Beginners Guide to Running for the Obese

@@mngreeneyes thanks for the advice! I seem to have the shin splints under control now. I was fitted for good shoes, got custom orthotics from my doctor, and wear compression sleeves on my calves. That seems to keep them at bay. They only show up when I ramp up distance too quickly. What's so frustrating about the lung issues is that, before my chest infection in February, I was able to run a 5k with no breathing issues at all. Now I can't do more than about 90 seconds at a time and the steroid inhaler and albuterol don't seem to help in the slightest! @@JamieLogical how long did it take for you to overcome the runner's knee? Did you wear any kind of sleeve or strap to help?

Beginners Guide to Running for the Obese

@@FrankiesGirl I was like that too. Even with my industrial strength Enell sports bra I was pretty bouncy. Losing the weight helped because I've gone from a size 8 Enell sports bra to a size 1. I'm much less likely to smack myself in the face with a flying boob now.

Beginners Guide to Running for the Obese

This is such excellent information! I really got into running last fall. However I seem to have the worst luck. I tend to overdo it and hurt myself and have to stop. I kept getting shin splints. Now that I've got those under control I seem to have developed runner's knee. I got a little strap that helps with that and I'm doing strengthening exercises to help as well. I haven't been able to run at all for three weeks because after recovering from an upper respiratory infection I've seen to developed some sort of exercise induced asthma - I cough a lot if I do anything faster than a stroll! It's been incredibly frustrating. I feel like a border collie who hasn't been allowed to herd anything in months.

@@OutsideMatchInside no! I don't even notice the Erythritol in the ice cream which is why I was so excited to try Swerve but it literally made my tongue tingle!

Baking with Stevia and Other Sugar Alternatives

@@melyssafaye that's a common misconception. Truvia is actually a blend of stevia, sugar alcohols and other ingredients I can't pronounce. I can't say that it's bad for you but it's produced by Coca Cola which makes me suspicious. Though that may just me being paranoid!

@@Stevehud thanks for the advice. However, I don't mind carbs, especially if they're complex. As an incredibly active person I need a decent amount of carbs.

Baking with Stevia and Other Sugar Alternatives

@@OutsideMatchInside I tried Swerve. It made my mouth tingly. I tried Xylitol but I can't remember the brand. I tried SweetLeaf baking mix. There are a few others whose names I can't remember. I tried making brownies. I tried making cupcakes. I tried making frosting. Some of the recipes are from Chocolate Covered Katie, Amy's Healthy Baking, All Day I Dream of Food, and Desserts with Benefits. It's been awhile so I can't remember the exact recipes but I'm trying to start increasing my protein and it made me want to try again

    Post-Workout Recovery

@@dlappjr I'm still trying to get my head around carbs too but from all the research I've done, they really are necessary for recovery. I've slowly been increasing my work out - distance, reps, time, etc - and it's taking longer and longer to recover. I'm adding in some extra carbs to see if that helps. BCAAs are also good. My protein powder has them but I just got an electrolyte replenishing powder that also has BCAAs and glutamine which is also supposed to help.

What do you eat before and after a work out?

I eat Greek yogurt about half an hour to and hour before working out. I get cramps if I do anything heavier. I get light headed if I don't eat at least a small about of carbs beforehand. All the research I've done suggests eating something before working out, usually some kind of carbohydrate like a banana, and some protein.

    CPap Machine question

I went from the highest setting to the lowest by about 8 months post op. My pulmonary doc put in a request for a new sleep study multiple times but my medical group loves to deny me for everything so I just stopped using it. Haven't had any problems with it and I sleep great!
