    One week post-op

I have been struggling to get my protein in too. I found a bariatric blog tonight that had some protein shake recipes on it. I am trying one right now called Cinnamon French Toast. I changed it slightly and have another change I will make when I do it again, but it is pretty good. It doesnt have that protein shake taste.

    Fat free Creamer...

Good advice! I will get my husband to look and see if our GNC sells it. I am definitely getting desperate! right now I am sitting here drinking beef consomme because it has 5 grams of protein in it and its something different.

    Fat free Creamer...

I am somewhat envious. I am only allowed full liquids, like my pre-op diet, and the shakes are making me sick. I have to take nausea meds to get them down so I can make my 60g. If I can't show I can get it in then they will not release me to the next stage on Monday. Remember that warm things make our stomachs feel more full than cold things. Drink some more Coffee! Lol

    Fat free Creamer...

I would think that if your stomach handled the decaf okay then you should be fine. Just drink an extta6 glass of water.

    Fat free Creamer...

Yes, it is because of caffeine's diuretic abilities.

I guess I am going to go forward with the thought that some coffee is better than no coffee!

    That horrible gas!

Jeff, It took several days foe that to wane foe me. Now I deal with air pains because I apparently swallow more air than I ever imagined. I am now 8 daya post-op. We are all different in how this works for us. just know I feel your pain and it sucks!

    April bypass buddies.

Beachgal, I had surgery the same day as you and had a post-op on Monday and have another one this coming Monday. Seems like an awful long time without being checked up on after such a serious surgery.
  11. I was allowed one ice chunk an hour the first day. After the swallow test the next morning I was able to start on clear liquids, 1oz cup every 15 minutes. Morning 2 in the hospital I was allowed to try a protein shake

    Fat free Creamer...

It is not exactly the same, there is no denying that, but it is an excellent substitute that we can still have in moderation. I'm willing to make a slight change so that I don't have to give it up! your comment about it being like crack is far too accurate and actually cracked me up! Thanks for the giggle.

    Fat free Creamer...

Please, let me know and good luck! I made to switch to decaf about 6 weeks ago so that I could start to get used to some changes in advance. It wasn't my favorite thing to do, but I'm used to it now and can accept it as part of my new lifestyle. I couldn't accept no coffee, but I can accept decaf

    Fat free Creamer...

I haven't even been brave enough to try coffee yet! I am one week post surgery today. Of course, my stomach is also struggling to accept a days worth of protein still. I feel your issue though, my sugar free Italian Sweet Cream creamer is still in the fridge staring at me, calling my name.

    Bypass and Chemo?

I don't know much, but a friend of mine had bypass awhile ago and is currently undergoing chemo.

How long were you out of work?

I had gastric bypass and am unexpected hiatal hernia repaired on Tuesday and today is Sunday. There is no way I could have worked today. I can't even stay awake or sit upright all day. I do have a high pain tolerance and have only taken my pain meds once, usually late afternoon, per day since coming home. I cannot imagine having to go back To work or focus on anything except healing, walking and learning to deal with my new stomach and lifestyle.

    Pre-op liquid diet

Hi Tracy, I only had to do one week of a full liquid diet and on the 8th day was all Clear liquids. I lost 9.5 lbs. The amount lost may be impacted by current body weight. I started that week at 273.5 and ended at 264. I am 5' 5". It really was not as bad as I had thought it would be. I made sure that I was 'eating' something every 2-2.5 hours so that I didn't really get the chance to be too hungry. Make sure you 'eat' something within 2 hours of going to be so that you can sleep. Good luck!

    Drinking too much water?

I am 4 days post op and am now allowed to have 6 to 8 ounces over half an hour. a consideration with liquids is that they do weigh a lot so if you put too much into your pouch at one time it could cause some stretching or put a little undue pressure on the staples or sutures.

    April bypass buddies.

MichelleTN, I was just talking to my daughter about you and wondering how you did and are doing. I am so happy to be home. When they got inside me they discovered a "substantial" hiatal hernia so am a bit more sore than I had hoped. All in all, it could definitely be much worse!!! Glad to hear you are doing well!

    April bypass buddies.

I am right there with you Michelle! I have 7.5 hours until I have to be at the hospital. I am not nervous at all and don't feel like I will be, but...you never know! Good luck to you and all others who have surgery this week!

    April 30th Surgery

Truly the liquid diet has not been nearly as bad as I had expected. I made sure to drink "a meal" at least every 2.5 hours and no kore than two hours before Going to sleep. Also, remember that drinking warm things helps your tummy to feel more relaxed and less hungry. Hot chicken broth, tea, sugar free cider or sugar free cocoa can be HUGE life savers. Today is my 8th day on liquids and my only clear liquids day...today I am a bit hungry, but my sugar free cider helps because it is hot and has strong flavor.

Ugh need to vent about a Husband that doesn't understand!

Butterfly, Do you think he is maybe concerned about how you will feel about him once you are all thinned down and healthy? He wouldn't be the first husband to feel threatened in that way! Just a thought...

    Counting Protein, Carbs?

I agree with the others. I am working with a Bariatric Program of Excellence and we are told to never have less than 60 grams of protein per day as that will allow for lean muscle loss. Bariatric patients, and others who want to lose weight, are recommend to have 80 or so per day broken up into at least three different meals as the body cannot really absorb more than 30 grams at a time. I would suggest upping your protein to help you lose weight. Good luck!
  24. I am scheduled for surgery on April 21st and have three weeks off to recover and get accustomed to "eating" before I go back to work to finish out the school year. I am wondering how people, especially teachers, handle food and drink during the work day. Thank you for anything you can share that might help me out.

    Liquid Diet

TLW, I teach a third/fourth grade blended classroom on the third floor of a 105 year old building. I was very concerned about this too as I didn't want to let my kiddos down anymore than me being gone for three weeks is going to do. I am on day six of my liquid diet. I honestly don't feel as though my energy has waned at all and it has been easier than I had expected. On the plus side, I am already down over six pounds! My last day at school is Monday and it is my clear liquids day. I am a bit worried about being hungry and grumpy and I don't want to do that to them!
