mae7365 got a reaction from StratusPhr in Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd
I had sleeve the RNY revision October 2020 due to severe GERD, Gastritis and Esophagitis. Insurance covered it after I completed the diagnostic test: barium swallow test, esophagus motility test and endoscopy with BRAVO. After submitting the results (all the testing was done in a couple weeks), I received approval from Aetna within 2 weeks. Even though I had gained back some of the weight lost from the sleeve, I was overweight but not obese, so my weight had no bearing on insurance approval. My 1st surgeon visit was in mid August and my surgery was October 29th.

  2. Congrats!
mae7365 got a reaction from wendy100 in Sleeve 2011 and just had the Roux en y bypass questions
    Best thing.....NO MORE ACID REFLUX
    Worst thing.....Dumping
    Surgery 10/29/2020 @ 187 lbs.
Weight loss since surgery..... 52 lbs. That's also a BEST THING!
Since my surgery was for the stomach/esophagus issues, the weight loss has been a bonus!
After the sleeve, I had a banana sized stomach. Now I have a golf ball sized stomach. The remainder of my stomach and my duodenum (upper most part of my upper intestine) is still inside, the duodenum is just connected further down into my ilium (lowest part of the upper intestine). So in the revision, nothing is taken out like with the sleeve. The digestive track is just rerouted to bypass the stomach and duodenum.
    I hope that makes sense.

My daughter came home today and she told me I should try on some of her dresses from her college formal days. Never, ever, ever did I expect them to fit. I feel pretty good after I looked at these photos. Of course, I've got the whole "bat wings" going on, but I'm not going to stress over the details. Just wanted to share my joy of the moment!

I have started making sugar free Jell-O pudding with Premier Protein shakes. I love the pistachio pudding with vanilla shakes and the cheesecake pudding with strawberry shake.
25 calories for the pudding mix and 40 calories for the shake (I use an 11 oz. shake with cold Water to get the 2 cups needed for the pudding mix). I put them into separate serving cups with lids, stack them in the frig and grab one when I need a snack/treat.

I won’t say this is before and after because I’m almost 6 months post op and still going. So before and during.

How moly, it’s almost hard to look at! I still have so much work to do but I cannot get over the changes in under 6 months! At times I really miss a cold beer (and I am not really a drinker) or a good old dish of homemade Mac and cheese but then I look at old photos and it quickly reminds me that I don’t need them that badly! What do you miss or what gives you that added incentive to shut the fridge door?

mae7365 got a reaction from Coexister in Revision from sleeve to bypass 8 days post op
I also had the revision for GERD, Gastritis and Esophagitis and I'm very happy that all that has been resolved. But I'm also very happy with the weight loss. As you can see below, I gained almost all my initial weight that I had lost after the sleeve. I felt like a complete failure and a fool for having thrown away my chance at a normal weight. I know this revision is my second chance to do it right and learn from my mistakes.
Here are my stats over my 6 year journey.
    Highest weight May 2012 - 222 lbs.
Gastric sleeve surgery weight November 2014 - 212 lbs.
Lowest weight post sleeve May 2015 - 151 post op 6 months (61 lbs. lost)
Highest weight prior to revision surgery January 2019 - 205 lbs. (54 lbs. gained)
Weight day of revision surgery October 2020 - 185 lbs.
Current weight March 2021 (5 months post op) - 138 lbs. (47 lbs. lost)
I hope that I never have to add a line that says I've gained weight back again!!!!
    Good luck on your journey!!!!

mae7365 got a reaction from Coexister in VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG
    @Paradigm Star
I didn't feel much restriction immediately following RNY either. At least not like I did after VSG. But as time has gone by, it's not really restriction that I feel as much as just feeling full. And yes, I do feel hungry at time. I had a ZOOM meeting with my support group yesterday and the dietician even commented that revision surgery patients don't always feel like the "virgin" RNY patients - maybe because we've "been there, done that", we know what is going on and what to expect and there isn't that huge jump from a normal stomach to 1/4 stomach like we had with the VSG. So we went from 1/4 stomach to 1/8.....not as drastic of a change.
But I know I feel great and have a ton of energy at almost 5 months post op. I feel like I'm fully healed inside.
I'm glad you had the surgery. It should help, or eliminate, the gastric issues you were dealing with.......and you'll get to lose some weight in the process!!!

mae7365 got a reaction from Tracyringo in VSG to RYGB - after 5 years with VSG
I converted from VSG to RYGB in October 2020. Recovery was similar, yet different. I had a lot of vomiting following VSG, but less with the bypass. I am one of the 30% who experience dumping, but as catwoman7 explained, it is totally controllable by watching what I eat. In fact, I'm almost 5 months post-op and even the dumping appears to have improved (or I've figured out the triggers!).
I can tell you that I don't get that immediate sense of restriction like I did with the sleeve. At this point in my recovery, my body seems to know when to stop eating before I get the pain and discomfort associated with overeating.
All I can really offer is my advise based upon my outcome. I am so happy that I had the surgery. Like you, I has the surgery to correct my stomach and esophagus issues. But I've lost 47 pounds, I feel great, I can sleep through the night without acid reflux and I look and feel 10 years younger. Don't let fear of surgery and complications limit your decision to improve your health and daily living.

mae7365 got a reaction from mamaofsix in Revision due to GERD
I couldn't get the revision surgery fast enough! I had reflux since 2010, and had the sleeve done in 2014. Never knew that sleeve surgery can actually make GERD worse. After exhausting every medical option, sleeping in a recliner and constantly coughing from the acid erosion of my throat, I went back to my original surgeon who gave me the LINX or bypass options. I didn't go with LINX because it's only been around for 10 years and bypass (gastrojejunostomy for insurance purposes) is considered the "gold standard" for chronic GERD.
After GERD was confirmed by testing (including BRAVO), I had the bypass on 10/29/20. Have not had any reflux since surgery. I struggled through the first 3-4 weeks post op, and I am a "dumper", but I feel great. I've lost 41 pounds since surgery, I'm now in the normal BMI range, dropped from a size 16 to size 10 and have more energy than I did before surgery. I think some of the energy is also because I can finally sleep at night like a normal person: no waking up with a hand/mouth full of stomach acid!
I did lots of internet research, including articles in medical journals, and the gastrojejunostomy made the most sense for me. And the weight loss is definitely a bonus!

mae7365 got a reaction from Tracyringo in Revision and the honeymoon phase ?
I'm only 6 months post revision, so I'm not really sure if there is a honeymoon period like I heard about with the sleeve. I too have gotten below my goal and significantly lower than I ever got after VSG surgery. But I was overweight, not obese, at the time of my revision since the surgery was done for medical reasons, not for weight loss.
I really don't know why I've lost so much weight, since I feel like my insides have been healed for months. I try very hard to eat healthy and I walk 5-6 miles a day. But I would be less than honest if I said I never ate sweets, snack foods etc. I haven't been actively losing weight for the past month (only lost 1.2 lbs. in the last 30 days). I think I'm actually in maintenance, which would be great if I can just keep doing what I'm doing and maintain! If it's a honeymoon, I hope it keeps going.
