Gurgling Upper digestive tract after eating?
It drives me crazy! I take Gas-X sometimes and it seems to lessen it but could be wishful thinking or coincidence!

I had my surgery last Tuesday and I feel like I made a huge mistake.
Have you had other abdominal surgeries,? Sometimes there is scar tissue that require then to convert to open.

Oh CRAP
I hate to tell you this, but apparently this is a very common side effect and may get worse with increased Protein. Once you can add more Fiber from vegetables it should hopefully ease up a bit. Talk to your doctor about what you can take to help - mine suggested Colace twice a day. Doesn't always help and I have to take Milk of Magnesia too.

How long to walk?
@@Karlnjax - take it easy on yourself! You had some complications and longer stay than some of us. You need and deserve the rest. Just get up and walk around the house a little to get started. It will get easier and then you can try a walk down the street (preferably with someone just in case you get weak). Everyone is different. I am not great at exercising myself, but I walked 3 miles yesterday at 11 weeks post-op and I was completely wiped out. (I was tired at 2.5 miles / 50 min but I had to keep going to get back home!) Your strength will come back. Be patient and keep up with the Protein and fluids. VERY important for your healing - much more so that true exercise at this stage.

How much weight? How fast?
@@Marlymamamar - You may be panicking a bit. Your profile says you have already lost 90 pounds (assuming mostly prior to pre-op). That is a tremendous weight loss! I am assuming this took you a while and know that this is a marathon not a sprint. And you walked 8 miles at 2 weeks post-op? That is amazing! I am 11 weeks post-op and walked 3 miles yesterday and was quite proud of myself for that. Quite impressive that you would walk for what I am assuming is at least 2 1/2 hours straight. Truly you should relax and be proud of your accomplishments thus far. Now, having said that - if the scale drives you nuts, don't weigh every day and most certainly don't weigh several times a day. Weight doesn't work like that. Weigh in the morning before you eat and take that as your weight for the day. I do remember suddenly being able to drink so much more Fluid and worrying about it and rest assured, everyone confirmed that was normal. You haven't done anything wrong. Your swelling has just reduced making fluids easier. Once you start on soft foods and even more so on dense Protein, you will feel the restriction. Just stick to the program - protein (ESPECIALLY if you are walking 8 miles a day!) and fluids. You may be entering the 3 week stall a little early. (VERY common occurrence.) You are doing great. Be proud of yourself!

Two Weeks From H-E-Double Hockey Sticks
Swanson's Mexican Tortilla Soup broth SAVED me on my pre-op diet. It was SO good!

Mini Gastric Bypass 8/24/15 with Dr Ponce
I am sure you are anxious! I was anxious and my surgery was just a 20 minute drive away! I so admire you for facing your fears to be able to get this done. You are going to do awesome!

June 8 2015 success in the making!
Congrats! My surgery was June 4 and I am down but not quite as much as you. I have had a little bit of a rough time adjusting but starting to feel a little more normal now as I come up on 3 months, so I am quite happy! Now if I would just exercise like you....

What was the deciding factor?
I find it so interesting that so many people say sleeve is less invasive. It's what I thought too and ended up doing RNY because of acid reflux and because I never wanted to have to go through a 2nd surgery converting to bypass like some have to do. With the sleeve, they remove 85% of your stomach from your body. They can't put that back! I'm not sure how that is less invasive. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of people who have great success with the sleeve, but please don't just do that because you consider it less invasive. It took me time to come around to agreeing to RNY but I sure am glad I did in the end. RNY is the gold standard with many many years of results and reseach. There are a lot of threads on here about the exact same topic. You will see lots of differing opinions. In the end it is a decision only you and your surgeon can make but don't be afraid of RNY. Once you research it more, you will see it is nothing to be feared.

Pain under left breast
It could just be gas. Try some gas-X and see if it goes away.

So. Much. Pain. Help!
Oh my gosh! How horrible! I am so sorry that happened to you! When you are feeling up to it, you need to write a letter to the director of that hospital. That nurse needs to be fired! For what it's worth, you are almost past the worst part. day 3 to 5 were the worst (and for some reason Day 3 after any surgery if any kind is bad). If your pain is not being controlled, call the Dr and ask for stronger meds or if you can increase the dose. For the gas, try gas-X strips or chewables. They help immensely! You can also try heating pad on your back. I even had ice pack on my stomach and that helped. Above all do not get dehydrated. Use a medicine cup, and set a timer and SIP from it every 5 minutes. If you cannot get past the pain or cannot drink, go to the ER. I know you don't want to be back in the hospital but they can get the pain controlled and hydrate you. Hang in there. Promise it gets better soon!!!

Diabetics
I was only on Metformin pre-op - 2000mg per day - but I was sent home from the hospital without it. I had my first A1C this week and it was 6.0. Hasn't quite been 3 months so still some old sugars and will go down more. My endocrinologist marked my records as "Type 2 Diabetes RESOLVED". Trust it will go away and go away fast!

Taco Bell for dinner ????
I had it yesterday for lunch. So good and a good serving of protein and fiber!

First post-op labs
I'm not sure. This was my endocrinologist and he will do my diabetes and thyroid follow up in 3 months but not sure about bariatric surgeon. I see her Tuesday and I'll find out. I think I see here again at 6 months so I assume she will do labs then also. I believe it is supposed to be labs at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months then annually after that.
-
First post-op labs
I was just looking at my lab results again so I could send them to my bariatric surgeon (they were done by another dr) and I noticed that my endocrinologist had moved my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes to RESOLVED! I thought he said something the other day about not being considered diabetic anymore but to see in writing in my medical records that this has actually been removed is just overwhelming. THIS is why I sought out WLS. And I knew that RNY can have a huge effect on diabetes but wow, in less than 3 months, I am now not considered a diabetic?! I think I will hug my surgeon when I see her Tuesday. She effectively cured me from a deadly disease - in less than 3 months! What motivation to keep up the hard work! I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face. I just don't think that I truly understood the impact until now...

WLS for the "right" reasons
Good questions! And good for you for battling it instead of just going into this blindly! Yes - they are all good reasons. I had the exact same questions and even in the first couple of weeks post-op, I kept wondering if I had done it for the "right" reasons. I felt guilty for what I still considered an "elective" surgery. It took a while to get that out of my head post-op. I felt a lot of "why couldn't I just have done this without surgery", etc. The truth is, if I had done this when I was 30, then I wouldn't have some of the co-morbidities I have now (Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, joint pain, etc etc). I was just looking again at my first post-op labs done this week and noticed my dr moved my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes to "RESOLVED". I cannot tell you what an amazing feeling that is! Imagine that had I done this at 30 when I was told I was "pre-diabetic", I would never have had to have the diagnosis of Diabetes and the damage it has done to my body this last 17 years. It is a big decision and only you can make that decision, but not quite 3 months out now, I can't imagine my life without having done this. Keep wrestling with this though. The more you wrestle, the more positive you come out on the other side when you KNOW you made the right decision. Good luck! Keep us posted!

Coffee?
Could you try decaf? I know it's not the same, but it is the flavor you are craving, it might help. I actually used an individual serving of decaf coffee in my Protein shake early on. It tasted SO good! I am not a big coffee drinker myself and pre-op it often made me a little sick to my stomach sometimes, so no cravings really. Just wanted something different. There is also a coffee Protein powder called Chike (I think?). I haven't tried it but Shelly raves about it on theworldaccordingtoeggface.com. Might be worth trying if you can find a sample. I know that doesn't help you with your craving today....

How about some NSVs!?!?
My NSV for the day - 3 mile walk this morning and NO low back or hip pain! Wow! That is huge. I don't love walking that much and won't do 3 miles walks very often (not great at the exercise part yet), but it was so encouraging to know that I was physically capable of doing it without having to stop and sit down and "release" my back pain, before I could continue. This time last year, I went for a walk on the beach on vacation and had to stop and rest because my back was giving out. Can't wait for my next walk on the beach!

Intense pain in pouch after taking pain meds
Is there any chance it is pill size? That would seem odd 1 year out, but I was just thinking if you maybe tried crushing the pill or trying it in the liquid form as we too right after surgery if it works. That would be very frustrating. I have to take pain med for chronic kidney stones, so I would be in BIG trouble if I couldn't take NORCO (or whatever other hydrocodone combo pill). Or maybe they can give you a pain patch next time? (I have never had that, so I don't know if they make one small enough dose for dental pain but might be worth asking.) That would just process in your bloodstream not stomach. Sorry I know that doesn't really answer your question of why it is happening. Just trying to figure out how to get around it. Hope they can find a solution!

Phase 1: Getting insurance approval
Congrats! Thanks for sharing that! It will be an encouragement to those who are bummed at getting a denial and show that an appeal sometimes works!

How soon is too soon?
Don't do it. Way too soon. Some say at least 6 months, some drs say 1 year. See if you can find a substitute like Isopure Coconut Protein drink. If you don't smell it, it doesn't taste too bad. Whatever you do, don't put it in an open cup where you can smell it though! GROSS!

Quite a few questions and scared sh*tless of changing my life. Stupid, huh?
@@Indy _Mike - Honestly I think you are further ahead of the game than many that enter into this surgery blind and frankly in denial of their escape to food. I will tell you that I wasn't willing to admit I was a food addict in the beginning at all. I had thyroid problems, I just needed a little help to lose and then I would be fine, blah blah blah. Thank goodness for my therapist! (Sorry I know I said that before.) But seriously, I had no intention of really seeing the therapist as much as I have especially once she wanted me to admit I was a food addict. How dare she! But man am I glad I didn't give up. She tells me all the time exactly what you are saying - food has been my best friend for over 40 years. Since you already recognize these issues, you are headed in the right direction. Find a good therapist that works with Bariatric patients. They will help you work through some of these issues. When I started, "hey even if I don't go through the surgery, surely this can't hurt". I tried to quit several times but didn't and so glad I didn't!

Start therapy now. Do not wait until post-op. You will be too far behind at that point. And no smoking. I also had a nicotine test pre-op.
