Long term risks with 80% of Stomach Removed?
The human body is incredibly adaptive. We can live with 1 kidney, with no spleen, lost of limbs etc....I had a radical hysterectomy and had all my reproductive organs removed right down to the lymph nodes. As mentioned gastrectomies have been done for a very long time and people are able to go on and lead normal lives.

How do we convince MFP we're not anorexic?
I close my diary and ignore the message. MFP is not designed for bariatric diets. I like using it to track my food and just pretend I don't see that message. It's just not a big deal.

Second at of preop diet...having big second thoughts about the whole thing!
Yes you will eat normally again. You just own't overeat which is what so many of us did pre-op. I do not feel like I am on a diet. I eat pretty much everything I ate before surgery, just in smaller portions.

I'm done telling folks. They don't get it
I don't make grand announcements about my life in general. This was no different. I'm not making up explanations because I don't owe anyone any explanations about my life. EVER. Everyone is on a need to know. There are some people who get the information and some don't. When I had my menicus repair done I didn't feel a need to post on FB or tell everyone. Why? Because it was a needed surgery for my health. My WLS is exactly the same. I'm not hiding, I'm just feel no need to broadcast.

This surgery feels like a big mistake.
@@Chele Martines - sounds like you are eating too fast and getting either a case of stacking (that stuck feeling in the esophagus) or the foamies (too much saliva/phelgm). We have to eat super duper slow and chew really well. Especially early on. When you don't the food doesn't digest and "stacks" in your esophagus or it goes down too fast and displaces the saliva in your belly. Some have found success using the Eat Slower app. You can try taking one tiny bite, chewing until it dissolves, eating 2 minutes the repeat. Also remember to keep at least a 30 minute window on your eating and drinking. Also try playing around with the time of day you take your prilosec. I tended to get acid in the evenings so taking my omeprzole around 2 -3 pm made a difference for me.

Comfort Items
Nothing. I carried very little and used everything I brought. I bought extra large undies to wear home. My iPad/iPhone and charger, a toothbrush and toothpaste. I didn't need a pillow. I only live 45 mins away from the hospital and I wasn't that much pain upon discharge. I found my hospital very accommodating.

I'm done telling folks. They don't get it
@@Jana77 - Even easier just stop talking about it. There really is no need to continue to have confrontation when both sides are firmly decided. Simple say, "Thank you for your concern, but I no longer wish to have this discussion." Then stop. Stop before feelings are hurt and stop before you feel frustrated. if you need to walk away. Not every battle will be won.

Best Non-Dairy Protein Supplement
I'm never crazy about the word "Best" since it's such a subjective term. It's really just a matter of finding what works for you and for each of that it would be different. There are several vegan Protein powders and shakes out there you can try. Bob'd Red Mill makes a soy isolate powder if you prefer to add your own flavoring. I also made a few other suggestions on this post. My recommendation is to google "Non dairy protein supplements" and start reading labels and reviews. Get as many samples as you can and taste them for yourself.

Protein powder/bars safe for nut/soy/whey allergy?
@ - You could try Orgain Organics. I did find it a little gritty but not as much when I blended it in a nutra bullet. I'm not sure how it mixes with Water. I always used almond milk, yogurt or juice. I actually thought it blended best with orange juice or pineapple juice and lots of ice. I've also use Biochem Vegan which states it can be mixed with water. I've used this one as well but never mixed it with water. You can buy this at Whole Foods which is where I used to get mine. Whole Foods also carries Hemp Protein. I tried a sample of this when I was pre-op. I didn't hate it, just didn't love it. I find most plant based Proteins have a little bit of grit. While they can be mixed in a shaker bottle, I think blending them in a nutra bullet or similar blender helps eliminate most of that grittiness.

Cheated need HELP!
I think you need to self examine why you would sabotage yourself with not one but two drinks, not to mention bugles. Be honest with yourself. Remember this will not work if you are continually not following the program. An occasional treat is one thing, just be careful of the tendency to fall off the wagon this early in the process. Secondly eating slower is to 2 fold. It allow your brain and tummy time to communicate that you are full and thus prevents over eating. If you food gets cold, you could try serving smaller portions and if you are still hungry then getting seconds.

No Energy 3 weeks post sleeve surgery
It's perfectly normal to feel tired this soon after surgery. Make sure you are taking your vitamins/supplements and work on getting in all your fluids. You're body will eventually regulate itself. Until then listen to your body and nap when you can.

Trip to England
@@Inner Surfer Girl - FYI - the board is lagging today so if it appears your post don't go through, refresh before hitting send again. That way you don't double post. To the OP. You can bring a shaker bottle and Protein powder in a sip lock. I'm 4 months and I only have one a day and sometimes not even that. If you think you can survive without powders then just make every effort to eat nutritious high protein foods. I've been to England but only London which is just like any major city complete with a Whole Foods supermarket. I did find a health food store in Devon that might carry Protein Powder but I'm not certain. Since you aren't leaving until summer, you can try calling or writing them. Liquids
I switched to Isopure unflavored. I disliked the sickly sweet taste of most Protein drinks and I can't do the ones with artificial flavoring and colorings. I add the Isopure to my coffee, in my yogurt and even in my soups/broth. It doesn't effect the flavor and I get the added protein. Why are you not getting in all your Water? If water is too difficult to drink straight, try doing a 50/50 apple or white grape juice and water blend. I prefer using FAGE 0% greek yogurt instead of sour cream because it has more protein. I also eat spinach/dark green veg, Beans, nuts, hummus, ricotta, eggs and cheese to add to my protein intake. I'll share my handy protein source chart. meat is not the only source of protein.

Homeopathy/Naturopathy to help with recovery?
What exactly do you plan to use them for? I personally have no issues with homeopathy. My favorite nutritionist was a homeopath as well. Perhaps I am in the minority because I had no issues recovering post op. My doctor already had me on a regimen of Vitamins and supplements and I honestly didn't feel a need for additional ones. If you want less "cluttered" so to speak Protein supplements you can get both whey isolates or soy isolates in powder form to use instead. I am a vegetarian and I use Isopure naked whey. I can add that to my morning tea or coffee, greek yogurt, or vegetable broth/soup. I'm not familiar with most of the supplements you have listed. (Arnica, Belle Perenis, Calendula, Gota Kola extract, and Staphisagria). What are they for? I get the rest of my vitamins from my multi-Vitamin. So far my bloodwork has been perfectly fine. I notice you are in PA. I'm in Philly. Where are you and where are you having your surgery done?

Post diet advice
There is no across the boards consensus on this. Every doctor has a different protocol. Some have pre-op diets, some don't. Some do clear liquids then full liquids, some go straight to full liquids. The rest of the process tends to be liquids - purees - soft foods - all foods. However the amount of time in each stage can vary from 1 week to a full month. You need to speak with your doctor or nutritionist and gets specifics from them.

What's after your EGD?
@@Sharon1964 - It varies depending on insurance and/or program requirements. I didn't have to have a EGD. I had an upper GI test instead. Sadly your deductible for the test was just that, for the test. It does not guarantee that you will be approved. You should have received a list of pre-op testing that would be required for surgery. If you have not, you should request it from whomever is coordinating your insurance request and/or call your insurance company and ask. I had to have 3 appointments with my bariatric team, attend 1 support group meeting, psych eval, a nutrition class, chest xray, upper GI, Pulmonary function test, a sleep study and bloodwork. Additionally my doctor opted to have an IVC filter put in as a precaution against bloodclots. This required an ultra sound of my legs and an appointment with the vascular surgeon.

Having a hard time on pre-op diet.. will I fail with sleeve?
It may. This is as much a mental issue as it is a physical one. If your food addiction is so great that you cannot follow your nutritionist instructions, perhaps counseling is needed. This is not a magic cure all. You have to eat right and follow a healthy eating plan. The pre-op diet in addition to preparing your body for surgery is also to help you prepare mentally.
