  1. Over the last two weeks I've started to develop rapid onset hypoglycaemic episodes. These are very different from dumping and seem to happen about 20minutes into a meal and I become drowsy and confused. Fortunately the situation resolves with a piece of chocolate or glucose tablet but means I'm having to eat more chocolate than I'd like and that's screwing up my weight loss which had finally got back on track. I've read up on it and it's a rare complication - http://www.healio.com/endocrinology/diabetes/news/print/endocrine-today/%7B1dc23215-49dc-4ad7-90da-346ba16663d6%7D/post-gastric-bypass-hypoglycemia-a-serious-complication-of-bariatric-surgery It seems it's a known late complication of RNY and I'm getting it investigated to rule out insulinoma but wondered if anyone else had experience of it and had any tips on managing it?
  2. I've started cycling to work and back or walking, so that's about 6km a day additional exercise which might well be why my protein intake isn't enough, feeling a bit better today so will see how it goes thanks guys
  3. Yeah I have been on solids for ages and thought I was doing okay but last fortnight have gradually got more and more exhausted and drained. Will see how it goes, but do feel a bit better today after two protein supplements.
  4. Am five months out from RNY and doing well, lost about 39kg so far and generally well although last week or two have been very very tired and drained. I stopped Protein shakes about a month ago and I wondered if that's the trigger? Are Protein Shakes a lifetime thing?
  5. Doing much better and home from hospital now. CT of my abdomen showed inflammation around the my new anatomy in the jejunum, probably caused by being over ambitious eating - chewed everything well but probably overestimated my capacity. I was also majorly dehydrated so I have to do much better on drinking fluids. Am restarting my phased return to work on monday and taking it a bit easier this time with a slower phasing to help me keep my fluids up and keep more balanced.
  6. So over the weekend I started to feel awful, developed abdominal pain, kind of like being kicked in the stomach every time I moved and food was worse when I ate or drunk something. I'm 8wks post RNY bypass and have been eating solid food for a couple of weeks now. I went into hospital on tuesday, after trying antibiotics for a couple of days, and had a CT scan which showed thickening of my jejunum. Slight raising of my inflammatory markers but no white cells or temperature, so not an infection. After three days in hospital the conclusion is that I had been too ambitious with my solid food and my new anatomy wasn't coping that well... Anyway I wondered if anyone else had had a similar experience or learning?

    Return to work...

Any flights during the first 6 weeks carry an increased risks of blood clots, so worth touching base with your doctor about it before you book the flight, if you do fly then wear TEDS, keep well hydrated and be as active as you can on the flight and in the days before and afterwards. If you can do the journey by train it might be lower risk.

    Return to work...

I've been off for 6 weeks and start back on a phased return next week, it took three-four weeks for my wounds to heal and I'm only really now managing a full day of activity without needing a nap. My work have been great and happy for me to take it as slowly as I need and I'm using the time to work on meditation and gentle exercise so that I am nurturing my mind as well as my body

    Pouch too Big?

I'm also about 6 wks post RNY and I can relate to what you're experiencing. I have had two episodes of trouble so far - once when some microwave reheated fish got stuck and felt awful with nausea and wretching, and once when I ate too much and that felt awful. Currently eat about 6-8 tablespoons without any problems providing I chew and don't rush. I haven't hit anything that causes dumping yet, but I'm sure it will come. Have lost about 45 pounds so far, including the pre-op diet phase, and am loosing about 2-3 pounds a week and happy with that. Stomach will stretch so I'm not so worried about size as I'm definitely not eating the mounded plates of food I was before, and I'm not starving myself with micro-portions either, but moving to a small normal size meal. Hang in there, take time to eat, chew and be patient with yourself and your body. If the weight is still coming off, be glad you're not so restricted, it makes it easier to be social.
  10. Weight loss seems to be back on track and have seriously up-d the exercise regime and am aiming for 10,000 steps a day and that seems to be helping, and my wounds are finally healing!
  11. Thanks guys (and girls), am doing well and weight loss is on track and wounds have finally healed and I'm starting to get out of the house which is doing good things for my mental health

    Finally got to eat....

I'm at the puree stage to, I got some pre-made frozen meals which are designed for older people who can't swallow well, and just eat the meat bit and if I still want more then the carrots or peas but avoid the carb. So far I've tried tuna and low fat mayo which seems to go down fine, and tried some cottage cheese tonight which was fine but think I ate a bit too much as definitely feel funny now….
  13. So I'm three weeks post op and in the puree phase of my post-op diet. I'm sticking with drinking at least seven 8oz glasses of Water or low calorie squash, a diet Protein shake, lunch is usually a low fat Soup or a puree frozen meal (I can manage about 6 table spoons) and then dinner is a pureed meal and then a protein hot chocolate before bed. Had some wound healing issues so have really worked on my protein intake. I'm still loosing weight but the rate has dropped massively from 2-3kg a week to now about 1kg a week. It's frustrating because I'm 1kg away from being able to get back on the wiifit balance board, but I'm doing about 8,000 steps a day in exercise and have started some yoga yesterday as well. So is it normal to slow the weight loss when you move off liquids?

First Day on Stage 3 Puree

I'm on this phase too, gradually building up from thickened soups (just had african peanut and sweet potato and chicken soup which was delicious and triple protein whammy of peanuts, chicken and skimmed milk). I had some tuna mashed with mayo today which didn't go down to well and gave me bad heart burn and some fat free mousse which was okay. I guess at this stage I'm a bit nervous about going more solid than cottage cheese….
  15. Hi Guys, I had RNY bypass conversion from a non-functioning band on the 27th March and so just starting week two of my fluids diet and getting a bit fed up with Soups and milkshakes but have learnt that if I let my fluids drop too much I have problems. Have one wound that's not healing too well, but saw the walk-in centre nurse yesterday who cleaned it and gave me new dressings and I'll see the practice nurse tomorrow hopefully. Otherwise doing okay, have been out a few times, get tired quickly but working on building up my daily step count and once I'm below 150kg I can start using my WiiFit again which I'm looking forward to. Not sure if there are any other gay men out there who had RNY, but getting some interesting responses from some of my gay friends who have always known me as a chub/bear. It would be great to connect with some other gay men who've been through this and talk a bit about the community issues which I think are different from straight people's experiences. Anyway would be good to connect with others online. Best wishes Justin
