My current weight is 227 and my goal is 215.

This will be my first challenge - I'm in. Thank you!

I am almost 2 years post-op and maintaining under goal and there are still times where I feel like a busted can of biscuits (saw that on a poster and it made me laugh). I gained a little bit this week, so even though technically I'm not fat, I woke up, got on the scale, and cried myself a little river because 129 is quite the heffer compared to my usual 126. I feel like I will probably always see myself as the fat girl, which is why I weigh everyday because I have a solid piece of information that proves that no matter how bad I feel, a woman in the 120's is not fat.
I wish we could see ourselves as our friends see us. We'd never criticize a friend for a small gain or plateau. I wish we could be kinder to ourselves

Thanks for the replies. I took years to get to my former size and then I rarely looked in the mirror. If something fit, I bought it. Now that I am a L/XL everything fits and I don't know what looks good. I think this feeling is natural, but I hope it's not too long before I recognize and like my reflection

I'm four months post op as of today and had the realization that I am more critical of my body now that I am losing weight than I was at my heaviest. When does the brain catch up with the body? When did you start feeling content with your appearance?

I had a bunch of nice label clothes that I'd collected over the years that I was sad to give away, but I gave them to someone who needed them and she gave the leftovers to charity. Now I am making do with a few Old Navy purchases. It's funny, I used to have two closets full of clothes, not I have enough to last me a week. Made me rethink how much I really need.

Sorry - I'm from Manitoba. But I did want to wish you well

At my three month appointment I was told I was getting too few calories (800-1000) and that I should increase it to 1200-1400 so that my body wouldn't think it was starving. I was scared to do it, but when I did the weight started dropping off. I do work out for a minimum of 5 hours per week, usually swimming, which does burn a lot of calories, so they took that into account too.

Yes, I am usually an endlessly patient person, and I've noticed since surgery my emotions are much more volatile. I cry, get angry, but also much happier than I used to be pre-surgery. I believe it's the change in hormone levels.

At my three month appointment my nutritionist told me to shoot for between 1200-1400 calories per day as I work out 5 days/week. Once I hit 1200, my weight started dropping more quickly. She told me my body was in starvation mode and needed the extra fuel. I am also supposed to get a minimum of 75 g of Protein but am closer to 90 per day.

I had a hernia repair at the same time as surgery and have no GERD. But the hernia was news to me as I had no symptoms prior to surgery either. The surgeon tried to talk me into bypass as she believed I would have problems, but they haven't appeared.

I lost 20 lbs in two weeks. I had nothing but 5 diabetic boost/day.

I feel so emotional today, I have no idea what my problem is. I haven't felt like this since the first week or two. Anyone else experience this?
Hi Sunny80! I was told that we store estrogen in our fat cells and am wondering if maybe when it's released into our systems we get PMS-like symptoms. I have days like that too. Fortunately it seems to go away as quickly as it appears. Hope you're feeling better soon!

I've briefly thought of having WLS for years, but never seriously until they started a program in my home province (I'm from Canada). The two options here are by-pass and VSG, with them leaning heavily towards by-pass. For a variety of health reasons I opted for the VSG and even though I have been a slow loser since surgery, I feel stronger and healthier every day.
I now swim a minimum of 1.5 km (almost a mile) every morning, bought myself a bicycle and am signing up for yoga. It feels so good to be able to move again. I hope one day to be a fun grandma who can crawl around on the floor and be active with my grandchildren and this has been a huge step towards that goal.

I'm only six weeks out, but have been swimming for the past three weeks as I can't walk (need a hip replacement). I am so happy that swimming burns crazy calories - at my weight an hour of breaststroke burns almost 1,200 calories. I go 5 days per week.
At the recommendation of my docs, I am going to add yoga to build strength in another six weeks. I've gone to one yoga class in the past but it was hot yoga and at my former 300 lb + weight, it nearly killed me (but I still thought it was fun). Looking forward to trying a beginner's yoga class I can handle.

Hi there - I have Bipolar II and was stable for two years before WLS (I had the VSG almost 6 weeks ago). I don't think I would have been ready for surgery if I had not had the healing I have with my current psychologist and psychiatrist. They were both very supportive of the surgery and wrote recommendations to that effect.
That being said, I opted for the VSG to ensure that there would be no problems with absorption of my meds. I know weight loss might be slower, but value my mental health over anything else.
Please discuss this with your healthcare team - I'm sure together, you will come up with the option that is best for you.

My nutritionist also said to shoot for 1,000 but more importantly, get at least 75g of Protein.< /p>

@@Madmax68 - I lost 15 lbs pre op - liquid diet for 2 weeks. I was thrilled but diet was hell. Then just the post op liquid. I also had the weird experience of getting my period day of surgery - not fun, so basically once surgical Water weight and period weight left, I am down a total of 17 lbs. All in all nada since surgery 2 weeks ago. Like you bummed but hopeful.
Hi Natalie! Thanks for posting - I was starting to feel like I was doing something really wrong - or something was weird with my body. I'm going to continue to be hopeful - keep me posted as to how you are doing
-
@Naloyets I lost most of that over a year and almost 20 lbs during the pre-op diet (nothing but diabetic boost for two weeks). Since surgery I have lost three pounds. But I am feeling like you - wondering what's wrong with me when I see people losing 12 - 18 lbs in the first week.
I really am hoping it's just a premature stall. Did you have the same experience with losing weight pre-op?
-
Hi there Naloyets - I was sleeved on the same day and have exactly the same problem
I spoke to the nutritionist and she explained that I may be a slow loser or may expect to plateau a lot. I did lose close to 20 lbs during my pre-op diet, so I am choosing to think I hit a plateau and that next week the scale will start moving again

Hi Folks! I had my surgery March 4 - hiatus hernia repair too. i was having problems the first day after surgery getting down liquid, and had to spend an extra day in hospital. Ever since then, I've been feeling fabulous and counting down the days until I can get back in the pool.
My only concern is that I'm not really losing weight. I've been reading of people dropping 10-15 pounds in the first week and I only lost 2 lbs. I'm following the nutritionist's directions to the letter, but find it was coming off a lot faster pre-op.
Anyone else having similar problems? (Although I am happy to be losing anything at all )
-
Thanks Folks - I'll calm down a bit. As you said, I am still on liquids. Hopefully, If I continue to stick to the plan, I'll see the success you have!
-
I am nine days out after surgery and only down two pounds. I lost about 10 by day four, then gained eight in the last few days. I am following guidelines to a tee. Any thoughts?
-
Being so excited about having the surgery, I think I've told everyone. I wasn't aware that ignorant people would provide negative feedback and so far, so good.
