.
  15. lol, that is awesome. I am going to start using that one!
  16. Totally normal. I went through a phase where I was just mean and grumpy. I'm usually pretty even keeled, but the first couple months were pretty rough. I avoided watching any dramas on TV, not too many action films either. Mysteries and comedies were the best thing to watch. I also avoided people because I would just snap at them. My surgeon warned me of it, but I had no idea it would be so intense.
  17. I know my NUT had some recipes that used honey for sweetner. So I doubt there is any issue with it as long as you don't go crazy with it.
  18. Oh my, not only is that untrue but there are some famous examples! Queen Victoria, Marie of Romania, Marie Antoinette, Catherine the Great... it goes on and on! As for a male mistress, I think the word would be Paramour or Cavalier, but I can't remember my college Renaissance era classes 20 years on! I think gigolo might be close, but it is closer to a prostitute than a mistress or concubine. As for the OP, this is an intensely personal issue and I don't think that anyone is going to have a situation that is exactly the same as anyone else's. There will be some judging on this thread, just be warned. Me personally, I would never do it nor condone it. But if someone else does it and it doesn't affect me, meh.
  19. Man, I don't even know where to start on that one. There is a dangling participle and a possessive form of "forums" even though they are talking about a forum post. The there is the fact they are talking about censoring a rant. The way I see it; when the forum founder likes the original post in a thread, perhaps it has merit?
  20. You're trying to give me an apoplexy, aren't you?
  21. Your doctor seems to have it backwards. He works for you, he cannot tell you how to live your life. You tell him you will be having the surgery and he needs to know that only for treatment in the future. He may not agree with your decision, but it is not his to make. My doctor is pretty darn great in my opinion. But he likes using the latest meds. I like to be more conservative and only trust meds that have been on the market for about 10 years. That way I can research side effects better than what the drug companies marketing department does. My doctor will say, "I'm going to put you on X drug..." I would interupt him and say, "How long has it been on the market? I won't take it unless it has a record I can research." Then he goes with a more tried and true med. Actually, he used to do that. I am pretty much off all the medications I was one 7 months ago because of the surgery. And in regards to the surgery, he was totally supportive. I hope you can either convince your Dr to do his job or find another Dr that you will like.
  22. Oh man, I had wet dreams about food for about a month after surgery. I would wake up, feverish with desire for pizza. I can still remember the dream of melty stretchy cheese pulling when the slice was slowly taken away from the pizza. I would also see me grilling thick burgers, listening to the sizzle... then flash forward to me taking a huge bite that left my cheeks puffed out. Thankfully they stopped after I got to chew something instead of just liquids and mashed foods. But man, it was weird. I felt like a 13 year old again, but instead of erotic dreams it was food dreams. I think that was when it truly hit me that I was addicted to food.
  23. Let's not even talk about the 64oz of Water. That eludes me too. Like a pipe dream for me at this time. I wasn't a big water drinker B4 surgery. But I'm working on it. I keep hearing that it gets easier, but I am not there yet either. I average 50-ish oz of water. There are days when I am hot from working outside and I blow it out no problem. but sitting in the office all day makes it difficult. My surgeon said as long as you are peeing relatively clear you are physically OK. But always shoot for the 64 oz.
  24. I should add that hummus has more calories as well as protein and fat. It's a trade off.
