Scared to Death for Post Op

My mom and I had the surgery a week apart, and everything has been different for us. I had mine 11/17/14 and she had hers 11/24/14. Where she has done great in some parts I have failed, and where I have done great she has struggled. For example, my first day of soft foods I was so excited to eat eggs because I had missed them, but the first bite I took got stuck. I didn't throw up, but I had to go back to liquids for a few days because of the pain that was caused by the eggs. They moved on down eventually, but they had made my esophagus inflamed, and that was a terrible week for me. I waited until the third week like I was supposed to to start the soft foods and it turned out terrible for me. My mom called to ask about my problem, and they told her she could start soft foods a week early and she had absolutely no problem. I'm 6 weeks out now, and I still have trouble eating the eggs, but I'm doing fine with everything else. My mom has experienced the throwing up, though. The night that we ate fish together, she came home and threw everything back up. There was nothing wrong with the food because I ate more of it than she did, and I had no problem with it at all. Also, I stopped taking pain medicine after my second day home because the pain wasn't really all that bad, but my mom took it regularly for at least a week or two because the pain in her stomach was much worse than mine. I think the moral of my story is that everyone is different. Your post-op experience depends on you and how your body reacts to what you're about to put it through. I'm pretty sure everyone can tell you the first couple of weeks suck, but even at only 6 weeks out, I know that it was worth it and I am so glad I had it done. I wish you the best of luck!
  2. I'm 2 weeks post-op from my VSG, and I was doing AWESOME. Until Monday. I just woke up feeling yucky. I was nauseous, and I was supposed to be started soft foods, so I made myself some eggs and cheese for Breakfast. I could not get them down. It was like they just stuck in my esophagus and wouldn't go anywhere. I thought this was just because they were new or maybe too dry, so I tried a Protein drink for lunch and got a few sips in before it started not wanting to go down either. This worried me, obviously. It would probably be useful to mention that I haven't been able to burp when I needed to since surgery. This was a problem the first week, but once most of the gas was gone, I barely noticed. Since Monday I've barely been able to get anything down. I realized yesterday, though, that I don't think I have used the bathroom (#2) since either Friday or Saturday. Obviously not a good thing. So I took some stool softeners last night, and I've gone a little bit but I still can't really get anything down. I was wondering if anyone else had similar feelings with their constipation (because I know that it is very common) or if the pain that I'm feeling might actually be coming from something else? Just to summarize: Since Monday, anything I try to eat feels like it gets stuck in my esophagus, and it hurts. I'm hoping this is due to the constipation.
  3. I have actually not taken any pain meds whatsoever since about 2 days after getting home. I haven't had bad pain at all. The word blockage scares me. I just took the stool softener last night, so I'm going to see how I do today, and the plan is to call the surgeon tomorrow if it hasn't gotten any better. Thank you for the replies!
  4. I'm probably a little too early to give you a solid answer, but I don't really get hungry. I'm 2 weeks post-op, so thats probably more normal. I get these little bursts of hunger that I think are more like rumbles in my stomach than anything, but they go away quickly so I'm pretty happy with the outcome.
  5. I had my surgery on Monday the 17th. Yesterday was absolutely terrible with the gas pains and everything, but I'm doing much better now. No leaks, and I was able to come home early this morning. I do have some questions though about the first couple of weeks. I'm supposed to get in 60 grams of protein plus 64 oz of water in, but I'm truly struggling to get this down. It took me several hours to drink 8 oz of milk with protein powder, and I felt so extremely full that I can't imagine drinking anything else for a while. How did you guys get in all of your requirements the first week?? Every sip of anything I take makes my stomach gurgle in a very uncomfortable way. Was that the case with you guys too?? Is this something that gets better after the first couple of weeks? I'm sure this will all pass, I just have been warned and warned to make sure to get in my fluids, but it's a lot more difficult than I could have imagined. Any good or bad stories of your first weeks would be great so that I can kind of have an idea of what I'm looking at. I know that the hardest part has passed, and I am so very excited about what's going to be happening in the next few months. Thank you for letting me share with you guys!
