  1. Hi Jill.

Welcome to LBT and the begining of your wonderful journey. I'm in Bakersfield and was banded Nov 07.

    Kelly

can you give me a little guidance here.. I don't even know where to begin as for buying shakes and Protein drinks... My surgery is August 1st. I guess I should start getting prepared but just way over whelmed

By the way your pictures are such an inspiration!

  2. Hi everyone. I was banded this past Monday the 14th and I am feeling pretty good. The worst pain is the air pocket in my shoulder which comes and goes. I am trying to walk as much as possible and are following the liquid diet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks..:)

Hope you are doing well.... I am curious to see how your doing... How are your drinks coming are you able to get them down?

  3. So yea I woke up to an open surgery. I was warned and also did not have a pre op diet. Now I wish I had done a diet prior to surgery.

My family sat in the waiting room, waiting and waiting. No one came and told them anything, and when they asked, everyone looked clueless. Finally the Doc came out and said they had to convert me to an open surgery. MY family was worried, because nothing else was said. Finally four and a half hours later, what was supposed to be a 45 min surgery was over.

In recovery they let my mother and fiance in. My mom didn't tell me she just cried, and my fiance told me they had to open me up. I didn't understand right at first, then it sunk it when I saw the clock and noticed 5 hours had gone by. I had to stay the night in the hospital I hadn't thought that was going to happen, so I wasn't prepared. My fiance stayed with me to help me get out of bed and help me go to the washroom. I walked as much as I could, hooked up to an IV and on way too much pain medication. Now I can't remember if I was in pain or not. My surgery was May 30th.

I went home the next day and spent the next 4 weeks recovery. I was only supposed to be off of my new job as a nurse for 9 days. Thank goodness work was supportive and so was my family and friends.

So now, almost completely healed, as one part stayed open longer due to my weight being mostly in my belly I am feeling a lot better. I wouldn't have changed it for the world, and am so glad I have this band. However looking at my belly and my large incision just makes me realize how unhealthy I was/am at 29. So now with a belly that looks like it was split like a fish I am more determined than ever to use this band of mine to the best of my abilities.

Sorry you had to go through it pb, I felt like I was the only one at times, and was so pissed off at the world, now having been through it I am the better for it. Just take it slow and don't rush give yourself the time to heal, mentally and physically.

how long is your incision ?

  4. My worst reaction came from my sister... She has always been slimmer had the prettier hair and the perfect smile... This is from some one who had boob job and face lift... Her response was "How are you going to fill with that thing in you... " Hello boob job ...LOL... She said that she knows I love to eat and I should stick to weight watchers... I told her I could own weight watchers for all that I paid into it...

My sweet mother in law says since my sister has put on weight she is probably worried that I might be slimmer than her one day...LOL I love my mother in law....

  5. We recently moved into a 2 story home... The stairs are killing me.. When I go up to bed its like I ran a freaking marathon... My knees hurt so bad as well... When I told my kids (now adults) that I was having the surgery they said but we like you "fat" they said wait that came out wrong we like you the way you are...Then they agreed that I would most likely feel better losing weight...

I don't worry about trying to tie my shoes I by the backless type... Tie them once good for life...LOL...

  6. Well I finally am at peace with my decision. When talking to the young lady she began to address my fears and explain things very calmly and clearly. I guess I just needed reassurance.

I left out the office knowing that this is going to be a good thing in the long run but everything good usually takes effort...

So come August 1st I will be banded and ready to start my new life...

Also I would like a buddy I would like one close by but however I will love email buddies too this will give me the support of someone knowing how I feel... Kinda like AA for bandsters.

  7. I'm STILL waiting for my paperwork to go to my insurance company but still am wondering about this. I'm comfortable with all the changes that will be necessary for my band to work. I know it will be hard work and I know its not an easy fix.

What worries me most is something happening to me, either on the table or from complications afterwards. Its my husbands fear too (I think) since he's not completely on board with this yet. We have two small children and I just am scared something will happen to me. But at the same time, I really want to do this. I feel like I NEED to do this. For us all.

    Anyone else scared?

Yeah... someone else feels exactly like I do.. I just hung up with my friend and she says that I am nuts that I should be so excited about all this. I said I just want to make sure my head is right.. She said well then you will never have the surgery(lol) I guess I was hoping for the magic pill not the stuff you have to work at

  8. Lots of great ideas but I noticed the mentioning of using a "straw" and thought I'd add a note on this subject. I have my pre-op dietitian paperwork and it clearly states that straws are a big no-no. I was unsure about this until I got my post-op diet info, but using a straw will create gas and it will be difficult to burp by bringing the gas up from the lower stomach, through the band and up through the pouch. Some people have no trouble using them, but if my Dr. says no then I'm going to follow his expert directions.

I only used a straw for the thickness part. I understand that we are not suppose to drink through a straw... Something I will greatly miss.....

  9. Ok I know that all I do is ask a lot of questions but this site is so awesome and all of you give great answers... So here is my questions

I am in search of what to buy for my post band diet.. I don't have to do a pre band diet but I think its time that I find what I will be able to tolerate taste wise. I love fruit and there was a site called Vitalady.com that has protien supplements, also when you are on the post diet can you mix "real fruit" in the shake as long as you can drink it through a straw.

Second give me ideas on what else is out there for the liquid diet...

    Thanks for your help:lol:

  10. Am I correct to say that you are with Top Surgeons? I have Dr. Naim and I have had other surgeries done at their West Hills office and they are awesome! It is worth the drive as I drive from Corona to their Beverly Hills office for all of my appointments then West Hills for surgery. I had my septoplasty and rhinoplasty (nose job) done there.

Yes Top Surgeons,,, Dr Surgey Lyass.. The feeling of uncertainty is overwhelming. I had one dr then was switched to him,met him yesterday, kinda rude sounding... (I could be over sensitive) however, he currently travels to Bakersfield, but told me he wasn't anymore and I could have anyone do my fills... soooooooooo when I called the Bakersfield office they were surprised...

  11. I went today for my upper GI, no problems found  However, the Lap band procedure is taking place aprx. 2 hrs away, though when I originally me with a surgeon I met him in Bakersfield it wasn't until I received a letter from the insurance that I found out it was to be done in West Hills... I called the local office and she said yes the surgery will be done in West Hills but all the follow ups will be here in Bakersfield, with my same surgeon. I go today for my GI and find that my surgeon is no longer with them and the one that will be replacing him said that he will do the surgery but if I wanted him to do the fills then I would have to travel to West Hills for that and all follow ups... It really isn't the drive its the price of gas.

What if I change surgeons do I have to start the process all over getting approval for the insurance or should I just stick it out... Really ticked off right now!
