    Hunger after surgery?

Ginger, loved your reply! I too am the family cook and I am/was an excellent one! That's how I got this way! Now I am having trouble because my taste has changed so very much. I cook for my extended family every Sunday and I love to do that and they of course have loved that as well. In fact, when I started the liquid diet, I stopped cooking until about 4 weeks ago and I am 10 weeks post op. The issue with cooking is, my taste has changed dramatically and what tastes seasoned to me, apparently tastes bland to my family. Also I cannot taste everything or by the time I can eat, I am already full. I can only eat a few spoonfuls and I am done. Also, I won't even attempt to taste anything sweet, I use a recipe for most dessert items and no one in my family indulges besides my little granddaughter so I try not to even make that stuff. I did make pumpkin pie on thanksgiving. Anyway, I guess the good news is my family is very supportive and if any of them give me a hard time I jokingly tell them where the closest McDonald's is. It shuts them right up! I wonder if our tastes ever change back or if this is simply the way we will be because of what we now eat? Does anyone know?
  2. I remember the pain when I took a breath, in fact I complained about that most. I thought this was normal given the gas in my belly. I think it will pass but if u are worried you should call your doctors office.

    10 week post op stall

I just went through one at 9 weeks. I had just begun a more aggressive cardio workout and suddenly found myself not losing for several weeks. I am very strict about my diet. After reaching out to my fabulous partners here on Bariatric Pal, they told me that my body was actually in starvation mode as I was not getting enough calories. I was only eating about 500 per day and working out 1 hour per day. I worked to add another 150 calories to my diet and honestly a little additional fat and my stall broke. I lost 2 lbs in a matter of 3 days and have been going strong since. I also got myself a Fitbit so that I have a better understanding of my actual activity burn along with exercise. I found I was actually burning most of what I was taking in. I track my diet and exercise on fitness pal and the Fitbit communicates with that tool. Now of course I hurt my rotator cuff exercising (I have psoriatic arthritis) and am down for the count. Hoping it down set me back too far. Good luck on your stall. I know it is really frustrating!

LOL, don't you love that auto correct! Get well soon!
  5. Gas x worked great for me as well. Also heating pads and lots of walking.

    Someone please help me!

Premier protein from Costco or SAMs has my vote. Chocolate specifically, I have spent a small fortune on powders only to find out that I don't like any of them, the premier protein chocolate is like drinking rich chocolate milk. The vanilla however was to sweet for me, ever since my surgery I cannot tolerate anything that tastes too sweet. Good luck!

I found when I got home from the hospital it was another couple days before all those gas pains went away. Keep walking a lot! I got home on a Wednesday and by Friday I was all done taking pain medication. I did however keep using Gasx for a few more days. Also a heating pad on your belly really helps with the gas pains as well. Good luck and take care of yourself!
  8. Asher325, I thought it was going to be really hard too and it turned out it was. It as bad as I thought it would be. For me broth, good broth was my saving grace. The protein drinks can be so sweet.
  9. Actually the withdrawal from lyrics is probably making things worse for you. Was this recommended at this time? When I went through prep diet I was not allowed any actual food, just those lousy shakes, broth, sugar free jello and Popsicles. The one thing that really satisfied me was a suggestion from my surgeons office, the suggested that I buy some mrs. Grass chicken noodle soup and strain the noodles out. It was great because I could not take all that sweet from the shakes.

    Hunger after surgery?

Well, here's the good news. I have psoriatic arthritis and have joint pain all the time. Also have had 5 back surgeries and now have a neurostimulator implanted in my spine to help when I have nerve pain down my leg. I have been off all pain meds for over two years because I think narcotics actually cause me more pain that is not real. The great news is, since my surgery and weight loss, my knees and ankles do not hurt any more. My low back is well enough that it allows me to exercise. I have more energy than I have had since 1990 when all my joint and back problems started. When I do my cardio, I worked up to that hour a day and I am only at a level 2 right now but it is more than I have done in years and it makes me feel fantastic after I have accomplished it. Getting going of course sucks everyday. But I know that it is good for me and I am trying to build healthy habits. I wish you all the best! I hope that you are able to get some weight off your joints soon, it will really help you!
  11. I am almost 10 weeks post op now. Most times I can only get about 1/4 cup down and I am very full however if it is really mushy stuff like yogurt or oatmeal I can usually eat a few bites more before I hit the wall. I have had a hard time getting more than 550 - 600 calories a day including protein shakes and I usually do two of those for 320 total. I have lost 60lbs in 10 weeks. I never ever have thrown up or have dumping syndrome.

    Pizza

I would think you would be ok with a small piece as long as you are not a dumper. If you suffer from dumping you might have a problem with the crust.
  13. I am glad you are starting to feel a little better. Everyday life should get a little better from here on out and before you know it you will be trying new foods and recipes. I have been back on "regular" foods for the last week. That means I can pretty much introduce foods back into my diet being very careful and of course following all the rules. I love the fact that because I followed the rules from day one my body actually craves high protein low carb foods. Tonight I made Asian chicken lettuce wraps of course using a light recipe. I could only eat half of one but it was awesome! Hang in there, you are going to do just great and will start seeing results very quickly if not already!
  14. I have not tried beef jerky but I love it. I am going to have to pick some up.
  15. This is actually very helpful! I am still working through some of the foods that my pouch will or won't get along with. I end up eating a lot of chicken! Apparently chicken and fish go down the best for me but I am getting tired of them. I was planning on trying shrimp again this week so I may have to cook some up, I loved shrimp previously but they were a little hard to chew up small enough a few weeks ago. Now I think they would be fine. Other things, I have been cooking and keeping on hand: Baked chicken wings with hot sauce - I pull the skin off and eat the meat only Fresh mozzarella and tomato salad with balsamic and olive oil Chicken souvlaki - I grill up the skewers of chicken marinated in lemon juice, olive oil, crushed garlic, fresh oregano and a little salt. YUM. I use my indoor grill and make sure you don't over cook them.

    Hunger after surgery?

I am almost 10 weeks post op and I still don't really know what hungry feels like. I eat because I know my body requires it so I have to watch the clock. Also, I after losing my first 58lbs I stalled for about 2 weeks and it was because I was not eating enough so it almost becomes difficuklt to make sure I am getting enough. I am doing cardio for an hour a day which makes it worse if u don't take in enough calories. Up until a few days ago I was maybe getting in 450 a 500 calories and 70 grams of Protein daily. Now I am up to about 600 calories and 80 grams of protein and I seem to have broken my stall. It is kind of crazy to think your body doesn't really know what hungry feels like. Sometimes I think I am and I take two bites and I feel very full and then i am done. Just understand that everyone reacts a bit different but so far as I can tell most people don't struggle with real hunger after surgery. They let head hunger get the best of them.

Walking, heat packs, ice chips and go very very slowly. I promise you, the gas pains are the worst and they will get better.also don't be afraid to ask for gas pain medication in the hospital. The worse thing about this surgery is the gas they pump into your belly but it goes away after a few days. The gas x medicine helped me immensely. The other thing that helped was getting out of my bed in the hospital and sitting in the recliner all day when I wasn't walking. For me, the bed was not my friend, it made that gas pain worse. Good luck and hang in there. It will get better everyday!
  18. I have yet to actually get sick however every time I try to eat eggs I come very very close. I am not sure if it is a smell thing or a texture thing or what. I used to love eggs and now I cannot eat them. Every couple of weeks I try again. I have tried scrambled, poached, fried, hard boiled. I have tried mix ins. Nothing seems to help. The good news in I have not thrown up but I get very uncomfortable and right on the verge every time. Ugh.....wish I could get my eggs back!

    Day 4, home

I promise it will get better! I had a similar experience and used a heating pad, gas x and walked a lot. After the 1st week most of the gas pain finally disappeared. Good luck!

    Post Op Calorie Count

I am really going to try hard to get more calories in me. Protein is definitely not the issue but I am certain I am not eating enough. Let's see what happens after trying that. I am using fitness pal to track everything so I know that is what is wrong. I just have not felt hungry and I need to remember that my body still needs nourishment. Thanks for all the great advice!

    Tailbone problems anyone?

I thought I was loosing my marbles. My butt hurts whenever I sit, of course it has begun to get really flat so I assumed I was losing my padding. I am constantly shifting in my seat.
  24. I am 9.5 weeks out and have never dumped. I think I might be one of the lucky ones.

I use my fitness pal everyday and love it. I am really excited because i finally went out ant bought the Fitbit charge since I am working so hard on my exercise. I connected them together last night and just finished my first workout. I am excited to see how things go. It is only 9:30am and already I am at 5630 steps! What a way to start my day! I used to sit my behind on the couch all day and watch tv and mindlessly snack on garbage. Now look at me! Woot Woot!
