    Soft food phase

I was super prepared and I think that's why I've done as well as I have. I tried several different Protein shakes, powders, etc. I even went to 3 monthly support group meetings prior to my surgery to obtain as much info from people who'd already had the surgery. Here's my favorite recipe. I'm in the soft food stage until day 60! To me this is a complete meal and it has never given me any problems. I tried scrambled eggs and could not get them down. While it may take a little time to prepare, once you have it will supply you with 12 meals! It is such a great go to for me. You can swap out the ham for chicken, any ground meat, etc. The nutrition facts barely change. Best of luck and I know you will be successful Magic Crust Quiche - Ham Ingredients 2 cups 1% Lowfat Milk 1/2 cup All-purpose flour 5 large Eggland’s Best eggs 3 slices Sargento 2% Reduced Fat Pepper Jack cheese slices (cut or torn into small pieces) 3 slices Sargento 2% Reduced Fat Swiss Cheese slices (cut or torn into small pieces) 1/2 cup Sargento Sharp Cheddar 2% Reduced Fat Cheese shreds 7 oz Deitz & Watson uncured Applewood smoked ham diced small 1/4 cup Cooked red bell pepper diced small 1/4 cup Cooked Vidalia or sweet onion diced small Preheat oven to 350˚. In a blender or NutriBullet, mix eggs, milk and flour until blended, season with salt, pepper or whatever you’d like. Pour into a bowl and add all cheeses, cooked veggies and cooked meat. Stir to combine and then pour into an 8”x8” or 9”x9” square glass dish. Bake for 60 minutes. Let stand 5-10 before serving. You can add whatever cheeses, veggies or meats suit your taste. The small amount of flour firms up the sides and bottom making the “magic crust” while saving tons of calories. The Nutrition Facts are based on recipe above. FYI - the heavier meats, ie. ground beef tend to fall to the bottom. Serving size is approximately 2”x2 1/2” Nutrition Facts Servings 12 Per serving: Calories 121 Protein 12g Fat 6 g Cholesterol 94 mg Sodium 239 mg Potassium 123 mg Total Carbohydrate 7 g Sugars 2 g

    April bypass buddies.

    PB2 + Protein Shake = DELISH!

@@KalelsWifey Have you tried Premier Protein shakes? They're pre-made and taste delicious. I don't care for any of the powders, even when I use my NutriBullet to mix them. You get 30 grams of protein in just 11 ounces! I've used them from day 1 to achieve my 63-66 grams of daily protein. I'm eating 3 meals and 2 Snacks which average 12-15 grams of protein each. So far so good. I have my first post-op visits this coming Tuesday. Excited to see my nutritionist as we've become friends. Your shake sounds good. I love PB2

    Hunger pangs

@@Trucent I'm 4 weeks post-op and no hunger pangs. I did Optifast 2 weeks prior. Here's how I made it fun and tasty. I used mostly the ready made Optifast drinks and I'd add ice and flavored liquid Stevia to change things up. Using my NutriBullet made all the difference in the world! Root beer Stevia and ice to vanilla for a root beer float. Valencia orange to vanilla for a dreamsicle. Warm Tazo chai tea with cinnamon Stevia to vanilla for a delicious warm treat. One of my favorites was adding the chocolate to a cup of coffee with a lil chocolate Stevia for a decadent hot chocolate. I almost forgot, the pumpkin spice and the vanilla shake with ice in the NutriBullet tasted like a Starbucks Frappuccino - Yum! Two weeks is a long time to just drink but I loved it and my nutritionist couldn't believe how creative I got Best of luck on your surgery. It's the BEST thing I've ever done!!!
  5. I gave up diet soda, fried foods, potato chips, caffeine, chewing gum and drinking out of straws. It wasn't easy but boy has it made life after RNY so much easier. I don't miss any of it. OK that was a lie ... I miss my chewing gum - LOL!

    Eating

This is one of my favorite recipes. I've shared it on here a couple of times and others have tried and liked it. I've made it with chicken, ground beef and ham. Ham is by far my favorite because it's the easiest to chew to a liquid consistency. I much prefer this to scrambled eggs. Great thing is it makes 12 servings and it freezes well. Some days I'll eat it for all 3 meals because it tastes so good Magic Crust Quiche Ingredients 2 cups 1% Lowfat Milk 1/2 cup All-purpose flour 5 large Eggland’s Best eggs 3 slices Sargento 2% Reduced Fat Pepper Jack cheese slices (cut or torn into small pieces) 3 slices Sargento 2% Reduced Fat Swiss Cheese slices (cut or torn into small pieces) 1/2 cup Sargento Sharp Cheddar 2% Reduced Fat Cheese shreds 7 oz Deitz & Watson uncured Applewood smoked ham diced small 1/4 cup Cooked red bell pepper diced small 1/4 cup Cooked Vidalia or sweet onion diced small Preheat oven to 350˚. Ladies over 50 - bypass

@@recordsmom So glad you tried and liked the quiche I made it with Deitz & Watson uncured applewood smoked ham last Saturday and it's my favorite by far. The ham is juicy and much easier to chew to a liquid consistency. The chicken seems to be a bit too dry. Sorry to hear about your arthritis pain. I had a stroke the day before Thanksgiving 2013 and was left with a debilitating nerve condition on my right side. Pain meds don't work but I take membrane suppressants Lyrica and Gabapentin 3 times per day and will for the rest of my life. Let me just say, they taste disgusting in my applesauce but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! Have you ever tried Enbrel? Hope your pain subsides soon.

    Multivitamins

I was told I could take Flintstones Complete + Iron. I bought a bottle of 200 from Sam's Club and didn't like them at all. On the unjury website, I clicked on the Opurity Vitamins tab and found their Multivitamin made specifically for bypass and sleeved patients. I just put one in my pill spliter and chew 1/2 twice a day. They are much softer than the Flintstones and taste more like a sweet tart to me. I love them!

    Any swimmers out there?

I can't wait to get in my pool. I live in Florida and it has been absolutely gorgeous ever since my April 21st surgery. I go back for my first post-op visit with my team Tuesday, May 26th. I'm sorry but we're having a party and I'm getting in the pool on Memorial Day! I promise to just chill and not do anything crazy. My incisions are already completely healed so I don't think this will be a problem.

    Personal question.

I was 7 days post op and it was awful, felt like concrete was coming out. Then another 5 days after that and so painful. I was given a prescription for liquid colace (stool softner) but it's sold over the counter in pill form only as far as I could find. Therefore, I didn't purchase any. I talked with the pharmacist and bought Purelax, CVS's version of Miralax which is much cheaper. You can out the powder in your Water or any beverage. It is completely tasteless and let me tell you it works wonderfully. I took it every day for 7 and now every other day. I'm regular every day now, simple and easy. No more pain and no more concrete for me! We have to remember that eating or drinking a high Protein diet, which we'll be doing for the rest of our lives, is a sure fire way to become constipated. I hope this helps.
  11. @ Here's what I use and it tastes like the old fashion orange creamsicles. I love it! You can buy it at Walmart for $6.97 and it lasts 16 days taking 500mg twice a day (1/2 cap full).

    Seems surreal

I too went through my closet just last weekend. I have everything from size L to 3XL. I took all my 3XL's and gave them to my cousin. She was super excited. I'm wearing my 2XL's now but they're even loose. I went through my underwear drawer yesterday and tossed my size 9 panties and pulled out the 8's. You see I lost down to 167 in 2008 and got down to these smaller sizes. Glad I held on to most things. That memory was brought back when I pulled out the size 6 panties and couldn't believe how small they looked. How did I ever fit into those?! As I continue to shrink, I will just put my clothes up for sale in my eBay store. I've had a lot of success selling my old clothes on the site. I'll put all that cash away for new skinny clothes. How exciting will that be?! I wish you all continued success. We got this!!!

I'm pre op, with a post op question.

@wascott You'd be amazed at how the eye mask helped as well!
  15. beachgal2935

    Yum!

Here's what I prefer ... they're all natural flavored liquid Stevia! Zero everything. It only takes a few drops and the taste is amazing. I keep one in my purse and when I go to Starbucks so I can flavor my own coffee or Protein shake/coffee mixture. pumpkin Spice and English Toffee are my favorites.

    ????TMI Subject ????

I had the same issue and when I finally went the second week it was so painful. liquid Protein in your colon is like concrete! I take Purelax (CVS's brand of Miralax) every other day in my Water (it's tasteless) and I've been regular ever since!

    Help????

Did your surgeon prescribe anything to help your stomach? Mine prescribed Omeprazole and I'm to take it before breakfast for the first three months. I had my surgery at Mayo Hospital. Here's what's in my Mayo book: "Some people develop a blockage at the opening of the stomach despite efforts to follow the dietary guidelines carefully. Common symptoms of a blockage are persistent nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. If you are closely following the diet guidelines and these symptoms continue longer than 2 days, contact your health care provider." My advice to you would be to contact your doctor's office. You don't want to take any chances.

I'm pre op, with a post op question.

I only spent one night in the hospital. I brought ear plugs and my sleep mask so I slept pretty well. That is until the nurse's assistant came in to strip my drain at 4 am. My surgery was at 8 am and I went home at 6 pm the next day. Took a percocet before bed and fell into a deep sleep. Next day I felt sore and took a couple more pain pills but by my second day home I was pain pill free. My recovery has been remarkable. My incisions are barely noticeable as I was stitched from the inside and glued on the outside, no staples were used on me - Yay! This was the best decision I could have ever made. Best of luck to you.

    Ladies over 50 - bypass

@@nancynew Try the quiche - it's delicious! I had it with Deitz & Watson uncured applewood smoke ham today. It's got your eggs, moist meat, gooey cheeses and soft veggies. What more could you want - LOL! I bought 3 jars of baby food and when I opened one the smell grossed me out. I don't know how my son ever ate it. If I'm going to eat such a small amount of food, I want it to be the tastiest food it can be!!!

    Dreaded Stall, 3 wks out...

@@KalelsWifey Yay for you! The moister the Protein the better! When you said you had eaten sausage, I was like ... what?! We were told "Avoid processed meats"! No hot dogs, bologna, sausage, etc. The no drinking with meals was an adjustment for me as well. Now I realize that before when I was guzzling ice tea in between bites, I was just washing down my food so I could shovel more in. Kinda gross when you think about it. I also find it fascinating that my husband and son can finish their huge meals before I'm finished with my small portion. Their shoveling it in grosses me out now

    Dreaded Stall, 3 wks out...

@@KalelsWifey I hit a 6 day stall where I lost nothing! You and I had surgery the same week. I've lost a pound the last 2 days in a row, so don't stop eating your solids and go back to liquids. I was told many people do this to try and lost weight faster and it ends up hurting them. Our new stomachs need the eating progression plans we were given for a reason. If you only drink liquids the opening from your stomach to your intestine won't gradually enlarge like it's suppose to. One of the ladies in my support group at Mayo didn't follow this protocol and ended up back in surgery. They had to surgically enlarge the opening. She was not happy. We have to have patience. The weight will come off but our bodies will decide how quickly. You are doing an amazing job so just keep up the good work!!!

    April bypass buddies.

Sorry to hear some of you girls are having a difficult time with the eggs. I'm not much of a scrambled egg fan. I find them to be dry and tasteless. That's probably why I love eating my quiche because it's super moist. I'm still switching up the different meats and seasonings in my Magic Crust Quiche recipe to have a variety of flavors. I just find it a complete balanced meal that provides me with 12 grams of protein and I haven't had a single issue with swallowing the delicious 2" x 2 1/2" piece at each of my meals. It takes a lil awhile to prep and an hour to cook but once that's behind you, you're left with 12 servings. The best part is I can make meals for my hubby and son and my meal takes only 1 min 10 sec in the microwave and it's ready!!! I love reading what everyone's doctor or centers. Here are the guidelines I was given at Mayo for my days 15-60: Stage 3: Mechanically Altered Diet (day 15-60 after surgery) The Stage 3 diet includes small, distinct pieces of tender and easily chewed food that is low in fat and sugar. The meat must be ground or flaked and other foods must be chopped or diced into small pieces. Amount: 1/2 to 1/3 cup per meal Recommended foods: Soups: Broth, bouillon, low-fat cream soup Liquids: Water, non-calorie, non-carbonated, caffeine-free beverages Meats & Meat substitutes: Ground lean poultry; flaked fish; eggs; low-fat cottage cheese, low-fat cheese; casseroles made with ground meat and soft coked vegetables without hulls or tough skins Milk: Skim or 1% milk, sugar-free, low-fat yogurt without fruits, nuts or seeds Starches: Cooked, refined, dry cereal; potatoes (without skin) Vegetables: Soft cooked vegetables without hulls or tough skin; vegetable juice Fruits: Unsweetened, cooked or canned fruits, bananas, tender melon, ripe peaches or pears. All fruits without seeds or skins Other: Sugar-free gelatins or popsicles; sugar-free, low-fat frozen yogurt, custard and pudding (without nuts)

    Ladies over 50 - bypass

@@nancynew The quiche also freezes quite well. I made one yesterday with 93% lean ground beef & a little taco seasoning. It was absolutely delicious. I'm tolerating ground meats better at this point being only 3 weeks post-op. The chicken, though I try to chew it very thoroughly, always feels like it's sticking in my lower esophagus. Not a good feeling. I tried a little tender flaky fish at lunch this past Monday and it too felt like it was sticking. That's why I like this quiche
